(More customer reviews)This story follows a young American Indian woman who returns to the Reservation in eastern Utah to track a marauding band of shapeshifting Skinwalkers. The Skinwalker pack are terrorizing the Unita Basin area by abducting teenagers and using them for their twisted and evil purposes. I am by no means an expert on native American customs or beliefs, but from the context of the story a Skinwalker seems to be a human who has been seduced by some dark sorcery. They can transform in to animals. In the case of this story they are large wolf-like beings.
RandDee RedWillow writes in a crisp, spare style. She tells not just an adventure story, but also provides us with a sense of life on the reservation. We learn about some spiritual beliefs and customs along the way. This is a rich culture that most Americans know very little about.
This book will make an excellent gift for young readers. Although there are murders and a bit of gore it is not lurid or the dominante part of the story. I mean we can't have an evil pack of shapeshifters kill two local basketball stars and use their bones for some dark sorcery without going in to a bit of the gory detail, can we? It is never the focus of the story. What I took away was the strong bonds of community and how everyone worked together to put a stop to the rampage.
Mom's and Dads can also rest easy if their pre-teens and teens are reading this book for another reason. No cussing. There is no bad language from any of the characters apart from one guy who lets a "hell" slip. I would have no concern about letting elementary school age readers have a go at this story. Lovers of Harry Potter and such may find an American based companion in the paranormal adventure genre here.
This is book one in the series. I am looking forward to book two.
