If you've ever thought about a fisherman's life on the banks of a trout stream or knee-deep in the Bahamian surf, or just contemplated why the seasons change colors, you might want to hitch a ride with Jim Fergus.
The self-described "hook-and-bullet hack" -- in fact, one of the most thoughtful hunting and fishing writers in America, a field editor for Sports Afield magazine -- travels "The Sporting Road" like Kerouac with a fly rod and a 12-gauge, where every stream is a stream of consciousness. As you cruise the blue highways from Washington to Florida, Fergus muses about hunters' patient wives, sharptail grouse, bamboo fly-rods, the coming of snow, bonefishing, Native American culture, lives worth living, the perils facing small towns, good dogs and good friends. There's a certain poetry that emanates from somewhere deep down, an echo of a primitive time, brought up-to-date by Airstream trailers, Coleman grills and, for better or worse, Eddie Bauer.
This is a good book for non-hunters and non-anglers, the most militant of whom assume avid sportsmen have little conscience or intellect. Fergus proves otherwise. He is an eloquent spokesman for the sporting life, not defensive and clearly thoughtful. If you've ever wanted to understand the allure of frigid mornings in high-plains cornfields, or soggy nights on the banks of an unknown river, or why a hunter would drive for two days for a fleeting glimpse of a bird too small for dinner on its own, read "The Sporting Road."

A co-worker of mine strongly recommended "White Trash Etiquette" on a recent business trip, and was kind enough to let me borrow his copy. I read it cover-to-cover in my hotel room, and spent a good chunk of time chuckling at Dr. Verne's musings on life. This is a very, very funny book. It's quite original -- I've seen nothing like it. Dr. Verne shares his wisdom on all sorts of funny issues ranging from scams to sports to love. Dr. Verne's take on life is downright hilarious. This is a great book for a cover-to-cover read, or for someone who just has bits of time and wants to have a quick laugh. This book will definitely put a smile on your face.

Trailer Park Noir Review

Trailer Park Noir
Average Reviews:

I'll always read a new novel by Ray Garton as soon as it comes out and I eagerly await the next by this prolific but also very polished novelist. Trailer Park Noir is full of all the ingredients that make Garton such a pleasure to read--elegant but rich prose, great characterization, scenes so real you can feel the heat and smell the dust on the countertops, plenty of action and a knowledge of the dark side of humanity to compare with Thomas Harris. I found myself immediately involved in this novel, caring what happened to the heroine, rooting against the evil that tries to drown her, feeling like I was right there every step of the way. I tried to read it slowly, but with a Ray Garton novel, that's just impossible. If you're already a fan of Garton, I predict you'll put this novel with his best, and if you've never tried him, "Trailer Park Noir" is a great place to start!

Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Guide To Livin' Real Good Review

Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Guide To Livin' Real Good

I made the mistake of buying one book as a gift. I'd heard how good Ruby Ann's books are, and I have a pal that is a big Martha Stewart fan, so I ordered this book for her. When it arrived I started to wrap it up, but paused to glance at it. The pictures caught my eye and after just one page I was hooked. Not only didn't I wrap the book, I took it to my bedroom to keep for myself on the nightstand. I first tried to read it as fast as I could before our gift exchange, but with each page my feeling of personal possession grew stronger. I ended up having to buy a second copy to give to my pal, and additional copies to give to my other friends as well. The lesson here is that if you plan on giving "Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Guide to Livin' Real Good" as a gift, don't open it up, or just pick up two copies, one for the gift and one for you. I've already told all my friends to get me her other books this year. Now if they just come through. Ruby Ann Boxcar is 100% fall-out-of-the-bed-with-laughter funny regardless if you live in a trailer or not.

Bring Your Own Poison (A Trailer Park Mystery #4) Review

Bring Your Own Poison (A Trailer Park Mystery #4)
Average Reviews:

This series continues to get better and better as characters develop further and relationships grow. Wanda Nell Culpepper is a hardworking mother of three who occasionally happens upon a murder. In this case, it takes place at a party at the Kountry Kitchen, where she works. The author does a very credible job of having Wanda Nell get involved in trying to figure out the murderer but without doing anything stupid. What I found more interesting than the murder plot, though, was Wanda Nell's interactions with her family and her boyfriend, Jack. These are all extremely likable characters, who are three-dimensional and who care about each other a great deal. Even Wanda Nell's ex mother-in-law is thawing out towards her, and the older woman's conversations with her cousin are a riot. This is a light, but well-written series with sensitivity and heart. I highly recommend it.

Rich Johnson's Guide to Trailer Boat Sailing Review

Rich Johnson's Guide to Trailer Boat Sailing

As a young old salt, I've ridden the waves enough times to know a good guide when I see one. This book taught me a few things, even though I thought I knew everything. I also like the stories in the second half of the book. The tech parts are very enlightening and the adventures he and his family have bring back lots of memories. The breezy writing style made the tech parts easy to take, and the stories were both lessons learned and funny. The book is every bit as good as his wilderness guide, and I'll keep them both by my side.

If you've ever dreamed of casting off in search of adventure wherever your heart may lead, this book will help turn those dreams into reality. A trailerable sailboat is the ideal way to explore every part of the country - wherever there are lakes, rivers, reservoirs or ocean coastline. To make the most of this exciting lifestyle, owners (or prospective owners) of trailerable sailboats need three things: an understanding of the boat and how to use it, knowledge about the tow vehicle and trailer used to transport the boat, and a spirited sense of adventure to live the dream. This book delivers all three, in a down-to-earth style old salts will appreciate, yet easy enough for budding sailors to grasp.

Trailer Trashed: My Dubious Efforts Toward Upward Mobility

Hollis has wacky friends, a fascinating life, and wild and embarassing stories that she fortunately does not mind sharing. Her writing style and family stories remind me some of the Sedaris clan and a little of Terry Ryan, the woman who wrote The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio. I enjoy her musings about Grant/Lary/Daniel, faking her way through German translations, hell-fire cats, waiting for the neighborhood prostitute to claim her discarded go-go boots, or spilling the dirt on her sister who owns a bar in Nicaragua. Also, if you get the chance, go see Hollis speak in person - her quick wit will have you guffawing. I saw her with a standing room only crowd and she had 'em belly laughing. (full disclosure: I know and like Hollis. But she's funny, I'm telling you!).

Travel-Trailer Homesteading Under $5,000 Review

Travel-Trailer Homesteading Under $5,000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Any "Full-Timer", (Living full time in a Recreational Vehicle, like my wife and I do), could tell you that Mr. Kelling is right on track. His info is timely, accurate, and most importantly, useful! Since a "Full-Timer" already has a firm grip on the basics of a travel trailer, or motorhome, the author has correctly dispensed with all but the valuable stuff, ergo his title:
". . . HOMESTEADING. . ."
I've seen older travel trailers (30' or less) sell for $300 and last a lifetime. All of the prices noted in Mr. Kelling's book are correct, by my research. Certainly one could spend much more, but that lends itself to the old story of Richard Petty (the racecar driver) asking a famous racecar builder just how much it would cost to build a racecar. The reply was, "Depends on just how fast you want to go."
The idea here is frugality. If people can't do the work themselves, the "Do-it-yourself" book isn't the proper genre.
If, on the other hand, those of us who are self-sufficient pick up this little jewel -we're good to go! It's all here.
We folks living in the country know all about outhouses, septic systems, and cisterns. Suffice it to say that any engineer of Septic systems will endorse Mr. Kelling's plans. A leeching field is the correct place to return the liquefied matter back to mother earth. Lateral lines are what carry the liquefied matter to that leeching field. A separation tank, and liquefying tank are the correct instruments to reduce the matter to liquid.
Well, enough techno prattle.
It just irks my hide when a person pens a flame without doing their homework first. My wife and I have each staked a mining claim -20 acres each- in gorgeous country, beautiful mountains with dynamic and breathtaking views. Cost? Free!! (Well there was a meager filing fee, and we must make $100/yr improvements.) That takes care of the land, notwithstanding millions of acres of wilderness.
$30,000 worth of power & hand tools would make one a professional in the trades, so that's out of the question. A professional is not needed here, if you use Kelling's book. Park your travel trailer, get your pickaxe and shovel out and go to work. There's your excavation for the septic system for sweat equity. OK, so you have a few dollars, hire a backhoe.
Well, I could go on and on. This is such a marvelous book. Small? Well, maybe it isn't War and Peace sized, but there's an old country saying that goes, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight that counts, but the size of the fight in the dog."
This dog has plenty of fight in it and it will sure hunt.
Buy the book and go hunting!!

Midlife Murder: A Texas Trailer Park Mystery Review

Midlife Murder: A Texas Trailer Park Mystery

.
The characters sustain this wonderful romp. Five women create friendships which carry the day, beating a murder rap.
I was afraid this would be one of those low cost Kindle illiterates. Not at all. The interaction and support these women give each other creates a fascinating story.
The legal details are a little iffy, the cops are unbelievably heavy-hunted, several times the wrong word was used (council when she meant counsel, for example). But these are piddling complaints to an engrossing adventure I stayed up till 2 AM reading.
My only real complaint is the next of the series available on Kindle features a different heroine. I hope the people I met in "Midlife Murder" will also make an appearance there.
Ms. Eastlake, well done.

Trailer Travel: A Visual History of Mobile America Review

Trailer Travel: A Visual History of Mobile America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book brings together a wonderful collection of visual images of travel trailers from the late 1920s through the 1950s. The images come from vintage photographs, publicity brochures, and other publications. A majority of the materials come from the collections of the University of Southern California, the Auto Club of Southern California, and Vintage Vacations (a California travel trailer restoration company). The quality of the image reproduction is excellent making this book a genuine feast for the eyes.
Although subtitled "A Visual History Of Mobile America," the majority of pictures are from California with the rest of the country only sketchily represented if at all. Florida is the only other state to have more than one or two pictures included.
The book has eight chapters. Each begins with one page of text consisting of three paragraphs. The rest of the chapters are illustrations with captions and quotes. The first chapter "Motor Camping" has some of the earliest photos and portrays the beginnings of the travel trailer craze. The second chapter "Selling The dream" contains a collection of illustrations from brochures and advertisements. "Wish You Were Here," the third chapter, is a collection of postcards both humorous and illustrative. The fourth chapter "Trailer Shows" contains pictures from various California trailer shows. Pictures of the latest trailer designs are often enhanced by including attractive female models. "Take A Look Inside" is the next chapter which portrays the interior furnishings of travel trailers. Again attractive female models often enhance the photos. "I've Got This Idea" is a chapter that captures some of the more inventive and original travel trailer designs. A whole chapter is devoted to "Trailer Logos." It was in this chapter that I found the only reference to my 1948 trailer made in Alma, Michigan.
The book ends with a chapter on "Teardrops," compact trailers with outdoor kitchens built into a back hatch. A one page bibliography provides both current and historic books and articles for further reading. A joyful coffee table book, light on text, but very rich on illustrations, that is eye candy for the trailer park crowd.

The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer (Howell reference books) Review

The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer (Howell reference books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the world of horses everyone has an opinion. After deciding to buy a trailer I wanted to do a little research. This book is full of incredible detail about all the possible mishaps your horse could get into and the various design flaws that most trailers have to contribute to those mishaps. It gives detailed explanations of each part of the trailer and is full of opinions about the best design of trailers. The authors do not cite any specific manufacturers but after reading this book I had completely changed my mind about what I wanted. The problem is so much of the information was so scary that I designed my perfect trailer around it, only to learn it would cost me almost $10,000.00 (for a 2-horse). The book is incredibly detailed, well written in layman's terms and has good illustrations and photographs. I learned a lot more about a horse trailer than I ever thought I needed to. It gives you a lot to think about. Mostly I thought about never trailering my horse in someone elses's trailer again.

Trailers are a fact of life in the horse world. Sooner or later, everyone who owns a horse will have to deal with a horse trailer in order to haul to shows, races, hunts, and perhaps even to veterinary clinics. Up to now, when horse owners wanted information on trailers they had to rely on magazine articles or word-of-mouth recommendations. Not anymore. The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer is the first and only book for both owners and buyers of horse trailers. It's a resource that gives prospective buyers, faced with hundreds of models to choose from, the means to make the right choice. It's a manual that gives current owners information on maintaining and caring for their trailers. Foremost, they will learn from lifelong horsewoman Neva Scheve and Thomas G. Scheve, both respected industry insiders, that the safety and comfort of the horse should always be the primary concern. This authoritative book, with more than 175 illustrations, addresses a number of important topics, including how to:* Determine whether to buy a new or a used trailer.* Ask the right questions of the dealer or owner.* Weigh the options and select the best model for your needs.* Evaluate tow vehicles and hitches.* Master pre-trip preparations.* Care for your current trailer.* Load, drive, and use a trailer safely.* Deal with typical exterior, interior, electrical and mechanical problems.* Assess the work of repairmen if the job is more than you can handle."Complete" is not just an idle word: this book has an appendix that gives the names and addresses of the major trailer manufacturers to contact for literature. In all, the Scheves have given horse owners everything they need to make an informed purchasing decision that will benefit themselves and their horses.

I ordered this book after listening to the soundtrack a million times. I am a producer and director for the stage and made the decesion to bring this to the audiences the moment I read it. Delicious comedy and music. We had a three week run with nightly sell outs and very satisfied patrons. Standing ovations became a regular nightly ritual. Don't miss the witty dialogue and touching songs of this musical. A must see and read for anyone looking for some "white trashin', cat scratching, chair crashing and a hell of a whole lot more." If this show is produced in your area, don't miss it. "It's not my fault that cock smokin', cheese sucking, dick in a bag doesn't know a lady when he sees one."

The Young Trailers Review

The Young Trailers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Altsheler was a prolific author of boy's adventure series whose works are all in the public domain and ought to be reprinted in paperbacks. The Young Trailers series is set in the Kentucky woods about the time of the American Revolution. The author's great gift is to keep the exciting incidents coming, one after another. Virtually all of the action takes place outdoors, and a sort of nature mysticism pervades, without softening the adventure. Indians are treated with great respect, though the advance of the white man is regarded as good and inevitable. The heroes, however they may sympathize with their own race, are themselves more attracted to the outdoor life of their adversaries, and regret its passing. It is worth noting that in The Adventures of Augie March, Saul Bellow reveals his familiarity with the series, by comparing a relationship to that between Henry Ware (hero of the Young Trailers) and the Wyandotte chief Timendiquas (who does not appear until a later book in the series.) Those of us who, as boys, had the great good fortune to find an Altsheler series in our local public libraries remember these works with reverence.

This graphic novel takes place in Akron in 1979 and 1980. The lead character is Otto, a dorky eccentric teen who calls himself "The Baron". He gets involved in the punk rock scene and manages to become a hero to local punks. Several real life punk legends appear in the comic, as they perform at the club Otto works at and have misadventures with him. This is a hilarious and at time poignant book that really captures the feel of what punk was like at the time.

Punk Rock & Trailer Parks conjures up the oppressive insanity of growing up in a small town, the day-to-day weirdness of the trailer parks tucked away therein, the magic allure of sex and the necessary comforts of friendship, the mystical power of the counter-culture to turn outcasts into heroes and, most of all, the transcendent power of music, specifically the punk rock of the late 1970's which redefined, transported, and ultimately, perhaps, disappointed a generation.
