Packed with lots of great color photos, this book will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone who is fascinated by cranes and the work they do. The book covers all kind of cranes: cranes, crawler, truck mounted, even small utility cranes. The book covers all the major manufactures and has excellent descriptions. An excellent reference for those interested in building scale crane models as well. The book isn't very technical, but very entertaining.

Every teen aged boy who surfs would love to have an adventure that involved camping out in another country, and trying to find the best waves that never before were surfed. This book will hold their attention and give them a feeling of awe for the kids who experienced all this excitement and these adventures. It's a fun book with a few old photos of the kids at that time in Mexico and Central America in the days when it was a little dangerous to travel there. I know the family, and they are still great surfers, and live on Kauai but travel now all over the world to find those perfect waves....marion sutton

I purchased this book as a gift for my mom. She moved to Los Alamos in 1951 and has really enjoyed reminiscing about the housing and people she first met. A must read for the Los Alamos oldtimers, a fun walk down memory lane.

The King of Babylon Shall: Not Come Against You Review

The King of Babylon Shall: Not Come Against You
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author writes this novel set in Florida with a combination of vigor and poetry and humor that is very rare and wonderful; his many characters pull you deeper and deeper into this story which flies back and forth a generation to gradually reveal the truth of a 20 year old murder. One extraordinary character after another is born on the page and all together form part of the story. No wonder the author can write such very deep and real Elizabethan books for which he is justly famous.

The Chimp Who Loved Me: And other slightly naughty tales of a life with animals Review

The Chimp Who Loved Me: And other slightly naughty tales of a life with animals
Average Reviews:

Good humor is really hard to find, but I have to agree with the first reviewer: this book has it. I even enjoyed the parts that were more informational, because they make you care more about the animals. But most of all, I found Annie's self-deprecation and commentary about the strange events in her life to be pants-wettingly funny. And the animals! OMG! The goat that deliberately gets stuck in the fence so other goats can gang-bang her...the sheep that rounds up the cows like a drill sergeant...Bilbo Baggins, the drunker hamster...the adventures in white trash country trying to buy cows or pigs. I was rolling. I didn't want the book to end, and I certainly hope Annie and Tim write another. If you like to laugh and if you hate sticky-sweet stories about animals, buy this book.

Attack of the Movie Stars Review

Attack of the Movie Stars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Attack of the Movie Stars" is a funny novel. If a movie, advertisements would, undoubtedly, label it,"black comedy." That's because bad things happen to good people, fairly good people, and really bad people. Nobody is exempt.
Five fortyish women--a school teacher, cafe owner, real estate agent, new widow, and the wife of a hardware store owner--have come to believe that the shooting of a Major Motion Picture in their little town of Groversville, Oregon, and the arrival of a famous male actor who--even in the midst of the town's welcoming crowd--seems to notice each and every one of them, is an omen of sorts, a sign that, at long last, they are destined for more in life than small town everydayness. The handsome star will surely leave his shrewish wife and rescue one of them from oblivion if she can just pull herself together--lose a few pounds, tint her hair, wear thong underwear. The story revolves around the women's hot pursuit of this failed, yet dedicated philanderer, their own infighting, and the bored reaction of the man's movie star wife, who is occupied with her own dalliances.
Be assured. The Hollywood power players do not return home unscathed.

A famous Hollywood couple descends on a small town to make a movie. Six weeks later, as they fly away in their private plane, oblivious, and happily discussing their dinner plans (Spago or Mortimer's?), destroyed marriages, heartbreak, emotional, and even physcical wreckage are left in their wake. ( Inspired by an actual Movie Location shoot in the 1970s)--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Brooklyn South: A Story of New York Review

Brooklyn South: A Story of New York

I heard of this book thru my HS alumni newspaper. The author is also an alum of St. Michael's DHS. The story takes place in the neighborhood surrounding old St. Michael's. In addition to a good cops and robbers plot, it is rich with views and insights into the Sunset Park, South Brooklyn, Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights neighborhoods of Brooklyn. The character development and the way in which the plot evolves make this a fun read. It would be ideal for fans of Law & Order or anyone who grew up in the Borough of Churches,

The Ice Cream Con Review

The Ice Cream Con
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having the little money they have stolen from them is getting a little old for Jake and his buddies. The thing is, though, Jake and his gang aren't the toughest bunch of kids, so the only way to get back at these thugs is to outsmart them at their own game. To do this, the kids create a fake gangster, the Big Baresi, who soon becomes a lot more real then Jake ever anticipated.
When a stash of stolen diamonds goes missing, the community truly believes it's the Big Baresi, but as Jake and his friends know, it's not. While trying to clear Baresi's name and keeping his intimidation factor high, the kids go on quite an adventure that includes a stolen ice cream truck, sumo suits, corrupt cops, lots of mobsters, and lots of crime.
Overall, this was a good book. It was humorous and the plot was pretty darn creative. My only complaint is that the book was a real boy book (not that there's anything wrong with that!). From being kicked in the "goolies" to the talk about girlie pictures, the book was clearly meant for adolescent boys. While being a girl and not truly appreciating these topics, I did think the book was good. I found myself laughing aloud many a time and loving the adventures the kids went on.
The author definitely has a talent for making people laugh and I hope that his future novels will be just as funny. As mentioned before, I think that young teen boys will really get a kick out of this book. It would also be a great book for reluctant readers as it's not too long, but provides a substantial story.

Fairy Tale Review

Fairy Tale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is meta-fiction on steroids - the story loops and turns on itself, addresses the readerlove directly, retraces the same ground time and again and then jumps to another reality. The cleverness of Foreman's writing reminds me of John Barth, but Foreman takes his readers into the heart of the Tennessee river country instead of Barth's Chesapeake, carrying us along as he searches for the key that will win back his lost love, the beautiful and frequently remembered Abigail. Foreman's is a finely detailed land of home-made beer, four-wheelers, Civil War reenactors and folks trying to find love, live without it or live with it once they've found it. Foreman travels through this country, lookin' for love in all the wrong places, like Huck Finn in hell, and you go eagerly along, wondering which new memorable character you will meet and what in the world can happen next.
My only quibble is the ending. There were a few early hints that this might be a religious book, but to bring God in at the end to quiet the author's (and he hopes Abigail's) soul, seems to me something of a deus ex machina device.
Still, this is an entertaining book for Christians, meta-fiction fans or anyone else. And Abigail, honey: Never has there been a more creative lover - take the guy back.

Nowhere, Now Here (American Girl (Paperback Unnumbered)) Review

Nowhere, Now Here (American Girl (Paperback Unnumbered))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A lot of books about alpacas (and llamas) would have the reader think that they're The Black Stallion and Lassie with the safety of a stuffed toy all in the same package. Not this book! These are REAL alpacas -- sold unhandled for big bucks and to newbies who haven't a clue about handling them, let alone how to raise them responsibly. The author is to be highly commended for not misrepresenting these animals or the practices of the irresponsible majority who are trying to make a fast buck at the alpacas' and buyers' expense. Alpacas are wonderful animals in their own right and in their own way (I have owned two in addition to a number of llamas), and they can be handleable and enjoyable when given knowledgable and individual handling and training. It is a great disservice to them when they are portrayed in literature as being something the real animal could never possibly live up to.
Likewise, the character Laney is very real, too. She is not a plastic-perfect image of a girl someone else wants, but a person with her own very real and justified feelings about moving to a new place and lifestyle she doesn't want with no say in the matter. Laney is also not one-dimensional, nor a vindictive or irresponsible person. The story of how she reconciles her internal conflicts is both engrossing and healing to anyone who has gone through a similar experience.

The Vicar of Afton Review

The Vicar of Afton
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Vicar of Afton proves to be a thoroughly enjoyable read! With a little bit of genre mixing, Brewster manages to give us a mystery, a romance, a solid Christian fiction book and even throws in a little cross-cultural insight. Though the pace occassionally slows down, Brewster has created likable characters and an interesting story with an ending you may 'think' you suspect, but it still comes with a shock. I'm looking forward to the next book featuring the two main characters, Sam and Rachel. The ending leaves open the possibility of a continuation, so Mr. Brewster better get to it! If you're into solid reads with some mystery and a little theology thrown into the mix, you'll do well to read "The Vicar of Afton".

Following the Yellow Line Review

What courage it must have taken to uproot yourself, sell everything you own and decide to travel all over the country on a motorcycle. I was fascinated with the way people reacted to Stuart and his yellow Honda Goldwing bike. Eveyone greeted him with kindness, warmth and interest. He tells his story with humor. The photos in the book are amazing and they help to bring to life all the people Stuart met.
The book also tells of the not so great times, when the weather wasn't at it's best. Stuart was riding in the rain, snow or cold, raw weather and getting soaked to the skin.
I take my hat off to anyone who decides to do something out of the ordinary and make it an adventure to remember the rest of his life.

The Fisherman's Quilt Review

The Fisherman's Quilt

As I began reading The Fisherman's Quilt, I was suddenly twenty years old again with a world of possibilities. The love I felt for my man and our life together would always make my days full of laughter and wonder. My nights would become mystical in their passion. I knew Nora Hunter, the main character in this novel; my college roommates of so many years ago knew Nora, too. We were Nora. The author's words compelled this reader to make Nora my best friend and give her advice I wish I would have taken. The Fisherman's Quilt took me back to my life thirty years ago and let me remember my own struggles in creating my present. I hope it does this for you, too.

In "The Fisherman's Quilt," young Nora Hunter arrives in Kodiak Alaska with her fisherman husband and new baby. She brings her first, fancy quilt to Alaska, along with an idealistic vision of life on America's last frontier.Nora struggles with the loneliness, danger, ambition, and mistrust inherent in her life, by making quilts celebrating weddings and births, new homes and fresh starts, and finally, her own strength.Nora Hunter knows what it is to desire something passionately that the world seems to conspire to prevent her from obtaining. She is fortunate enough to realize that she has the strength and the imagination to adapt. In the face of abandonment and rejection, she finds something to offer her children and her community."The Fisherman's Quilt" poignantly describes the longing, questioning, and celebration of this modern-day Everywoman. At once an epic, love story, adventure, and a portrait of late twentieth century America marriage, "The Fisherman's Quilt" shows that Nora's adventure has been in her discovery that courage has an everyday currency.

Mosquito Lagoon: A novel of adventure and suspense Review

Mosquito Lagoon: A novel of adventure and suspense
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mosquito Lagoon, and the area around it, is one of the quietest places in Florida. Interstate 95 has pulled the tourist traffic off of US 1 from Daytona Beach to Titusville, leaving the four-lane artery to the locals. Drive the length on any given day and you will pass only a handful of cars. The road is sparsely lined with various commercial establishments and vestiges of Florida's past. The real beauty of the area can be found less than a mile east of the main drag. Once, a thriving fishing industry fueled the economy of towns such as Oak Hill and Scottsmoor. Now, since the gill net ban, fishing guides scratch for a living and the specter of the end of the space industry hangs like a heavy fog over the area. This is the stuff of R.V. Davis' book. In my opinion, the writer is in the same ilk as Carl Hiaasen, if only in his ability to weave a story that captures the essence of what it is to live in Florida and be a Floridian. The story starts slow and shifts between autobiographical glimpses of the main character's life and the first of the protagonists that set the stage for the roller coaster ride that ensues. By Chapter 3, I was hooked like a redfish. Minor formatting glitches and a slew of grammatical errors are irritating at first, but become part of the charm of the book as you are reeled further and further into the drama of Jack and JT Wallace.
