The Model Railroader's Guide to Industries Along the Tracks 3 Review

The Model Railroader's Guide to Industries Along the Tracks 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Just to be clear, the only reason I rated this book "five stars" is because there weren't any more stars to give. This book, and its companions (1 & 2) are absolutely terrific. I have all three volumes (hoping there will be more, hint hint!) and my copies are happily worn and dog-eared. If I have any complaint whatsoever, and it is trivial-- the "worst" thing I can think of to say about 'em, is that I wish he'd done a little more "variations" on the same industries to illustrate better how alternate arrangements might look or common differences in similar industries. On the other hand, if he had, the books would have covered less ground so its a petty complaint at "worst" in my opinion.
BUY THESE BOOKS, they're really great!

Brokeback Mountain: Story to Screenplay Review

Brokeback Mountain: Story to Screenplay
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little volume contains Annie Proulx's original short story version of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN as it appeared in The New Yorker in 1997 along with the screenplay to Ang Lee's film by Larry McMurtry (The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment) and Diana Ossana. The screenwriters retained much of the spareness, tension, and overt and threatened violence of the original story. They even incorporate much of Proulx's unfilmable descriptions in between the characters' speeches (perhaps as cues for method actors). The biggest change from story to screen seems to be the expanded roles of the women in the men's lives--the wives, girlfriends (created from whole cloth), and Ennis's daughter, Alma Jr. This seems justified, given that the story takes place over twenty years, a period in which both main characters, Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, carried out a spotty love affair but constructed their public lives according to more conventional mores. Ennis's love of his daughters is, we feel, genuine and not a substitution or consolation prize. And the fact that she can see her father's loneliness only adds to the pathos of his situation.
Each writer contributes an essay about their experience bringing this story to the big screen. Proulx's "Getting Movied" was especially thoughtful and generous. The volume would have been nicely served, however, had Ang Lee contributed an Introduction. If you're a movie credits geek, this book concludes with the entire closing credits, including the sheep wrangler and bear trainer. Also includes 8 pages of black and white photos from the film.
A nice souvenir for anyone who loves the movie and wants to study it more closely.

Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, Brokeback Mountain is her masterpiece. Brokeback Mountain was originally published in The New Yorker. It won the National Magazine Award. It also won an O. Henry Prize. Included in this volume is Annie Proulx's haunting story about the difficult, dangerous love affair between a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy. Also included is the celebrated screenplay for the major motion picture "Brokeback Mountain," written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. All three writers have contributed essays on the process of adapting this critically acclaimed story for film.

Balance Buddy (Adjustable) Review

Balance Buddy (Adjustable)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We got this to help our reluctant son prepare to ditch the training wheels. We made a deal that he would try riding with the balance buddy for one week, and if he didn't feel more confident, we would reinstall his training wheels. Much to our surprise, after two, 15-minute sessions on consecutive days, he was riding completely independently. We loved seeing our son's confidence level soar to the point that, after 3 sessions, he demanded we remove the balance buddy. Therefore, despite the fact that the balance buddy is a well made, sturdy backsaver, we got very little use out of it.
Instead of abandoning it in the storage shed, we decided to attach it to our 3 1/2 year old daughter's bike, assuming that it would remain there for quite some time. We expected it to take much longer, but after about 8 sessions, she is riding on her own with only an occasional need for assistance. I feel that the Balance Buddy is infinately better than training wheels in helping children learn to balance, as it allows them to sense when they are leaning and self-correct. I highly recommend this for any child who is ready to kick the training wheel habit!!

Burley Urban Trailer System Cargo Trailer Review

Burley Urban Trailer System Cargo Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you use your bike for shopping and errands then you must buy this trailer. The key benefit is that it quickly detaches from the bike and is usable as a granny cart or push cart that can be brought into the next store. It fits on all different bikes and is compatible with a rear rack if you have one. I've used it on my folding mountain bike and my road bike. The seat post trailer makes it easy to use with different bike types. I've had it for 5 weeks now and I've used it for all kinds of shopping. It is convenient to have on the bike and convenient to wheel around on foot.
I bought mine at BFold bike shop in New York City. I use my bike to go to multiple stores on a Saturday, pet shop, farmer's market, grocery store and wine shop. When using panniers I have to detach them and carry them into each store or leave my groceries locked up with the bike outside, which is not acceptable. With the Burley I can bring my groceries into each store, even a small store, and either roll it around with me or if the store is very small I can leave it in a corner while I finish my shopping.
I hardly notice the Burley when it's empty, riding is easy. When it is full I can feel the difference, I am slower, depending on the weight, but that is expected. I have carried heavy things such as 5 gallons of beer in a keg, 25 lbs of kitty litter plus groceries, items from IKEA etc. Riding is not difficult under load, other than it slowing me down a little.
I will post photos of it attached to my bike with a rack. The rack does not interfere with the trailer. The only issue is if you have a side basket, and you load the basket high, then there could be some interference with the trailer as you make a sharp turn. Nevertheless I have overloaded my basket and used the trailer without much of an issue.
It comes with a giant tote bag, which is the bag I use. You can buy some nicer bags. I put a box inside the tote back to give it some form though you don't have to. It might help for some larger items that would otherwise slide left or right and cause the bag to rub up against the wheels. You can use the included straps to attach a second bag above the tote bag, and I frequently attach my messenger bag that way. You could also remove the tote and use some bungee cords or the included straps to tie down something else.
There is a little peg that folds up and down and is needed to stand the trailer on its own when not attached to the bike. This peg will sometimes fold on its own and you have to check it each time before you try to stand up the bag or it might fall over. This is just something to be aware of. Burley could improve it by making the peg fixed instead of folding or have it lock better.
When I am done it folds up really nicely and I can store it in my closet. It's very light for carrying up and down stairs. I really cannot imagine a better trailer. It does everything I need.

Coleman High-Pressure Propane Hose and Adapter Review

Coleman High-Pressure Propane Hose and Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is what I needed and seems to be good quality. Minus one star because the price is so high.
It was hard to tell from the description (here at Amazon and other web sites) if the connectors on this hose were correct for my needs and how it attaches. I ordered it anyway and luckily it is what I needed to connect a propane tank (the type that is normally used for an outdoor grill) to my 25-year old 2-burner Coleman camp stove. One end of this hose has the same connector you find at the top of the small 16oz Coleman propane cylinders -- so it attaches to the metal tube connector that normally goes between a 16oz cylinder and the stove. The other end of this hose attaches to larger propane tanks like the new one I just bought. I don't know what a 20# tank is, but mine is like 3 gallons in size -- the usual kind that people use for outdoor grills. I found out, however, that it does not fit the quick-release connection that I have on a different propane tank that came with my Weber grill. I'll have to see if there's a (quick release) adapter available so that I can use this hose with that other propane tank also.

Grip 30 ft x 4 in Heavy Duty Tow Strap Review

Grip 30 ft x 4 in Heavy Duty Tow Strap
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THIS IS NOT A 30,000 lb strap according to its own label!
Now with the positives: Everything about this strap is FANTASTIC for the money. The webbing was fresh flexible nylon, with very high quality stitching and very nice protective covering over the loops. I would have rated and EASY 5 stars if not for the deceptive advertising. Its better than all but 1 of the straps I have owned in the last 10 years.
SELLER RATES AS 30,000 LB strap. It IS NOT, this is a 10,000 lb working load strap with a 20,000 lb Break rating (per the sewn on label). I dont know if they thought they could add the two numbers together and sell it to people or not.
I encourage you to buy this tow strap for the price, but do not be misled on the rating. Simple solution, buy two since the price is right.

Coleman PerfectFlow Insta Start Grill Stove Review

Coleman PerfectFlow Insta Start Grill Stove
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this stove/grill on sale at a Target store to replace my old liquid fuel stove in time for camping season this past summer. It came with the instastart ignition although it doesn't say so in the Amazon product description. The product picture shows the little red igniter button near the center of the stove front. The grill is an excellent design option allowing for grilling steaks, hot dogs, burgers, sausages, etc., which I do frequently now. The Instastart ignition has worked flawlessly so far.
Propane bottles win hands-down over liquid fuel tanks (no more having to pump the darn thing all the time). The bottles are cheap and with normal use, last through a three-meal day, no problem! I usually get a meal or two the next day, since lunches are typically cold... sandwiches, salads, etc. Most of the time we are away from the camp site at lunch time anyway. I always bring a 'bottle-a-day plus one' to be on the safe side and usually bring a bottle or two home for the next trip (depending on the length of the outting and how much cooking). I can usually find the bottles on sale through the year for just over a buck in the 'big' department stores and load up on them. As far as I can tell, the claim of an even, continuous gas flow is true (high or low)... just like using a gas range at home. Clean up is easy and the grease trap underneath the unit catches all that fat dripping from those New York strip steaks. Two or three strip steaks will fill that grease trap reservoir to the brim, so don't forget to empty it before grilling again. The long grill burner also heats that 10 or 12 inch fry pan across the bottom quickly for bacon, eggs, etc. The grill itself will take some scrubbing when you get home if you have been grilling steaks.
If you're looking to replace that old liquid fuel stove, do yourself a favor and get this unit, you won't be sorry.

Long the authority on propane camping stoves, Coleman steps up to the plate again with its PerfectFlow InstaStart grill stove. Coleman's PerfectFlow appliances regulate the pressure of the propane to provide a consistent cooking performance without flaring or flickering. This steady fuel stream holds true even in cold weather, high altitudes, or when the fuel is low. The stove is equipped with two 10,000 BTU burners, one with a nickel-chrome stove grate and one with a removable die-cast aluminum grill grate. As a result, you can grill burgers and heat chili at the same time. The fuel is long lasting as well: with just a single 16.4-ounce propane fuel cylinder (sold separately), you can use both burners on high for 1.1 hours--more than enough time to prepare a weekend's worth of meals. And lighting the stove couldn't be easier thanks to Coleman's matchless InstaStart technology, which sparks the burners with the touch of a button.
Constructed of durable enamel-painted steel, the PerfectFlow grill stove also includes Coleman's Windblock side panels, which not only shield the burners for maximum heat, but also double as side trays when folded down. Other features include 160 inches of cooking space, a grease management system with a removable, dishwasher-safe tray, and a limited five-year warranty.
About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

I bought this for the wife's Expedition. It fits great and looks great. I found this same item at 5 or 6 different web sites, but it was cheapest here. 4-Bike Swing Down Trailer Hitch Bicycle Rack Review

4-Bike Swing Down Trailer Hitch Bicycle Rack

This is an excellent bike rack which fits in the standard trailer hitch as a "stinger". It's functionality is enhanced because it lowers 45 degrees while loaded, or unloaded so my SUV door, which "swings up" like a hatch lid, can clear the rack which enables my dog to jump in the back, or to load other gear. Bikes can be locked onto the rack, and the rack can be locked onto the car with standard trailer hitch lock from an auto parts store. The rack just takes seconds to remove for other trailer hitch accessories. Love the rack!

Aosom Bicycle Bike Cargo Trailer-yellow and Black Review

Aosom Bicycle Bike Cargo Trailer-yellow and Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This trailer is a very good trailer for carrying groceries or other items that are too big to fit in a basket on the front of your bike. The reason I give this a 4 star rating is because when you are carrying a full load, it could shift poking out the sides and causing it to rub against the tires and putting a hole in the fabric. This is what happened to mine but it can be patched up. No big deal. Just keep a watch on this when hauling a load. Another thing, the trailer cover is not rainproof and if you are carrying anything that can't get wet, then you need to buy what I bought which is some water repellent spray which you can spray all over the top of it. I also put stuff in waterproof bags. These are the only 2 problems that I see with this trailer, other than that, its an excellent trailer and tracks very well. I have read other reviews here and like people say, you hardly notice the trailer behind you because it is very quiet when pulling. I've had alot of people stop me while riding and ask me about it. It also holds alot of weight which sold me onto this trailer in the first place. I would recommend this trailer to others.

InStep Trailblazer Double Bicycle Trailer Review

InStep Trailblazer Double Bicycle Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The day after I received this item I hurt my knee and haven't yet been able to use it; however, we unpacked it and put it together. It was really easy to assemble and then to disassemble and store. ALL the packaging except for one little plastic tie and a 1" foam tube was recyclable - AWESOME! It seems fairly straightforward to attach it to my bike, with a small piece that goes on the bike and stays there. The trailer "hitch" then pops into that when I want to tow it. I have a cruiser bike, so I have yet to see how it fits with my particular bike, but it seems like it will be okay. It also smells really strongly of rubber or plastic - but I think it's the rubber on the wheels. We put them away separately to air them out a bit. I have one child for whom this was intended, but it ends up that my son (9 years old and 55 pounds) could actually fit in it if he had to. The instructions say not to have a child over 50 pounds in it to avoid an imbalance of weight, so I wouldn't PLAN on doing this. BUT in an emergency it would totally work. It feels well-built and I'm really looking forward to using it. I'll update this later if anyone wants to know how it works with my bike...
UPDATE - I've been using it and it's great. It works great with my bike - and I think it would work with any bike. My kids love it. I've even stuffed my son in it and it was fine. It's easy to ride with, it fits through all the spaces my bike fits through. I've ridden my bike with and without it and feel no difference - it's really great. We love it. At first I was taking the wheels off, folding it up and keeping it in its box for ease in storing it. Now I just fold it up and leave the wheels on - it fits standing up on end right next to our bikes. Couldn't be happier!

Schwinn Trailblazer Double Bicycle Trailer Review

Schwinn Trailblazer Double Bicycle Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The trailer was fairly easy to put together and attach to the bike. I was disappointed to realize that the handlebars and stroller wheel have to be carried separately when using the trailer. I thought they attached then folded out of the way but they don't. The harness system did take a few tries to get adjusted so it would hold my 9 month old son somewhat comfortably. It helps to tighten the front straps under the sling seat but not tighten the back strap as much. The shoulder straps sit kind of high on my son's neck near his ears but not to the point that it seems to bother him. There is no head recess to allow room for my son's helmet when biking. The inside pockets/drink holders are a nice feature for older children. The trailer is easy to pull when I am biking - the extra weight is barely noticeable especially on flat surfaces. I also enjoy inline skating but don't recommend this model for that or jogging. The stroller wheel does not roll very smoothly or as fast as I would like and the assemble rattles a lot when going a good pace. I had to keep lifting the wheel up to enjoy the outing. (I did order the Mark III for skating and it rolls smoothly in the stroller mode but I was disappointed with the quality for the higher price.) The trailblazer is a good trailer for the price if you don't plan to use the stroller feature very often.
