What did you discover in researching this book that readers will be excited to learn?
The biggest surprise in writing this book was discovering how basic trailers are. They all still seem to use ladder frames and a very basic braking system. Very little has changed in the world of trailers over the last few decades. When disc brakes and torsion bar suspensions are considered innovative you get the picture.
On the other hand trailers work. They seldom break down and most trailer stores can repair any problems easily and quickly. Try saying that about your new 7-series BMW. It's only when you look at the large RV units that you really encounter problems. Then most of the problems seem to be with the plumbing or HVAC systems; not the trailer itself.
What differentiates this book from any other book on this subject?
This is the most complete trailer book on the market. No other book covers the subject as completely as this book does. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but I just got obsessed with the whole world of trailers.
What is your personal involvement with the subject?
Over the years I've owned far too many bad trailers. One of my life goals on my Bucket List is to own a really nice trailer. My fate in life is to own used trailers that need work. Some people just go down to the local trailer store and write a check. I'll probably never do that.
Besides not having the necessary balance in my checking account I just like messing around with trailers too much. It's a sickness and there's no known cure. If you give most people $50,000 to buy a really nice trailer they would probably do that. If I had $50,000 to spend on a trailer I would probably buy 10 trailers that needed a bunch of work. It's just the way my genetic code works.
What's your favorite part of the book?
I love tires. That means I love trailer tires. It also means I'm weird. I just can't help it. I have spent a lifetime dealing with tires and I actually understand how they work. When you look at old used trailers (which I do on a regular basis) it's shocking how many people are running passenger car tires on their trailer. That's just not a real good ideas folks. Get the real deal. You'll be much safer with real trailer tires on your trailer.
