Charlotte Figg Takes Over Paradise Review

Charlotte Figg Takes Over Paradise

This book starts out fast and holds your attention until the last page, Joyce Magnin is a new to me author, with a writing style that reminds me of Fannie Flagg, its a story of a lady really becoming the person she was meant to be, all it took was the death of her husband, and a move to a trailer park!

Charlotte Figg's husband Herman was the top Fuller brush salesman in his area, basically a unhappy man, Charlotte seemed oppressed by him, but a few pages in he drops dead in the kitchen floor, and even though Charlotte doesn't realize it yet her life is about to change for the better.
When Charlotte finds a life insurance policy in the bottom of Herman's salesman's bag, she knows at least she wont have to worry about money for a while. One of the first changes Charlotte makes is allowing a stray dog, whom she calls Lucky into her life. When Lucky steals the neighbors mail, Charlotte starts looking thru one of their magazines called Road Tripper, a RV magazine. When she comes across an ad that says nice looking double wide for sale with the contact person being Fergus Wrinkel at Paradise Trailer Park, she gets a bit of wanderlust, the picture included in the ad shows an eye catching trailer with wide window and awnings hanging with pots of pink and purple verbena. So she calls and purchases the trailer site unseen. So after selling her home, she heads for Paradise, where she is shocked at what she finds, instead of the pretty trailer in the ad she has purchased a run down mobile home that has racoons living inside it, when she complains to Mr. Wrinkel he informs her she is stuck with the trailer. Charlotte feels like such a fool, but soon she meets some people from the trailer park and they assure her that they will help her get her trailer fixed up.
She meets a quirky bunch of people at the trailer park from Rose Tattoo, to Ginger Rodgers, the trailer park residents each have their own issues. When Rose realizes that Charlotte used to play softball, she convinces Charlotte that they should get a team going in the trailer park. While everyone at the park suspicions that Mr Wrinkel his hiding something, Charlotte believes he is abusing his wife Suzie. When Charlotte encourages Suzie to leave Fergus, she realizes it wont be an easy thing to do, and when Fergus threatens Charlotte will she back off or will she continue to try and help Suzie?
Taking a trip to Paradise with Charlotte was a real adventure. The trailer park was filled with such a cast of characters, and Charlotte fit in perfectly. After the death of her husband, whom she was married to for 26 years, she was able to start living her life the way she wanted, and even though she sometimes made mistakes it seemed as if she had friends that were there to help her, and friends was something she never really had while Herman was alive. This story had some very humorous moments, but also some very serious ones as well, the one thing that Charlotte tended to do when she was upset or worried was bake pies. I really enjoyed the way the author allowed Charlotte to grow from a frumpy oppressed housewife into a lady with courage strength and a sense of who God wants her to be.
The author does an amazing job weaving this story in a way that allows the characters to capture your heart, I felt like I was visiting old friends while reading this book.
If you enjoy a story with a quirky cast of characters, that deals with a few tough topics then pick up this book, you wont regret it.
Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for providing me a review copy of this book.

Newly widowed Charlotte Figg purchases a double-wide trailer sight unseen and moves to the Paradise Trailer Park with her dog Lucky. Unfortunately, neither the trailer nor Paradise are what Charlotte expected. Her trailer is a ramshackle old place in need of major repair, and the people of Paradise are harboring more secrets than Bayer has aspirin. Charlotte s new friend Rose Tattoo learns that Charlotte played softball and convinces her to rally the women of Paradise into a team. Reluctant at first, Charlotte warms to the notion and is soon coaching the Paradise Angels. Meanwhile, Charlotte discovers that the manager of Paradise, Fergus Wrinkel, abuses his wife Suzy. Charlotte sets out to find a way to save Suzy from Fergus and in the process comes to a difficult realization about her own painful marriage.

This book is simply a good read. From cover to cover, it kept my interest. The artwork I think is beautiful, the artist did her own hand lettering (which is a challenging task to pull of well) which really added to the simplicity of the panels. Also, her figure work is phenomenal. Expressions and gestures were all rendered beautifully, which pulled me further into the story. As for the writing, I can't wait for this author to come out with another graphic novel. The story was easy to follow, believable, and interesting. To me, it was everything a comic should be. Read it. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Trailer Park Zombies Review

Trailer Park Zombies

Have you ever felt like you were trapped in a B-Movie? That is what the main characters of Trailer Park Zombie's felt like throughout this creepy little fun romp. The story revolves around three high school friends and one really bad weekend they are having in their trailer park. The story is told from the perspective of Duke (leader, birthday boy and possibly something more) and lets us into his world and what it was like before and after the undead walked into it. With zombie hordes infiltrating their homes and reeking havoc, the three friends have to protect themselves and their neighbors from becoming a zombie buffet. Love, epic battles, a hero, a mystery - what else could you want? Plus, it keeps you guessing until the end. TPZ is a funny, gory, easy read! It has all the best aspects of those B-Movies we all love! I loved it so much I read it twice :)

Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Guide To Livin' Real Good Review

Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Guide To Livin' Real Good

I made the mistake of buying one book as a gift. I'd heard how good Ruby Ann's books are, and I have a pal that is a big Martha Stewart fan, so I ordered this book for her. When it arrived I started to wrap it up, but paused to glance at it. The pictures caught my eye and after just one page I was hooked. Not only didn't I wrap the book, I took it to my bedroom to keep for myself on the nightstand. I first tried to read it as fast as I could before our gift exchange, but with each page my feeling of personal possession grew stronger. I ended up having to buy a second copy to give to my pal, and additional copies to give to my other friends as well. The lesson here is that if you plan on giving "Ruby Ann's Down Home Trailer Park Guide to Livin' Real Good" as a gift, don't open it up, or just pick up two copies, one for the gift and one for you. I've already told all my friends to get me her other books this year. Now if they just come through. Ruby Ann Boxcar is 100% fall-out-of-the-bed-with-laughter funny regardless if you live in a trailer or not.

Flamingo Fatale (A Trailer Park Mystery #1) Review

Flamingo Fatale (A Trailer Park Mystery #1)

I stumbled across this mystery, and I'm so glad I did! Read Harriet Klausner's review for a summary. I'll just add that I enjoyed the language, the characters' problems were real, and just like good Southerners, they enjoyed their Cokes. If you enjoy humorous Southern mysteries, you'll love Jimmie Ruth Evans' new series...at least I hope this is the beginning of a series!

Leftover Dead (Trailer Park Mysteries (Berkley)) Review

Leftover Dead (Trailer Park Mysteries (Berkley))
Average Reviews:

I have so enjoyed this cozy series. I'm almost embarrassed to admit how much I always look forward to the next coming out. That being said, this one just wasn't up to par. Although more specifics will follow, this installment felt a little thrown together--not as polished as the previous stories in the series.
In book five of the Trailer Park mystery series, Wanda Nell and her new husband, Jack, look into a murder that occurred 31 years ago in Tullahoma. The victim, Jenna Rae Howell, was a very pretty young woman who lived and grew up in a city about 4 hours north of there. Her murder was never solved. As a matter of fact, there was obviously a cover up. Jack smells the makings of a book. The sleuthing begins...
Up until now, Wanda Nell Culpepper has been the perfect cozy protagonist--smart, stable, sassy, mouthy, independent, and a joy to be with. Now she is married to Jack Pemberton and, if this installment is any indication, the union isn't doing her any favors. She comes across as less independent--more in need of the man in her life to make things OK. Although I previously considered Wanda Nell Culpepper to be a terrific everyone's mom, Wanda Nell Pemberton comes across as more grandmotherly--weaker, less sure of herself.
In the previous books, the primary focus was always Wanda Nell, her kids, the Kountry Kitchen, and Mayrene. In LEFTOVER DEAD, it is Jack....and his wife. I missed the familiar backdrop of the Culpepper family unit, and unity, providing that (cozy, if you will) stabilizing force. It was that force that made me want to join in and be a part of. In this one, instead of giving us a chance to get used to Jack being one part of the larger picture, we are handed a totally different Kodak moment.
Will I read the next? Definitely. I prefer to think of this as just a bump along the road of rural cozydom. But next time, "Ms. Evans", please allow us some of our familiar turf.
