Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind Review

Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind
Average Reviews:

Having heard Dr. Miller speak about imprinting a foal, I've been a big fan of his work. He's done a lot in the field of horsemanship, helping to educate horse owners. His work is aimed at the amateur horse owner, someone who might not have a background in horses, or who only has one or two in their care. With that said, do I agree with everything he says? No, I do not. However, I did find this book to be a thought provoking collection of essays.
The "ancient secrets" to which Dr. Miller refers is simply the natural way in which a horse is hardwired. Those who work around horses know that they are prey creatures. Their instincts tell them to flee from danger, and barring that, fight to get free. Therefore, many of things that owners and trainers do to them run counter to that instinct. Dr. Miller's book helps the owner and/or trainer to understand a bit more the details in a horse's mind, and understand why a horse may be performing a certain action.
From the title of this book it sounds like it might be the "be-all-end-all" to horsemanship tomes. Certainly "Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind" sounds weighty and important. I'm not saying this book isn't important, but the book cannot, especially in such a slim volume, be the complete handbook to getting inside a horse's psyche. No, this is a title to read, to ponder, and to learn from, and then use as a way to branch out into other books on equine psychology.
With that said, however, I do feel that this book is a worthwhile addition to any horseman's library, and certainly should be on the "must read" list of any serious horse owner.

Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal: A Swift, Effective Method for Permanently Shaping a Horse's Lifetime Behavior Review

Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal: A Swift, Effective Method for Permanently Shaping a Horse's Lifetime Behavior
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book by Robert M. Miller with my very first
miniature horse foal, and it WORKS!!!!
I imprint trained him at birth and some the next day and
everything I did, helped that horse just like he said it would.
His personality is beautiful, he learned the desired responses
well and I know its because of the imprint training. It does not
take much time or effort on your part. I bought a foal that was
not imprint trained and the difference between the two horses
later on is UNBELIEVEABLE. The imprint trained horse is
friendly, obedient, and unafraid of anything ,thanks to this
book. TO me it was well worth the money I paid for it.I expect
2 more foals this year and already have my book ready to
do everything he suggests, I know it will make my life easier
when that little foal becomes a weanling thru full-grown.
For me, it was especially helpful because of my inexperience
with horses but this book would work just as well with the
experienced. It does shape the horses behaviors for LIFE.

IMPRINT TRAINING OF THE NEWBORN FOAL offers an easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach to handling and training newborn foals, as well as numerous techniques and exercises that aid the foal in halter training and later in performing riding maneuvers. Imprinting can be defined as a learning process occurring soon after birth in which a behavior pattern is established. The newborn foal is imprinted to follow and bond with whatever large object looms above it at the time of birth.Dr. Miller's methods lay the foundation for teaching a horse most of what it will need to know to serve as a useful animal for the rest of its life. Early training can, in an amazingly brief period of time, assure an ideal relationship between horse and human, with the horse bonded and submissive to the human. In addition, the horse will be desensitized to the everyday frightening stimuli that typically elicit a flight reaction in the young horse, and which account for the frequent injuries that afflict horses and the people who work with them. The book includes nineteen chapters beginning with initial imprinting training, then following with subsequent sessions, halter training, performance basics, response reinforcement, problem prevention, and sections on racehorses, mules, and brood mares.

Raise Your Hand if You Love Horses: Pat Parelli's Journey from Zero to Hero (Western Horseman Books) Review

Raise Your Hand if You Love Horses: Pat Parelli's Journey from Zero to Hero (Western Horseman Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems that Parelli evokes strong responses. It is possible that professional trainers are particularly, shall we say, enthusiastic, in their negative reviews, since Parelli regularly refers to them as 'predators'. The book is inspiring. The Parelli approach is logical, methodical and well organized. And, the sentiments that Parelli and his wife express are genuinely moving. Yes, the Parellis are unquestionably master merchandisers and that probably turns some off. But, you don't have to spend enormous dollars to benefit from their training methods. The book is well worth the price simply as a 'read' on horsemanship. The techniques are definitely worth trying. And, as far as I can tell (and in contrast to other reviewers' assertions), it certainly doesn't seem that Parelli is recommending that novice riders hop bareback on a horse with no reins and take off at a gallop. Rather, he offers a very standardized, step-wise progression. The book is well worth a serious read, as are Parelli's seminars. Buy the book, spend a weekend at one of their seminars and decide for yourself.

Equiknowlogy 101... Review

Equiknowlogy 101...

I have read and reread this book. I highly suggest that all persons considering buying a horse should read this before they buy and reread it before they put their $$ down and take the horse home. I would have prevented an injury if I had followed Smokies' advise. Very straight forward and common sense advise. Fun to read. I also suggest his other book "Whisper This". Thanks Smokie for your wonderful books.

The follow up to Smokies internationally read book Whisper This..., Equiknowlogy 101... takes a tongue in cheek approach and humorous look at obtaining your degrees in Equiknowlogy...The study of everything horse, (In one easy lifetime lesson)! This study guide....Ok, it's not really a study guide. It's just a bit of drivel about horses, owners and stories that will perhaps make you think, laugh and hopefully better enjoy your horse experience..It will take the reader through virtually, (well just about) everything you can think of when it comes to owning horses, the knowledge required, and some of the bad things that can happen when you are not prepared for it. Working your way up from the PHD, (Pre-horse degree) program, and on to your FHD (First Horse Degree), with step by step help from our staff, you will hopefully learn your lessons from other students of the Equiknowlogy program enrolled in one of the other degree programs. Moving on to your BOH we will take the reader through the realities of horse ownership and hopefully not getting acquainted with the class graduating from Buck Off U. (University), and the You Can't Ride Pretty school for first time horse buyers. The home school study program for hard knocks and reality, and making a lot of contributions to the Foundation for Clinicitis, and the home for unwanted horses and uneducated owners. This study guide is based on true life stories, questions and lessons learned from real people just like you and me. Just everyday folks who have made the ill-advised attempt to get a horse, ride, or do just about anything else you can think of in the equine world, before completing, (or at least getting an good handle on) their studies at Whisper This... College of Equiknowlogy... These lessons are sometimes funny, and sometimes not, but I think you will find them interesting and not something that you will read in your run of the mill horse book! But hopefully what happened to these folks in these studies won't happen you if you take a little time now to do your homework! Now, if your thinking, I all ready know this stuff, so I won't buy it... That's ok! I'm not out to change to horse world or your way of thinking. Just give a little off the cuff advise to folks that might not have $650 bucks to have me help fix their horse after things have gotten out of control. Or the price to pay for that 1200 pound lawn ornament you are about to buy... Or the medical bills and insurance you pay for in the future. Take a read if you like, or not... It's up you. But you just might get a little something from the not so famous folks that know a little something about horses too! Here's hoping you have a great equine experience! Your friend, Smokie. A portion of the proceeds from Smokies books and educational products are donated to the Wisconsin Horse Council Equine Foundation Scholarship fund and the Horsemans Services Scholarship Project.

Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship (A Western Horseman Book) Review

Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship (A Western Horseman Book)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pat Parelli's work is an excellent reference guide for equine enthusiasts at any stage of riding. While his writing style bears the signs of a real show-man, beyond the self-hype lie important ideas and techniques which have, repeatedly, proven exceedingly beneficial for all types of horse-people. He carefully (albeit often somewhat pompously) describes his programme, which consists first of ground-work and then of exercises to be performed in saddle. His very noble goal is to help humans to develop a subtle, understanding relationship with their equine partners.
Having read (and re-read) Parelli's work countless times in the past few months and having consistently applied his programme when "playing" (Parelli believes that humans should never "work" a horse) with my young Quarter Horse, I have witnessed enormous improvements in my horse's demeanour and, crucially, in the trust he has for me. By establishing dominance over my horse using the sensible, humane tactics Parelli recommends, I have made major progress en route to transforming this horse from a fearful, unridden colt into a willing, dependable, "true blue" mount.
I highly endorse Parelli's work; if his programme is applied with persistence, patience, and an open mind, the possibilities in the horse-human relationship are limitless.

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a great resource for those wishing to build an equine facility - on any scale. However, this is not a guide book for horse ownership. If you board your horse somewhere, you do not need this book. If you are shopping for land and want to build your own horse place, then this book is perfect. If you are trying to figure out if your set up is safe and good for your horses, then get this book. If you are dedicated to making the best out of your land and your horse, then this book is the perfect resource, and it will help you decide if your land is right for horses or if horses are right for your land. Appropriate land use is important, and Cherry Hill shows how to incorporate horses into your land management practices - or is it incorporating good land management practices into your horsey haven? Her ideas and standards for barn design are also good industry standards. I highly recomend this book for architects and land planners who design equestrian homes/communities/barns.

I wasn't really sure of what to expect when I started this book. Something about the review grabbed me and I ordered it. But when I began reading it, I found myself transported into Susan Richards' life. I could see myself in her and found the feelings she had. Maybe it's because I lost my mother when I was young (along with my 3 siblings). But mostly it's because I am a lover of life, of all life, and especially animals. And I fell in love with all of her horses. This book made me feel clean and it was absolutely delicious to read. At Chapter 17 I began crying and fortunately I was alone in the house because I sobbed my way to the end, making loud sloppy noises and feeling free to just empty the box of kleenex by my side. But the overall experience of the book was the joy of life. You could feel and smell and hear and see all of the senses of life that were being described. It was a wonderful experience and I am grateful to Amazon for recommending it to me, and to Susan Richards for writing it.

The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer (Howell reference books) Review

The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer (Howell reference books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the world of horses everyone has an opinion. After deciding to buy a trailer I wanted to do a little research. This book is full of incredible detail about all the possible mishaps your horse could get into and the various design flaws that most trailers have to contribute to those mishaps. It gives detailed explanations of each part of the trailer and is full of opinions about the best design of trailers. The authors do not cite any specific manufacturers but after reading this book I had completely changed my mind about what I wanted. The problem is so much of the information was so scary that I designed my perfect trailer around it, only to learn it would cost me almost $10,000.00 (for a 2-horse). The book is incredibly detailed, well written in layman's terms and has good illustrations and photographs. I learned a lot more about a horse trailer than I ever thought I needed to. It gives you a lot to think about. Mostly I thought about never trailering my horse in someone elses's trailer again.

Trailers are a fact of life in the horse world. Sooner or later, everyone who owns a horse will have to deal with a horse trailer in order to haul to shows, races, hunts, and perhaps even to veterinary clinics. Up to now, when horse owners wanted information on trailers they had to rely on magazine articles or word-of-mouth recommendations. Not anymore. The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer is the first and only book for both owners and buyers of horse trailers. It's a resource that gives prospective buyers, faced with hundreds of models to choose from, the means to make the right choice. It's a manual that gives current owners information on maintaining and caring for their trailers. Foremost, they will learn from lifelong horsewoman Neva Scheve and Thomas G. Scheve, both respected industry insiders, that the safety and comfort of the horse should always be the primary concern. This authoritative book, with more than 175 illustrations, addresses a number of important topics, including how to:* Determine whether to buy a new or a used trailer.* Ask the right questions of the dealer or owner.* Weigh the options and select the best model for your needs.* Evaluate tow vehicles and hitches.* Master pre-trip preparations.* Care for your current trailer.* Load, drive, and use a trailer safely.* Deal with typical exterior, interior, electrical and mechanical problems.* Assess the work of repairmen if the job is more than you can handle."Complete" is not just an idle word: this book has an appendix that gives the names and addresses of the major trailer manufacturers to contact for literature. In all, the Scheves have given horse owners everything they need to make an informed purchasing decision that will benefit themselves and their horses.
