Fried Green Zombies Review

Fried Green Zombies
Average Reviews:

Did you ever see one of those news reports about the guys who live out in the country being abducted by aliens and telling a whole story about how they were probed and such? Well, this story could serve as an adendum to that with Chett and Harry, our two hillbilly buddies who discover aliens, zombies, and 4x4's from hell.
The story really starts out with our two hicks just trying to have a relaxed time out hunting and fishing, but they stumble on a tall, burqa wearin' hotty who doesn't speak English. From there they pull their sometime buddy and full time nerd Clay into the story as things get a little crazy when they see a 4x4 come climbing out of what was once a lake but which has been zapped out of existence. Soon the corrupt Sheriff, a couple of aliens in a banged up space craft and hundreds of zombies are involved.
Did I like this wacky tale? Lets just say I got a kick out of it. For an independently produced book it was well written with no real typos or other glitches that took away from the fun of it. Some of it seemed a bit adolescent (Amazon women from space who like to get naked every time the lights dim) but in a good natured, goofy sort of way. The aliens, named Roscoe and Earl, are almost like intergalactic moonshiners in a way. Uncle Crank was another oddball character. To me, the best way to describe this story was to imagine an old episode of the Dukes of Hazard...now drop some serious acid...and you got Fried Green Zombies...though I don't really think any of the zombies, except for the zombie chickens Uncle Crank had, came close to being fried.
If you are looking for an amusing zombie/alien tale then you might find this story to be right up your alley, though the zombies are not the biggest part of the story, except for the ones behind the wheel of the big truck that seems to come up out of the ground lookin' for revenge. Sure, there are plenty of rotting corpses but they are just one part of a pretty complicated story involving a whole lotta strange things going on. If you are looking for something scary, this is probably not your best bet, since the author keeps things pretty light throughout. But overall, this book was a hoot.

Saving Bluestone Belle Review

Saving Bluestone Belle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Young Homer Easton's world crumbled around him when his parents divorced and his horse Benny Two Shoes died. Homer vicariously lived a life through the "Lone Ranger." A whiz at computers, Homer set up an online company to sell Western paraphernalia.
For his tenth birthday his father presented Homer with a magnificent white horse to replace Benny Two Shoes. The horse was repossessed due to a misunderstanding at the bank. Two desperado type characters loaded Bluestone Belle into their truck and hauled her away.
The story revolves around Homer, Dr. Willoughby, his psychiatrist, Joe, his personal trainer, and Maria, the family maid, and their efforts to save Bluestone Belle from a band of criminals.
Narrow escapes, thrilling chases, and death defying risks keep the reader in suspense throughout this fast paced adventure story, for kids, ages 9-12.
The characters are zany and loveable. Maria's frequent use of Spanish phrases gives the story an added dimension.
The illustrations by Mike Bitz are clever and expressive. The author has demonstrated an uncanny sense of understanding of this age group in her choice of vocabulary in both the narrative and in the dialog of her characters.
Young readers will identify with Homer's sense of loneliness as his parents choose career and freedom instead fulfilling parental roles. Romantic innuendos give promise to reconciliation when Homer is kidnapped while attempting to save Bluestone Belle.
This dramatic adventure story is an excellent choice for the classroom, for family night reading, and holds potential for an award winning family film. An excellent read for the whole family.

Wild River Review

Wild River

Ryan feels inept and awkward when compared to his athletically talented older brother, Tanner. Tanner loves all outdoor sports, but Ryan would rather stay indoors and get his adventure from video games. So when Tanner railroads him into a brothers-only kayaking trip, Ryan is apprehensive. But Tanner is so confident and competent that Ryan goes along with him.
The beginning of the trip was easier than Ryan thought it would be. The river was high, and easy to navigate; the sunshine and the fishing were great. Ryan almost began to enjoy himself. The first whitewater chute was exciting and a little scary, but the second chute was bigger, louder, and more dangerous. Just as they started down, Ryan saw something ahead: a black log, right in the middle of the chute, with a jagged end pointing straight at them, and it wasn't moving. Not at all.
When their rubber kayak was impaled by the log, the boys were thrown out into the river. Ryan swam for shore, but Tanner floated downriver, unconscious. Ryan's adventures, pulling his brother to shore and working to save his life and rescue both his brother and himself, make an exciting story for ages 8-12. Especially good for reluctant readers, as the adventures are non-stop, and the style of writing is lively.

It's Ryan versus the river in a race against time to save his brother's life. When twelve-year-old Ryan reluctantly agrees to join his experienced older brother Tanner on a camping trip, he could never have dreamed this would turn into the most frightening day of his life. Ryan's no good at sports or outdoor stuff. He'd rather be home playing video games. But Tanner says it's an easy trip. They'll kayak down the Boulder River, catch fish, and roast marshmallows. But the river is higher than usual, and the kayaking is scary. Tanner isn't worried. But soon after, he's badly hurt in a kayaking accident, leaving Ryan alone and afraid he can't save his brother's life. He's only faced danger in video games. What good are games now when Ryan faces a real-life battle?

This book has it all - great story - so many ups and downs - excitement - and every human emotion possible. Anyone that has traveled abroad or even to different parts of the US will relate to this story. The writing and attention to detail keeps you glued to the pages until the end. I really enjoyed the subtle comedy throughout the novel that keeps you lifted even throughout the most brutal happenings in the drug cartel world. Next time I cross the border,I'm definitely going to buy that Surfing Monkey with blue and white striped swim trunks and sunglasses. Classic!
As a San Diego native and a frequent visitor to Baja California, I was impressed with the amount of detail, references and descriptions of many places people, and culture. Even if you don't live here, by the time you finish the novel, you'll feel like a native. I really hope we get to see this on film, what a great movie it would be.

The Anti-Vampire Tale (The Anti-Vampire Tale, Book 1) Review

The Anti-Vampire Tale (The Anti-Vampire Tale, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very fast read. We get a very quick look into the lives of the two main characters before they meet for maybe five or seven pages or so, and then, bam, they meet and the action takes off and doesn't stop. I was surprised at how fast the book moves and how glued to the pages I was. It's just that kind of an addictive story. There are some new ideas on what a vampire is in this book. Being a longtime vampire fan since discovering Interview with the Vampire in the early 90s in junior high and then reading every vampire story I could find thereafter, I liked what the author had to say about vampires and what they really are. His vampires seem more believable than most others that come off as magical beings with no logic or science to explain their powers.
I have to admit that I'm not a teen or even into teenage lit, but I do have a thing for vampires. So I picked up this book because of that. I was happy that the writing seemed to be a cut above most of what's in this genre. It's a writing style that seems to be more adult contemporary that happens to be about vampires with a love story.

Simon is a vampire, prowling through the dark New Orleans streets that pulse with wild adventure and fangs gleaming in the shadows. He's spent the last few decades as a recluse, aching over a lost love. Now, he's put it behind him, thirsting to fulfill the raging inner need he's deprived himself for so long.
Ruby feels isolated and out of place--lonely, shy, but too strong-minded to go along with the crowd. All that changes when she is dragged out for her birthday and ends up dancing with Simon--mysterious, blue-eyed, and gorgeous. Her body tingles watching his muscled form move--so fast, so smooth, so powerful. His smile is otherworldly, and his kiss charges her with electric energy. All seems to be going well until three other vampires appear in the crowd, turning the dance floor into a horror show.
The other vampires, led by the vicious Roderick, are after a new fix--the new breed. It's a mix of blood and something secret that's driven them to a desperate addiction, making them reckless and willing to tear anyone apart to get to it, and Ruby's best friend, Ambrosia, has something they need to make it. When Ambrosia flees New Orleans for her life, they relentlessly hunt the one person who knows where she is: Ruby.
Stalked by ravenous vampires at every turn, Ruby's only hope for survival is her handsome new love. Through crowded dance floors, wild forests, high-speed car races, and even into Roderick's horrific dwelling filled with hostile vampires, Simon risks his life trying to keep her safe while being outnumbered at every turn and mesmerized by her every second--even while facing death, danger, and darkness.

A great tale about sports car racing in the LA area during the 60's. Lots of detail about the tracks and cars. Gives a feeling of being there, which I suspect the author was. Has a very authentic feel about it. Enough sub-plots and story line to make it both interesting and entertaining.

Memorial Day (Mitch Rapp, Book 5) Review

Memorial Day (Mitch Rapp, Book 5)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Vince Flynn's books are essentially primers on what is needed to combat and defeat terrorisim and the "bad guys." It will not be everyone's cup of tea, because it is painfully honest in it's assessment of where our problems lie and unfortunately they often lie with some of us. If you genuflect to the altar of political correctness, this will be a tough read.
Mitch Rapp returns. Flynn introduces him bluntly to those who have not read his prior novels as he prepares to interrogate five al Qaeda operatives who have been captured in a raid on a secret stronghold: "Calling Rapp a counterterrorism operative was essentially a polite way of ducking the truth. When everything was stripped away, the reality was that that he was an assassin. He has killed, and killed often, for his country, and in his mind 9/11 was proof that he hadn't killed enough."
His interrogation produces the picture of a terrorist attack on the United States that involves a nuclear weapon. The picture is clear enough to cause alarm, but fuzzy enough to make the entire plan a puzzle.
Slowly the puzzle seems to be solved and just when it looks like the threat is past, well, it isn't.
This is vintage Flynn. It is an absolute page turner. It will make you think. It may cause some angst. It should. This is a realistic picture of where we are and what we are doing, both the good and the bad. That's where the angst comes in.

Slab Review

Slab
Average Reviews:

The Slab is the freshest thing I've read in years. With a touch of the subtlety of F.Paul Wilson, some of the strangeness of Dean Koontz, Jeff Mariotte has captured the minds and actions of "real feel" people in a not so normal situation.
Staged in Salton Sea California, this book gives the reader the real feel of this desert isolation and it's quirky residents. Combining a mix of characters that includes a greedy real estate broker, a socially inept but morally strong sheriff, his corrupt deputy, and a cast of outcast characters that mix so well together that the reader feels right at home inside the heads of most of them. The book is a trip!
Written with a supernatural undertone, the pieces of this puzzle flow so well together that as I read, I was not at all disappointed with the prospect of this excellent suspense thriller ending with "more than human" powers being exerted. What starts as a thriller, ends with a supernatural event.
If you like F Paul Wilson you will love The Slab. I did!

I picked this book up for the first time in college when I was suggested it by a good friend. The characters and storyline immediately intrigued me, as they paint a vivid picture in one's mind. I found myself taking the book with me to class and reading throughout my lectures, just dieing to see how it ended. I have since passed the book on to countless friends who then continue to pass it to their friends with rave reviews. Myerchin has captured a culture and time in our history that he is able to present both intellectually and in an exceptionally entertaining manner. Though not my norm, I have since read this book over again, enjoying it just as much as the first time. Truly, 'The Rugaroo' is as fantastic novel that I would recommend to all.

In 1988, a crumbling personal diary is unearthed near an Indian Reservation in North Dakota. The weathered pages reveal disturbing insights into the author's guilt-ridden mind. The journal, written by James Johansen in 1966, details his brief stay on a desolate Reservation. James is a middle-aged psychologist recruited from East Los Angeles who becomes too intrigued with the disjointed stories of a young Indian woman who appears at the door of his primitive two-room Counseling Center. The young woman, Mara, draws him into her stories about the native spirits and offers to reveal the source of her troubling dreams. She leads him to the Rugaroo, the terrifying spirit that promises understanding and control over the weak.'Bonne Homme', an old Chippewa gentleman, urges James to change the direction of his journey before it becomes impossible. The journal also allows the reader to share the touching relationship between the desperate psychologist and a warm and caring nurse from the Public Health Service. Barbara Lonepine is the beautiful Sioux Indian who gently tries to pull James away from his compulsion with the spirit that fills his tormented dreams and his tortured waking hours. The disintegrating document lays bare a journey that James Johansen begins with innocent fascination. The childlike fascination slowly becomes an obsession that compels him toward a path of awful destruction. These moldy pages pulled from the earth allow us to understand how the Rugaroo is an allegory of the human collective unconscious.

3 Aces Review

3 Aces
Average Reviews:

3 AcesFinally we're lucky enough to get a novel about the American road, the loneliness, the exhaustion, the police harassment, the crooked trucking company owners and warehouse receivers, and the killer storms and blinding whiteouts, written by an author whose knowledge comes from having driven those roads for many years as a long haul trucker.
And a novel about gambling, the addiction, the excitement, and the life and death dangers of playing for really high stakes by an author who has dealt craps in Atlantic City and seen high-rolling men and women broken over the casino tables.
These two stories are skillfully blended by a new novelist, Richard Ide, who waited until he had experienced life on the edge of several worlds before sitting down and giving us this story--and what a story.
It comes roaring off the pages with the power of the red Peterbuilt Model 379 with its two-hundred-and-fifty-inch wheelbase into which protagonist Abner Weaver sinks his life savings. But if Abner is driving the truck, he is being driven by memories of his time in Vietnam and the Montagnard tribesman who sacrificed his life to save Abner Weaver's.
And then there's Dawn Carlisle, who, when we first meet her as she hitches a ride with Weaver, seems nothing more than an alcoholic tramp on the run from a lousy past. But Richard Ide has a surprise for us because it turns out Dawn Carlisle is a crackerjack poker player who, well into the novel, ends up being forced into playing a game of Texas hold'em so packed with suspense and surprises that it's a toss-up who is more exhausted at the end of the game--Dawn or the reader.
But if the emerging love story of Dawn Carlisle and Abner Weaver is the road down which Ide takes us, he makes sure that road is full of detours and barricades in the person of Karl Stohner, a multi-millionaire businessman with global connections, who is truly one of the most vicious villains in contemporary American fiction and who owns the trucking company for which Abner and, later, Dawn, are driving.
Neither as rich nor as powerful as Stohner, but equally savage is Tracker, a brutish trucker driver who, along with his henchmen Slicer, Ironball, Sidewinder, and Flower Boy are bent on taking Abner's life and Dawn's body.
Finally, there is Pip, the small dog they save and who becomes their loyal bodyguard, a devotion that, in the end, costs him his life.
Ide has given us a big novel--big ideas, big excitement, big characters, and big suspense. He knows what he's writing about and he shares that knowledge with us.

Super Stock Rookie (Motor Novels) Review

Super Stock Rookie (Motor Novels)
Average Reviews:

SUPER STOCK ROOKIE is another fast-paced racing story by Will Weaver. This is the second in his MOTOR NOVEL series and is sure to grab the attention of reluctant teen readers - even if they aren't particularly racing fans.
Trace Bonham has been racing Street Stock for years on small town tracks throughout the northern Midwest. Now, it's possible that he might get a chance to race a new, top-of-the-line Super Stock car. All he has to do is attend a tryout sponsored by a group called Team Blu and hope for the best.
Joining Trace are some of his friends from his hometown track at Headwaters Speedway. Mel runs the track with her dad. Patrick sings the national anthem before races, does grunt work around the track, and wishes he could be a driver someday. There are also other racing teams that have watched Trace grow into the racer he is today. All of them wish him the best at the tryout, but if he makes it, will his success change these longtime relationships?
Team Blu offers Trace the best of everything - a great new car, topnotch mechanics and pit crew, and a super trailer complete with his own quality sleeping quarters. He just has to drive fast, look great, and promote their product. Seems pretty simple, but ...
I'm not a racing fan at all, but I found myself caught up in the action from the very first page. Weaver's first MOTOR NOVEL, titled SATURDAY NIGHT DIRT, was also a page-turner, so I'm definitely looking forward to whatever follows next.

Dead Reckoning by Rachelle McCalla ISBN-978-0-373-44450-2
This is the third book in the series. The first is Out On A Limb and the second is Danger on Her Doorstep. Excellent suspense books that keep you guessing.
Ginny McCutcheon left home right after high school and joined the Dare Divas, an all female stunt pilot troupe. She changed her name to Ginger McAlister. She had always admired Ben McAlister. He was older than she was and had joined the Air Force and she considered him the greatest pilot ever. He was now standing in front of her in a field after almost causing a crash. There had been so many accidents with the troupe lately he had scared her coming into her air space. And he was saying he was there to take her home.
Ben McAlister did not think he would ever get to meet Ginger McAlister face to face. He had seen her show several times. Almost bought her poster, almost. He was surprised when his friend, Cutch, had shown him a recent picture of his little sister Ginny and he recognized her as being Ginger. Cutch had married Ben's cousin Elise and ended a long feud between the McAlister's and McCutcheon's. They had a small wedding because they wanted Ben's dad there before his cancer took him. In a few weeks they were having a large wedding and celebration and Cutch wanted Ginny home early. They had read of all the accidents around her the last few months and decided she needed to come home where they could watch over her.
Ginny was not going to go back to Holyoake, Iowa. She did not want to bring the trouble surrounding her back there and she needed to keep her distance from this handsome airman. She had always admired Ben and now seeing him up close was worse. After he rescues her several times since his arrival she realizes she needs to leave Wyoming though. Trouble don't stop there, a storm and emergency landing in the middle of Nebraska, a sprained ankle and one incident after another allows Ben to continue to rescue her.
