(More customer reviews)Vince Flynn's books are essentially primers on what is needed to combat and defeat terrorisim and the "bad guys." It will not be everyone's cup of tea, because it is painfully honest in it's assessment of where our problems lie and unfortunately they often lie with some of us. If you genuflect to the altar of political correctness, this will be a tough read.
Mitch Rapp returns. Flynn introduces him bluntly to those who have not read his prior novels as he prepares to interrogate five al Qaeda operatives who have been captured in a raid on a secret stronghold: "Calling Rapp a counterterrorism operative was essentially a polite way of ducking the truth. When everything was stripped away, the reality was that that he was an assassin. He has killed, and killed often, for his country, and in his mind 9/11 was proof that he hadn't killed enough."
His interrogation produces the picture of a terrorist attack on the United States that involves a nuclear weapon. The picture is clear enough to cause alarm, but fuzzy enough to make the entire plan a puzzle.
Slowly the puzzle seems to be solved and just when it looks like the threat is past, well, it isn't.
This is vintage Flynn. It is an absolute page turner. It will make you think. It may cause some angst. It should. This is a realistic picture of where we are and what we are doing, both the good and the bad. That's where the angst comes in.

Soon, Paul's nightmares are taking on an even deeper meaning than he could have ever imagined.
NIGHT WINGS is an exciting story that blends an ancient legend with modern criminals. It gives the reader heroes to cheer for and villains to hiss at, and something scary that literally goes bump in the night. What's not to like?
It also offers a fascinating peek at some Native American traditions and beliefs from an author who is himself of Abenaki heritage.
NIGHT WINGS is recommended for readers who like a scary story told in an engaging style. It is a fairly short novel, which makes it especially appropriate for younger readers. Older readers might be left wanting a longer tale, however. They are probably used to more character development and multiple plot lines, both of which are largely lacking in this book.
Nevertheless, NIGHT WINGS is an engaging story about a fascinating Native American legend that should have appeal for horror fans.

Mrs. Pollifax Pursued (Mrs. Pollifax Mysteries) Review

(More customer reviews)I had read a Mrs. Pollifax novel before and not enjoyed it at all. This is the first time i've tried one after reading two other Gilman novels, and i expected to like it. I do. It is a funny thing, however, that i do not enjoy it as much as her other, non-series novels. Somehow it is a little forced, a bit as thought she feels she really needs to write this to satisfy the readers who love Mrs. Pollifax. It is far less believable a story than "Thale's Folly" was, for instance, though the characters are, perhaps, less exotic than "Thale's". There is something about the set-up, some fashion in which Gilman is saying, "I know none of this is at all true to life, but here you are ~ you wanted it ~ hope you like it." Several of the characters ~ Kadi, Willie, Boozy Tim, Mrs. Pollifax herself ~ are nice, believable, real even; it must be the situation they find themselves in which displeases me. The plot relies on coincidence too much for its resolution, and does not carry the ring of truth a perect novel makes echo in my mind. Looking back onto it, i feel that all it is is some real charactes interacting on a cardboard plot; i was never drawnn in the way i want to be by any book i read. Nevertheless, a fun read; i will try another Mrs. Pollifax, to be sure ~ along with any non-Pollifax Gilmans i can find.
