Brockmann delivers drama, comedy and believable, three-dimensional characterizations in this tale of Jericho Beaumont, a former a-list actor trying to rebuild his career after its flaming wreck due to his prescription-drug and alcohol abuse, and Kate O'Laughlin, a first time producer and screenwriter who is determined to get her independant movie made and made right, even if she has to demand her lead actor submit to daily drug testing and 24/7 supervision.The secondary characters also shine, particularly Susie McCoy, a 15-year-old child star who is trying to be taken seriously in her first adult role, and Jamaal Hawkes, a young, African-American man struggling to figure out how to deliver his best performance in the role of a slave when all he feels is anger and humiliation at the thought of being another man's property.Brockmann has obviously done her research on both movie production, and substance abuse and recovery. Yet, while the book deals with some very serious issues, the story and characters never wallow in self-pity or melodrama. I read very little romance, and buy even less of it new, but Suzanne Brockmann's name is at the top of my list. Read this book. Then do yourself a favor, and look into Suzanne Brockmann's backlist. Her books are well worth your time.

Enter wealthy playboy Devlin Temple. Is he the knight in shining armor who will rescue Hope's farm from financial ruin? Or is he a self-centered opportunist out to rob her of her life's work? Hope isn't quite sure, but she discovers she enjoys Devlin's attentions.
When unlikely accidents keep occurring at the farm, Hope is forced to consider that someone wants control of her farm badly enough to kill her.
This is a wonderful romantic suspense novel for animal lovers!

(More customer reviews)3 AcesFinally we're lucky enough to get a novel about the American road, the loneliness, the exhaustion, the police harassment, the crooked trucking company owners and warehouse receivers, and the killer storms and blinding whiteouts, written by an author whose knowledge comes from having driven those roads for many years as a long haul trucker.
And a novel about gambling, the addiction, the excitement, and the life and death dangers of playing for really high stakes by an author who has dealt craps in Atlantic City and seen high-rolling men and women broken over the casino tables.
These two stories are skillfully blended by a new novelist, Richard Ide, who waited until he had experienced life on the edge of several worlds before sitting down and giving us this story--and what a story.
It comes roaring off the pages with the power of the red Peterbuilt Model 379 with its two-hundred-and-fifty-inch wheelbase into which protagonist Abner Weaver sinks his life savings. But if Abner is driving the truck, he is being driven by memories of his time in Vietnam and the Montagnard tribesman who sacrificed his life to save Abner Weaver's.
And then there's Dawn Carlisle, who, when we first meet her as she hitches a ride with Weaver, seems nothing more than an alcoholic tramp on the run from a lousy past. But Richard Ide has a surprise for us because it turns out Dawn Carlisle is a crackerjack poker player who, well into the novel, ends up being forced into playing a game of Texas hold'em so packed with suspense and surprises that it's a toss-up who is more exhausted at the end of the game--Dawn or the reader.
But if the emerging love story of Dawn Carlisle and Abner Weaver is the road down which Ide takes us, he makes sure that road is full of detours and barricades in the person of Karl Stohner, a multi-millionaire businessman with global connections, who is truly one of the most vicious villains in contemporary American fiction and who owns the trucking company for which Abner and, later, Dawn, are driving.
Neither as rich nor as powerful as Stohner, but equally savage is Tracker, a brutish trucker driver who, along with his henchmen Slicer, Ironball, Sidewinder, and Flower Boy are bent on taking Abner's life and Dawn's body.
Finally, there is Pip, the small dog they save and who becomes their loyal bodyguard, a devotion that, in the end, costs him his life.
Ide has given us a big novel--big ideas, big excitement, big characters, and big suspense. He knows what he's writing about and he shares that knowledge with us.

On Berryhill Road Review

(More customer reviews)Fallon McKniere is a character you can't help rooting for. She's a member of America's working poor. Employed as a convenience store clerk, she can barely afford the rent on the rundown trailer she shares with her mentally ill mother. In order to put food on the table, she salvages items past their expiration dates from the store's dumpster. Her malnourishment is plainly evident on her already petite stature. However, beneath the fragile exterior is a girl determined to survive.
How did Fallon find herself in such dire straits? When she was 6-years-old, her father allegedly committed suicide after the Navy discovered he was embezzling money from weapons sales. An audit trail led back to orders containing his signature. His body was found on the Berryhill Road property he had purchased with the stolen money for a family home.
The disgraceful actions of her father made Fallon and her mother outcasts in their small Florida town. Her mother could not find decent work and fell into a deep depression refusing to leave their tiny trailer. Fallon became an outcast and ended up dropping out of school. While her mother drifted into a child-like state, Fallon shouldered the burden of trying to make ends meet.
Donovan Pfarr, an airplane mechanic at the local Navy base, finds his life upended when he discovers his blond bombshell of a wife in bed with his friend. After filing for divorce, he succumbs to drink and despair. However, a random act of kindness by Fallon knocks him out of his self-absorption. Working the night shift at the store, Fallon, who has nothing, pays for Donovan's purchase when he realizes he has left his money at home. By doing so, Fallon is brought to the forefront of Donovan's consciousness.
He is the first person in a long time to take notice of Fallon, a girl living in a state of social isolation. He makes the effort to get to know her, at first out of gratitude. But he begins to admire her strength of character. However, her pitiable physical condition worries him. He asks her out with the sole intention of providing her with something to eat. Yet as often happens, when two broken people come together, they end up making each other whole.
During this time, Fallon receives a letter informing her that a trust has been established in her name by an anonymous donor. Ten thousand dollars is wired into her bank account. Suspicious of the money and not willing to accept charity, Fallon does not touch her unexpected windfall even when Donovan tries to convince her otherwise.
Just as Donovan and Fallon are falling in love, Donovan's ex-wife returns to re-stake her claim. Fallon's mother is taken to the hospital by intervening paramedics when she barricades herself in her bedroom. While a man connected to the demise of Fallon's father returns to town with a murderous intent.
I am continually impressed with the talent of this self-published author. I am an avid reader, and Lyn's stories are addicting. Once you start reading, you can't put her books down. She creates likable, realistic characters whose morality is put to the test - whether it be by the temptation of desire, refusing help when it is needed or neglecting one's duty for selfish pursuits.
There are only a few minor flaws with On Berryhill Road. The ending is a bit rushed. I realize that suspense novels are fast-paced, but I would have liked the concluding chapters to have been fleshed out a bit more. Also for the cover of the book, I would have preferred a more realistic image of Fallon. This is NOT a cheesy romance novel, and the cover doesn't portray the depth of feeling that the narrative possesses. I would not want it to deter a potential reader from picking it up based on a superficial judgment of the cover image.
Overall, Tommie Lyn captures the determined struggle of the working poor through the poignant heart of Fallon McKniere.

Mia Trentino works with Worldmove Inc. - she facilitates big moves for large corporations. She is sent to Siberia to help our Russian friends, and is given a partner, a sexy man named Douglas Farland. What she doesn't know, our hero is with a super secret organization that makes the FBI look like the YMCA! He is in Siberia to investigate drug dealings and meth labs...while he's undercover, well...he and Mia find themselves falling in love. But he hides his secret agent persona from Mia, and then needs to earn her trust. This book shows Siberia is really cold, and has some cold villians there too. As well as neat operatives on the good guys' side too.
There are some tender moments for us romantics. Little details that help make a book memorable -

Torn Apart (Storm Front) Review

(More customer reviews)This book was much better than the first in the trilogy. So much so that it almost seems like 2 different authors. Sharon Sala does seem to be either a big hit or a big miss for me. The suspense was high throughout the book. It is not often that I wish over and over again that a character would just die. But in this one I did.
Small SPOILER below:
At first I was not sure that I would be able to read a book about a young boy being kidnapped by a pedophile since I have 2 young boys myself. For those who might feel as I do, the boy is never actually molested. That made it bearable for me. The boy is well written and I think responds appropriately for a child his age, not seeming older than he was, which is a problem in many books.
The love story was not really a main element in the book. The hero and heroine were separated at the time of the kidnapping but they still loved each other. As soon as the hero gets back to the heroine all their romantic type problems are over. So if you're looking for a traditional romance here, you're not really going to get it. It is sweet when they get back together and become stronger than each is alone, but the thrust of the story is finding and saving Bobby.
The author winds the story through the POVs of several characters showing the trail that eventually leads to Bobby's rescue. It is very well done and never intrusive or abrupt when the POV changes.
I'm glad I stuck with the series after the much weaker first volume.

Desert Heat Review

The rodeo is a whole new world. Cowboys, barrel racers, and courageous clowns have their own civilization in which Patience becomes enthralled. It has its own inherent romance, and Patience soon has to face her fears when she gets entangled with an overly amorous cowboy. Before trouble can get out of hand, she is rescued by the someone who won't be turned aside. Dallas embodies everything a man ought to be, and is willing to be there for Patience.
When the city girl learns that danger lurks even there, a serial killer is on the loose, she will need all her own skills and all of Dallas' courage to handle the situation. If she lives through it, it will be time to go home, and leave behind her heart. Can she do it, or is there another way?
**** Some writers pen such wonderful books that reviewers almost hate them; it's hard to write about the story without letting out too much, and then reading lesser books is painful. However, although Kat Martin fits this category, I don't want her to ever stop. She makes the settings and people seem real, yet still has the slight larger than life quality that makes reading her books an escape from reality. ****

Once I got into the book, the characters were fairly easy to keep track of and there wasn't that much about the horse world to make it confusing. I will admit, I did figure out who the real criminals were before it ended. Nonetheless, it was a great read and I read it in a day or so.

Midlife Murder: A Texas Trailer Park Mystery Review

The characters sustain this wonderful romp. Five women create friendships which carry the day, beating a murder rap.
I was afraid this would be one of those low cost Kindle illiterates. Not at all. The interaction and support these women give each other creates a fascinating story.
The legal details are a little iffy, the cops are unbelievably heavy-hunted, several times the wrong word was used (council when she meant counsel, for example). But these are piddling complaints to an engrossing adventure I stayed up till 2 AM reading.
My only real complaint is the next of the series available on Kindle features a different heroine. I hope the people I met in "Midlife Murder" will also make an appearance there.
