Dodge & Plymouth Muscle Car Red Book, 2nd Ed. Review

Dodge and Plymouth Muscle Car Red Book, 2nd Ed.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
By and large, "Dodge & Plymouth Muscle Car Red Book" is a very useful tool for those involved with restoring classic cars, classic car shows, scale-model car enthusiasts, etc. Even classic game show fans can find this book helpful when playing along with those merchandise giveaway shows from the 1960s and 1970s (e.g., "Let's Make a Deal"). Yes, there are some omissions that some might find irritating, or might even detract from its usefulness. I would have considered this book even more helpful had it listed the contents of option packages; it does give some listings for the performance packages (what most people are interested in, I'm sure), but many people I'm sure are also interested in the contents of the trim, convenience and Quick Order (i.e., Basic Group and Basic Radio Group) packages as well. And, unlike Sessler's "Red Book" for Chevrolet Super Sport models, this book does not list installation rates or options for a particular model or its sister lines; e.g., in the section for the 1970 Plymouth Fury GT, there's no listings for the Plymouth I, II, III and Sport Fury or Suburban station wagon models (the Chevrolet book lists options, prices and installation rates for all Super Sport models and their more conservative family car bretheren). Some people who are restoring the family car members of a line might find this book helpful, too. Also, I also think the omission of year-by-year listings, VINs, prices, weights, etc., for the 1956-1971 Plymouth Sport Fury serves as a turn-off to fans of this model. Also, some people might be interested in special order, Mopar custom accessory and dealer-installed option lists, too (for that finishing touch to that 100-point show car). Hopefully, some or all of these issues will be addressed in a revised edition of "Dodge & Plymouth Muscle Car Red Book." Still, a very useful book for many Mopar muscle car fans that will be used and appreciated by all.

Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care, Maintenance, and Repair Review

Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care, Maintenance, and Repair

We are a Home Educating family (12th year) and have 2 teenagers and 2 more coming up. After reviewing this book online, we ordered a copy, along with 2 workbooks as our son had requested "Auto Shop" as an elective this year. It is our primary text for the first semester, covering everything from purchasing your car to maintenance/repairs and basic auto care. Our son is getting more out of it than we could hope for and wants to know when there will be a sequel on 'customizing' your car! =) We decided to make it a required course/text for all teens in our fam who are looking to purchase/own their own car. We highly recommend it!!! Oh, and the CD that comes with the kit puts the 'icing on the cake', including all the administrative extras you, as instructor, will need.+++

The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing
By Brent Peterson
"Complete" is the key word here. (The "Idiot's Guides" are what I always search for at bookstores when I need help with anything from computer programs to minor auto repairs.) I cannot think of one subject relating to RVing that has been left out of this book. Our very own Brent Peterson's new book covers ever so many topics regarding the RV lifestyle. Jody Schaeffer has illustrated The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing with photographs being provided by Gary Bunzer. Peterson was generous in giving credit to those that double-checked and edited his information.
Though Peterson had been taken on camping trips in his young years, he hadn't really been a true RVer until after he had been working for some time as a RV editor. This book has been written with humor and honesty, including many of the mistakes he made along the way, and how and what he learned from those mistakes.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing opens with basic information regarding exactly what advantages RVing can offer you, such as freedom and choices during your trip, and what you can expect from RVing. With nearly 10 million RVs on the roads, it is not just older retirees enjoying the freedom a RV offers, but all types of travelers of all ages are enjoying even weekend getaways. There is an extremely useful pre-trip reference checklist at the beginning of the book that tells you what to check for, step by step, with the engine, exterior, interior, cockpit, towed vehicles and what to check for as you leave..

First you will learn of the various types of RVs and towables that are available and how to zero in on what will fit you and your expectations of a RV. Once you have narrowed your choices, Peterson walks you through the maize of what to look for on the inside and outside of your rig choices and explains what you need to watch out for when purchasing the vehicle. Topics include everything from pushy salesmen to plumbing systems.

Peterson then teaches you all about towing vehicles including information on the amount of weight and the various types of weight ratings, hitches, brakes, safety chains, mirrors, tow bars, tow dollies, trailers, fifth-wheels and how important checking all connections before leaving are. Included are many driving tips, the Seven Deadly Driving Sins, getting lost, navigation systems and the importance of weight limits. Also discussed are how to choose where you will be spending the night, hookups, weather conditions and staying in touch with civilization while traveling.
Throughout the book are listed many helpful hints that include classifications, such as "One for the Road" which has extremely helpful information on everything from weights, amps and volts to where fish are biting. "Road Scholar" which gives extra hints and information on all things concerning RVs and gives a bit of reassurance for the instances you might think you've really screwed up. "Pull Over" sections are the more important issues to look out for. "RVocabulary" covers the special language reserved for the RV crowd. Each chapter ends with "The Least You Need to Know" which boils down all chapter information to the more pertinent facts.
Whether you are a fulltime RVer or just entertaining the thought of buying a rig, this 372 page book is a must have. You can buy the book at any Barnes & Noble bookstore for $16.95, or directly on line at www.amazon.com or at www.idiotsguides.com. The day that I checked at Amazon they were having a sale and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing" by Brent Peterson was on sale for $13.26.

Use this on a Toyota Matrix. Easy to put together and attach/remove to/from the hitch. Heavy duty. Lots of holddown holes for strapping. I don't max out the max load capacity because I only have a class I hitch, but I have no doubts the carrier would handle it.

I shopped for a roof basket for my 06 Jeep Commander. I wanted a basket that would utilize my existing factory rack. The Valley rack compares favorably to the Yakima Load Warrior at 1/2 the price. The reviews on both racks are fantastic the only con on the Yakima is price. I purchased the extension as well off Amazon for about $55.00. The rack at 38" X 62" ended up costing about $215.00. Installation was a snap.

Guide Gear® Hitch Hauler Rack Review

Guide GearĀ® Hitch Hauler Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It has been 2 months and I still do not have a complete product. I was unable to assemble the first unit that was sent to me as one of the basket halves had a hole off location by 1/4 of an inch so I was unable to assemble. When I called the company to inform them of the part problem the offered to send me a replacement part. After waiting 2 weeks for the replacement part I was only further disappointed as they sent me the wrong part. Once again I called the company and told them of error they had made and they then said they would send me out the right this next time. After waiting another 2 weeks for the 2nd replacement part only once again to find they once again sent the wrong part. Now when I called them and told them to just send me a complete assembly and not risk getting the wrong part for a third time they agreed but only after they received all the parts they sent me along with the first whole unit. What nerve they have to expect me to box up and ship back all parts before they would send out a replacement. When I told them that if they wanted to operate this way they they can just take it all back and credit me. Their response was OK. I would not buy a single item from this company as I suspect it run by morons and they do not know what customer service is. This has been the worst experience I have had with any company. I hope this company does under as they do not deserve to be in business. No company should profit from incompetency at all levels!!!

48" Folding Hitch Receiver Cargo Basket Review

48 Folding Hitch Receiver Cargo Basket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife, 2 boys, and I took a road trip from Oklahoma to D.C. We road trip every summer but with the boys growing so much, we needed some extra space in the ol' Pathfinder. I ordered this cargo carrier and assembly was quite simple, especially for someone like me. I also ordered the locking hitch so I didn't have to worry about theft.
We were able to fit 2 large suitcases and 1 large Nike bag on the carrier (1 suitcase laid down on one side, 1 suitcase sat vertical/straight up in the middle, and the bag was on the other side). The cargo carrier created so much room for my 2 boys and wife, they almost didn't know what to do! They were able to stretch out, watch movies, and even sleep comfortably while the "cargo" rode outside in the cargo carrier. I'm so glad I purchased it. I'm wishing I had bought one YEARS ago! But hey, this "CC" (as we called it) has plenty more miles and trips to go!
The CC also folds up easily and nicely and I never heard it rattle or make noise. I did use plenty of bungie cords to make sure my cargo wasn't going anywhere. Also, make sure you do make a Plan B in case of rain. I brought several 55 gallon trash bags and that did the trick.
I would highly recommend to anyone who loves "road-trippin" and would like some extra space in their vehicle to purchase this cargo carrier! I think my wife and boys would tell you to "get it so we have room to SLEEP!"

500LB Capacity 2" Hitch Mount Fold up Cargo Carrier Review

500LB Capacity 2 Hitch Mount Fold up Cargo Carrier

I bought my Cargo Carrier a few years ago to carry firewood for bonfires with groups of friends. It is amazing how often I use my Cargo Carrier to move around items that I normally wouldn't want in my vehicle, such as; sandy beach furniture, bags of concrete, grills and potentially leaking coolers. The best part about this particular model is the entire cargo carrier folds up and locks into place so that I can still have my cargo carrier with me at all times even if I'm not using it (extends about 6 inches). It makes it extremely useful to be able to leave it on the back of the vehicle when not in use and not having to take it on and off (as many times, you are away from home before you realize you need it). It turns any vehicle with a tow hitch into a 60" x 20" bed pickup truck.

Got it now, put it together (3 bolts + Nuts), looks like the photos here on Amazon. Here are the facts; The "Product Features" listed as of this review have the specs correct. However, the "Product Description" is wrong. This fits a 1-1/4 inch receiver (NOT a 2 inch) with a capacity of 300 pounds (NOT 500 pounds). In the manual that came with this, is does say that if you have a heavy duty (5,000LB) or better rating on the hitch on your vehicle, that this can carry 500lbs, but on the physical rack, it has a safety sticker that reads, "DO NOT EXCEED 300 lbs".
I am just telling you everything to help you make a good buying decision. It does have a good build, looks like it would last for quite a while. So if the specs I listed above fits what you are looking for, I would recommend buying it.

500 Lb Hitch Mount Hual Aluminum Cargo Carrier Basket (ALUMCARGOCARRIER#92655) Review

500 Lb Hitch Mount Hual Aluminum Cargo Carrier Basket (ALUMCARGOCARRIER#92655)
Average Reviews:

I suffer from horrible buyers remorse, so I tend to research 'everything' prior to paying money for it. In this case, I looked at just about all of the hitches available and ultimately went with this one for a couple reasons.
First, it's made of aluminum, so Much lighter than those made of steel without sacrificing strength, as well as rust proof--only the 2" shank is steel. Second, this carrier was half the cost of most others (and I was able to pick it up at Harbor Freight and avoid paying shipping).
It sticks straight out from the hitch, so I bought an extension with a 6" rise that helps a lot. I ordered a 48" Rola cargo bag from Amazon that fits this carrier like a glove. We can now keep all of our luggage and miscellaneous 'stuff' on the back of the car, freeing up the equivalent of an entire trunk for other things (dogs/kids/diabetic cat and litter box). It makes traveling a much more pleasant experience. :)

This bolts together easily, and was well packaged and promtly delivered. The only problem I had was that it actaully doesn't fit the smaller slot hitch size.
I have a grinder so I was able to take off a little metal and make it work, but most folks don't want that sort of hassle.

I bought this for use on our annual ski trip for extra storage on the way and attach a tote to hold ski boots and accessories while there.
This unit wiggles a little in the receiver so I wrapped some electrical tape around the hitch so it fits a little better. I also felt like the hardware that holds this unit together is a little lacking. Seems like it might rattle loose, etc. I applied some LocTite to the bolts to help prevent this. However, I'm planning to weld this unit together to make it last forever.

50"x20" Heavy Duty 2" Hitch Mounted Cargo Basket Luggage Carrier Hauler RV SUV Review

50x20 Heavy Duty 2 Hitch Mounted Cargo Basket Luggage Carrier Hauler RV SUV

Easy to assemble as long as you leave all of the hardware loose until it is assembled. I took the rack on a 5000 mile cross country trip over varied terrain including rough back roads. I even scraped it climbing out of a steep rutted area. It still looks like new. With a Rola cargo bag it doubled my load capacity. It was the perfect size for a 2007 Honda CR-V. The offset raised it above the muffler. It was far enough back that I was able to open the back gate without removing anything. When the bag was totally full someone would pull the bag back when we opened and closed the gate. I bought a locking, rattle free hitch pin. It kept everything sturdy and rattle free.

Masterbuilt H2A HITCH-HAUL Lite Cargo Carrier Review

Masterbuilt H2A HITCH-HAUL Lite Cargo Carrier
Average Reviews:

I decided to pay a little more for this lighter-weight aluminum carrier. I wanted a unit that I could easily install on my SUV by myself. This unit fits the bill quite nicely. It's 28 pounds light and very well made. It is also easy to assemble. The primary strength members are steel but the frame and mesh floor are aluminum. It has the same 500 lb. carrying capacity as the all-steel units.
I should relate also that when the unit arrived, it was missing a part. I contacted Masterbuilt and their customer support was terrific. The part was on its way the next morning. All-in-all, I am very happy with this unit and expect to use it for many years.

Highland 1042000 Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Review

Highland 1042000 Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This carrier looks slightly different to what is pictured. I'll try to post a picture later. It amazon picture shows two braces on the bottom of the frame. Even the box that the carrier arrived in shows the same picture. Apparently Highland has improved the design. They have added more support (from what I can tell) to the frame pieces on each end of the main support bar and eliminated the pictured braces. It seems to be a much better design.
The carrier assembles easily. I did snap off one bolt, but it was easily replaced. It seems to be very sturdy. Obviously, at the center it's very strong. I put my 200 plus pounds on it there and it doesn't budge. I would not stand on either end though. If you're going to load it to it's 500 pound max, weight will need to be evenly distributed. I think it will work well for my planned use. I bought it for tailgating and plan to load a small Honda generator and coolers.
Overall, I'm very impressed and happy with this carrier.

Valley 90590 Deluxe Hitch Mount Cargo Basket Review

Valley 90590 Deluxe Hitch Mount Cargo Basket

I own a Jeep Wrangler. If you know anything about Wranglers, you would know that the trunk in a wrangler is just big enough to hold a pair of socks...if you fold them carefully.
I bought the Valley Deluxe Carrier about 9 camping trips ago and I couldn't be happier! The unit works like a charm. Unlike the last hitch carrier I had, this one has a nice "rise" feature built into it. This is very handy when going up or down steep driveways and roads. I also found that the "rise" feature helps keep your stuff cleaner in rainy/muddy conditions because it puts your items higher off of the ground and away from the tires. I have loaded it to the max and it works flawlessly.
The tall sides are a nice feature that set this unit apart from those of lesser quality.
If you buy this (or any brand) of carrier, be sure to get a nice set of 3 or 4 ratcheting straps to hold your gear in place. Ratcheting straps also hold my kids in place very well as I found that they always seemed to be able to wiggle out of the bungee cords :).
