The Other Side of Everest: Climbing the North Face Through the Killer Storm Review

The Other Side of Everest: Climbing the North Face Through the Killer Storm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a bit hesitant to read The Other Side of Everest; it was beginning to seem to me that there wasn't a person anywhere near the mountain during 1996 that *hadn't* written a book. I figured this one would be a rehashing of the story we all know so well, from Into Thin Air and other books. How wrong I was. The Other Side of Everest offers a different perspective of the 1996 tragedies, but it's well told - *and* the book offers a great deal more.
Dickinson, in my opinion, did a better job than Krakauer at writing for the non-climbing audience, perhaps because he isn't really a climber at all. He doesn't use much jargon, and when he does - "the Death Zone," for example, which was the UK title of this book - he defines his terms. He also answers a lot of the questions non-mountaineers and armchair adventurers have about climbing; for once and for all, he explains why climbers dread calls of nature above 8,000 meters, as just one example.
Dickinson writes very differently than most climbers, especially the ones who have written about Everest 1996. His narrative retains the tension and, in some places, tragedy that are common to the best expedition accounts, but he also uses humor in places where it's appropriate. I found myself laughing out loud in several places. The Other Side of Everest is also different in that it doesn't have the haunted, agonizing tone that Into Thin Air did, perhaps because Dickinson was farther from the tragedies, relatively speaking, or perhaps just because he waited longer than Krakauer did to write about it. Also, The Other Side is an account of a successful, "easy" Everest climb, not a disaster, which changes the perspective and the tone a lot from the other books about the 1996 season.
In additional to the Everest-disaster-season story, The Other Side has another story to tell: how a non-climber got to the top of the world. Dickinson's case of summit fever drives him to the top of a mountain he didn't really expect to climb - after all, he's clumsy even at sea level - and so his book is a good look at the way normal people with little mountaineering experience (i.e., commercial expedition members) handle high-altitude climbs - and, to the extent that it can be explained at all, why.
This book was written by a film director, so perhaps it isn't a surprise that the pictures are so good, but it's lovely anyway. I'm also pleased that the publishers sprung for two different insets of color photos, at least in the hardcover edition; some of them are truly breathtaking.
In short, The Other Side of Everest is well worth reading for all lovers of adventure travel and climbing writing; even those who feel they've read Everest to death should enjoy this one. The book is a welcome addition to climbing literature, and would give pleasure on almost anyone's bookshelf.

RVers: How Do They Live Like That? Review

RVers: How Do They Live Like That

This is an unusual RV lifestyle book. It's not so much how-to, as it is an interesting and useful look at family ties, relationships, and the emotional changes and challenges involved in making a unique lifestyle choice. This really would be useful for RV owners considering full time (to get a reality check on their expectations), for people who love them and don't quite understand the choice, or for people facing the challenges of aging gracefully in any realm. It's even just an interesting book for people who like to hear about different cultures. The authors were professional counselers, put in some serious time interviewing lots of people, and bring that sophisticated insight to their writing and research.

I'm getting ready to retire. I wanted a listing of those out of the way places that I always had to pass up on my travels. They ain't in this book!
I was sorely disappointed in what I found here. They list a lot of campgrounds but they only review about 1 in 10 or 1 in 15. I wanted listings of campgrounds in West Texas. While the maps gave their designation for an RV park...not one of them was reviewed. No names, contact numbers or anything that would really help.
On the other hand, if you want to stay in a state park or BLM site, this books for you. It really does cover those in great detail. In the few private parks they reviewed, the work again was detailed.
The advertisement for this book did not elaborate on what was there...it just led you to believe it was a complete listing...which it was not.
If you are looking for a more thorough listing, Trailer Life or Woodalls provides much more comprehensive cover of ALL the campgrounds they list private or not.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London Review

Julie's Gift: Memories of London
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just read 'Julie's Gift' written by Kevin Kirsch, a husband who is not a feelings sharer, but through this novella lets us all know (including his wife) that he does have deep feelings. It is a nice light read that may make you look at your unromantic partner a bit differently since it reminds you that just because feelings are not shared doesn't mean they're not felt. The plot is not riveting and you won't find a car chase, but that's the best part. It revolves around a couple's anniversary trip to London, England. The husband admits his idea of a trip is from the couch to the fridge, but goes out of love for his wife. It unfolds from there. The coolest thing about this book is that it was penned in secret by the husband and presented to her as a Valentine's surprise! Julie's Gift has great sample itineraries (how they actually spent their days in London) as well as the author's Top Ten London Travel Tips for the Guys (funny and useful list).
Not everyone is romantic or able to share feelings aloud, and many of those people are men. This book is a thoughtful and dare I say passionate shout to his wife to tell her that even when he doesn't say so, he is happy and lucky to be with her.

I'm a native New Yorker, born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, so the NYC subway system means a great deal to me. I'm also a railfan, so my interests in the inner workings of the IND, BMT, and IRT run very deep as well. That's why I can say that Evolution of New York City Subways truly is a subway fan's delight. Gene Sansone has written an incredibly fact-filled, engaging chronicle of the rolling stock of the MTA and its predecessors, as only an insider can. The comprehensive text is accompanied by excellent interior and exterior photos, plus detailed diagrams and specifications. I predict that this book will soon become the reference standard on this subject. I sincerely urge all subway fans to get a copy immediately: they won't be able to put it down!

Discover America Diaries. 50 States, 50 States of Mind. Volume 1: East Coast to West Coast. New England, New York, and the Great Northern States

Back in the 1980s, there was an Albert Brooks movie about a couple of Yuppies who ditched the high-paced rat race, cashed in their nest egg, bought an RV and decided to discover America and themselves through a year-long road trip. They got as far as Las Vegas where the wife gambled away all their money. Later on, they ended up in some boring town with low-grade jobs. Nobody liked the ending.
A much happier ending has befallen Priscilla Rhodes and her husband Ken. Having quit their jobs in 1998 they bought a red truck and an attached trailer and set out for a few years of nomadic existence to discover the country. The result was a website devoted to postcards from the road called www.postcardsfrom.com which later led to this book. The couple actually sent e-mail postcards to people on their subscription list. The postcards became popular, as did the thumbnail sketches of the places they visited. After USA Today and The Christian Science Monitor lauded the website, their subscription base skyrocketed. Eventually this book evolved from their first trip: one that covered the northern route.

The diaries switch back and forth between personal accounts of their life on the road (and before), musings about society and deft descriptions of the monuments, towns, events and byways they encounter. Luckily for the reader, most of the personal accounts are very funny, and the descriptions are right on the money. Priscilla writes the diaries and the postcards while Ken takes the photographs and designs and emails the cards.
It seems Priscilla has the perfect husband. Not only can he handle a truck with a trailer weaving behind it (I personally avoid those things like the plague when I see them on the highway) he can also photograph, create a website, do professional book layout and fashion a very handsome book without benefit of high-price book designers.
So whether they are shivering in the cold, waiting for the sun to rise on Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, baking in the heat when caught in Chicago traffic in their truck (which apparently is not air-conditioned) or climbing over buffalo dung in the Badlands, you will enjoy their journey and learn a lot about America, trailer parks, state capitols and various monuments. A very enjoyable read.

If you ever dreamed quitting your job and driving off to explore America's highways and back roads then read this diary first. On Columbus Day 1997, Priscilla and Ken Rhodes quit their jobs, bought a 30-foot RV (even though neither one knew the first thing about RVing), and drove off to discover America. Their plan was to see 50 states in 50 weeks, spending a week in each state, and returning to their jobs in a year. Three years later they returned home, broke but not broken. This is Priscilla's diary of that road trip, a madcap adventure that is both exciting and heartbreaking as she experiences the exhilarating heights and devastating depths of life on the road. Follow Priscilla and Ken on their three-year journey across the United States and see what they discover about America and about themselves. In Volume 1: NEW ENGLAND, NEW YORK AND THE GREAT NORTHERN STATES Priscilla and Ken visit Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, the "State of Anxiety," New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Washington, and Oregon.

We are fulltime RVer's-which means we live in the RV year round. I was using an old Next Exit and had this book recommended by another fulltime rv couple. The 2 major assets of this particular Interstate book are each interstate follows through the states and are in numerical order starting with I-4 ending with the city loop road I-710 and number 2-every few pages there is a spot inserted with enough room to write your own notes. No other books that I've used have that feature. OH and I forgot it's also spiral bound, makes page flipping a breeze.
I purchase this through Amazon which was the best price!

This book is the best. We have an RV and the ability to know ahead of time where you plan to get gas or take a rest break has been marvelous. Often times it is difficult to find a gas station that is laid out well enough to maneuver a large rig in. This solves that problem most of the time. I really like that the interstates are listed from start to finish across all states rather than state by state, interstate by interstate. No flipping pages whenever you cross a state line. In summary, terrific book!!!

This fishing guide is good. It provides a lot of details needed to fish fresh and saltwater. No guidebook can cover every body of water in equally great detail. But Rudnick covers the basics well for just about all the waters I fish.
I use the book frequently to plan trips. It's been accurate so far. Some of the best ideas in my book, "How to catch salmon, sturgeon, lingcod, rockfish, & halibut along the pacific coast," came from Terry's contributions. I recommend his book.

In the Sun's House: My Year Teaching on the Navajo Reservation Review

In the Sun's House: My Year Teaching on the Navajo Reservation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kurt Caswell takes a job teaching language arts to middle school students on a Navajo reservation at the Borrego Pass School. The New Mexico high country is filled with natural beauty but the lives of poor people in tiny villages seem ugly to Caswell. His students have few options; nothing encourages them to aspire to a life beyond the reservation. Borrego kids insult other Navajos as bilagáanas (whites) if their English is better than their Navajo and particularly if they have spent time in cities.
"This was a violent world, one that stole energy and hope from its people, beat them down, and then kept them down, possibly forever. There must have been something else here too, something soft and caring, something safe and loving, something good that held this community together. If so, I could not, as yet, see it.... But why, I had to ask, did I so readily witness the cruel and violent face of Borrego, and nothing of the other side? Why would a community like this one show me, a stranger, this dark part of itself, and hide its best qualities?"
Caswell makes small inroads into the better qualities -- Renee, a bright, hard working student takes pleasure in his praise for an essay and adopts some of his suggestions for improvements. Earlier she had told him "I hate you." The words hurt so much that Caswell "knew then that I didn't want to teach at all."
Caswell's books is filled with similar hard hitting reflections on his life with his students, with his friend Mary, and with another teacher. He brings a clear, compelling prose to these reflections, and a deep honesty, very impressive in an author only 26 years old. He describes roads so bad that he is almost washed over the edge, a student taking aim at him with a shotgun, and throwing out his lesson plans in despair at teaching "Romeo and Juliet" to his charges.
Some of the best passages describe his enjoyment of the wonderful scenery:
"Such soft asylum is the sun, and that day in late October, that cool, happy day in fall, I needed sanctuary like I needed nothing else, sanctuary from my classroom, from my trailer home, from Borrego Pass School. I had just seen Caleb Benally ride away in a police car after he threatened somebody with a knife at lunch. He likely always carried that knife in his pocket, but somehow on that day, he'd decided the situation demanded he use it. He was a scary kid, and he didn't like me at all. I wondered how long it would be before he decided to use that knife against me."
Caswell is a traveller at heart; he leaves his job after the first year and moves on to other adventures, well described on his travel log (link in first Comment). His list of favorite travel books is inspiring:
(in order of adoration)
The Snow Leopard | Peter Matthiessen
Arctic Dreams | Barry Lopez
Arabian Sands | Wilfred Thesiger
The Long Walk| Slavomir Rawicz
The Songlines | Bruce Chatwin
West with the Night | Beryl Markham
The Lost World of the Kalahari |
Laurens van der Post
Desert Solitaire | Edward Abbey
The Narrow Road to the Deep North |
Basho
In Trouble Again | Redmond O'Hanlon
If Caswell continues to write so well about his travels, he will join that exalted company on my own list.
Robert C. Ross 2010

In the year he spent teaching at Borrego Pass, a remote Navajo community in northwest New Mexico, Kurt Caswell found himself shunned as persona non grata. His cultural missteps, status as an interloper, and white skin earned him no respect in the classroom or the community-those on the reservation assumed he would come and go like so many teachers had before. But as Caswell attempts to bridge the gap between himself and those who surround him, he finds his calling as a teacher and develops a love for the rich landscape of New Mexico, and manages a hard-won truce between his failings and successes.

This is a good overall guide to the Alcan, with almost all the information you need on the vehicle, the roads, history, etc.
The author seems to be an avid fishermen, so this topic is well addressed.
He also devotes a huge chunk of the book to the various routes to Dawson Creek. You don't buy this book for a guide to driving from the myriad locations in the US to Dawson Creek. That's a different topic.
Little or no attention was given to hiking, mountain biking, or winter travel.
The major shortcoming was its lack of maps. A travel guide without good maps is, well, unacceptable.

Caravan & Camping Europe 2010 (Aa Caravan and Camping Europe) Review

Caravan and Camping Europe 2010 (Aa Caravan and Camping Europe)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We used this book to find motorhome camping sites in July 2009. The book contains loads of sites, but there are many, many more not listed. We travelled with 5 books (most borrowed) and found this book to be one of the more complete ones. No single book or website lists all the thousands of camping sites in Europe.
The book can be a bit cumbersome to use but nearly all camping books are like this. To find a site near a selected location, look at the whole county map at the rear of the book, locate the town/vicinity (only main town names are printed), find the camp site name, and go to an index to find the page number for the listing. Or you can go straight to the index if you know the name of the site. Or go to the main listings which are arranged by region and town; keep in mind many camp sites may not be listed under the town name you'd expect if they are on the town outskirts. Decriptions of camp sites are short but there are e-mail addresses and URLs for doing advance planning/bookings. (In contrast, the book European Camping by Mike & Terry Church gives much more detail for site descriptions and includes maps for on how to get there, but lists only a small number of sites near the largest towns. The booklet provided by Camping Card International when you buy a camping carnet card gives only sites offering discounts-- presents a country map, an address, and website URL). But most camp sites have municipal signs posted so the lack of maps/directions in Camping & Caravaning Europe was usually not a major problem.
This is good book to have along on your trip. We sure to also bring road maps. A GPS is very helpful, though do not rely soley on it-- look at printed maps too! Europe is on a major road constructioon binge with new highways constructed so the directions provided by some campsites are now invalid, plus rural locations are not always mapped by the GPS.
