Dart is a wonderful story told from the perspective of a racing dog and his companion chase rabbit, but in a third-person narrative. It follows (the racing dog) Dart's journey from racing greatness through what happens after a dog can race no more. It is a gripping tale with many twists and turns to keep the reader guessing as to what is coming next. The author's description of the characters and their emotions as well as their surrounding environment and historical context, really immerse the reader in the story and compel them to care about these characters and their outcome.
While this is intended as a children's book I found it very entertaining myself and I feel that much like the animated feature films of the day it is written to entertain and inform on many levels. The interactions of the animal society and how it relates to human society reminded me of such classics as George Orwell's Animal Farm and E.B. White's Charlotte's web, while still being a completely original work in and of itself.
While as with any "talking animal" story and most works of fiction some suspension of disbelief is required, you will still find yourself caught up in the drama and rooting for the characters. All in all a very satisfying read.
