The Complete Idiot's Guide to Restoring Collector Cars Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Restoring Collector Cars
Average Reviews:

If you already know a lot about Pitman arms, rag joints, pinion gears, and harmonic balancers, then this book is probably not for you. After all, the word, "idiot," is in the title. As the new owner of a collector car who hasn't much of a clue where to start, I found it to be perfectly suited to my needs and knowledge level. The information is presented in such a way as to apply to a wide range of vehicle types, which I especially liked, since my specific vehicle interests don't correspond at all with the author's. Most importantly, the author is a good writer and the book is enjoyable to read, cover to cover. (There are a few typos, which always surprises me.) Overall, a good value and a great introduction to the topic for beginners.

Film Festival Secrets: A Handbook For Independent Filmmakers Review

Film Festival Secrets: A Handbook For Independent Filmmakers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently finished reading film festival secrets. I appreciate much of the advice found therein, but it can be exceedingly basic at times. The book is divided into the following categories:
1. Before You Submit
2. When You Submit
3. While You Wait
4. When You Get The Call
5. The Pre-Festival Push
6. At the Festival
7. Aftermath
Holland's enthusiasm is apparent, and he gives solid advice about Withoutabox, organization, and promotion as well as an amusing list of Filmmaking cliches. There is a reiteration that you need goals going into festivals, and a review of the basic marketing materials used for them. There are also good checklists to end each section.
That said the book feels very much geared to the neophyte filmmaker setting out on his very first festival run. A lot of common sense and little new information for twenty five dollars. Much is rehashed here, although in a convenient form all in one place.
Some books that I would recommend are Chris Gore's Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, Friends Fans and Followers by Scott Kirsner, The New Rules of Marketing and PR by David Meerman Scott.
If you are very new, this is for you, but I find it a little too expensive for what is offered.

RV Repair and Maintenance Manual: Updated and Expanded (RV Repair & Maintenance Manual) Review

RV Repair and Maintenance Manual: Updated and Expanded (RV Repair and Maintenance Manual)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK - I haven't read this book front to back. It is, after all, a reference book. However, I have skimmed each of the sections and read several in detail, particularly those dealing with 12 Vdc and plumbing. I didn't pay so much attention to those parts dealing with motorhomes because I don't have one.
However, whether you own a Class A motorhome or an humble single-axle travel trailer (like I have), this book is *THE* guide to maintenance and repair. Example: I have an n-th hand 1975 Vanguard T13 travel trailer. The electrical system is in horrible shape, to express it charitably. This book has been my constant companion and guide as I refurbished and repaired the wiring, charging system, distribution boxes and so forth. Without doubt it has paid for itself twice or even three times over.
The book is broken down into self-contained sections - so you don't have to read the electrical section if the topic of the day is plumbing. Each section provides definitions for any special terms used, discusses the requirements and nature of the system in general terms, then gets into more detail. Each section has lots of clear line illustrations and high-quality black and white photographs.
The only reason I give this book only 4 stars is that in some respects it is a little intimidating for a novice RV owner. Once you get into it, it is very clear, but the initial impression is a little overwhelming, simply by the sheer size of the book and the volume of information presented. The only way to address this would be to produce multiple books - which might not be such a bad idea.

RV Electrical Systems: A Basic Guide to Troubleshooting, Repairing and Improvement

This book descibes electricity, batteries, control circuits et al in the right level of detail to allow the person with basic hand eye coordination to troubleshoot if not fix almost any electrical problem the RV'er might encounter. Many simple diagrams to aid in the understanding of concepts and tracing of problems. The book does assume the reader will have a knowledge of basic hand tools, the skill to use them and an ability to convert the porvided knowledge into action. One must be able to look at the drawings in the book and locate the item on the RV. Highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what makes the electrical system tick in their RV.

The RVer's Bible: Everything You Need to Know About Choosing, Using, & Enjoying Your RV Review

This book really helped me get an RV that made sense for me; I think that's the best part of the book--the details on how to choose an RV and how to learn to drive one. It's the only book that really shows you how to walk through a used RV to get one in good condition. I enjoyed all the personal notes about things that work and things that don't when you're RVing. You'll get a lot out of it.

Trailer life's RV repair & maintenance manual Review

Trailer life's RV repair and maintenance manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is THE must-have reference book for anyone owning or even shopping around for an older "starter RV" (say pre-1985), so that you'll at least have some clue what you're looking at and how to use it all properly once it's all yours.
It gives a superb overall view of the whole "home" part of the motor home, detailed tips and instructions on how to maintain these systems and, just as importantly, what to leave to the specialists. Also describes other topics of special mechanical interest to RVers such as electric and other types of trailer brake systems, hitches and so forth.
Considering the fact that a nice used copy can often be had here on Amazon for less than the price of a happy meal, it'd be kinda silly not to check it out if you are or are planning to push or pull an older rolling flophouse down the highway. And for a swell companion volume on the overall 'mechanics' of the chassis of pre-'85 rigs, such as engine, drivetrain and whatnot, giving lots of specific info on how to make it all run as well as can be, find yourself a copy of 'Trailer Life's Rx for Rv Performance and Mileage' [...]
Happy camping!
Bilgey

The Complete Trailer Handbook (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

The Complete Trailer Handbook (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What did you discover in researching this book that readers will be excited to learn?
The biggest surprise in writing this book was discovering how basic trailers are. They all still seem to use ladder frames and a very basic braking system. Very little has changed in the world of trailers over the last few decades. When disc brakes and torsion bar suspensions are considered innovative you get the picture.
On the other hand trailers work. They seldom break down and most trailer stores can repair any problems easily and quickly. Try saying that about your new 7-series BMW. It's only when you look at the large RV units that you really encounter problems. Then most of the problems seem to be with the plumbing or HVAC systems; not the trailer itself.
What differentiates this book from any other book on this subject?
This is the most complete trailer book on the market. No other book covers the subject as completely as this book does. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but I just got obsessed with the whole world of trailers.
What is your personal involvement with the subject?
Over the years I've owned far too many bad trailers. One of my life goals on my Bucket List is to own a really nice trailer. My fate in life is to own used trailers that need work. Some people just go down to the local trailer store and write a check. I'll probably never do that.
Besides not having the necessary balance in my checking account I just like messing around with trailers too much. It's a sickness and there's no known cure. If you give most people $50,000 to buy a really nice trailer they would probably do that. If I had $50,000 to spend on a trailer I would probably buy 10 trailers that needed a bunch of work. It's just the way my genetic code works.
What's your favorite part of the book?
I love tires. That means I love trailer tires. It also means I'm weird. I just can't help it. I have spent a lifetime dealing with tires and I actually understand how they work. When you look at old used trailers (which I do on a regular basis) it's shocking how many people are running passenger car tires on their trailer. That's just not a real good ideas folks. Get the real deal. You'll be much safer with real trailer tires on your trailer.
