Film Composers in America: A Filmography, 1911-1970 Review

Film Composers in America: A Filmography, 1911-1970
Average Reviews:

What a wealth of information! If you love lists, you'll love this book, as it comprehensively details the composers (and orchestrators) who wrote the background scores, often anonymously, in the golden age of American motion pictures. It ends at 1970, which may seem arbitrary, but you can't complain about the author's resourcefulness in researching the extant archives of the major Hollywood studios. Invaluable for libraries and fact-collectors who want to know "who really wrote that score".

Film Composers in America is a landmark in the history of film. Here, renowned film scholar Clifford McCarty has attempted to identify every known composer who wrote background musical scores for films in the United States between 1911 and 1970. With information on roughly 20,000 films, the book is an essential tool for serious students of film and a treasure trove for film fans. It spans all types of American films, from features, shorts, cartoons, and documentaries to nontheatrical works, avant-garde films, and even trailers. Meticulously researched over 45 years, the book documents the work of more than 1,500 composers, from Robert Abramson to Josiah Zuro, including the first to score an American film, Walter C. Simon. It includes not only Hollywood professionals but also many composers of concert music--as well as popular music and other genres--whose cinematic work has never before been fully catalogued. The book also features an index that lets readers quickly find the composer for any American film through 1970. To recover this history, much of which was lost or never recorded, McCarty corresponded with or interviewed hundreds of composers, arrangers, orchestrators, musical directors, and music librarians. He also conducted extensive research in the archives of the seven largest film studios--Columbia, MGM, Paramount, RKO, 20th Century-Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros.--and wherever possible, he based his findings on the most reliable evidence, that of the manuscript scores and cue sheets (as opposed to less accurate screen credits). The result is the definitive guide to the composers and musical scores for the first 60 years of American film.

Filmmaking For Dummies Review

Filmmaking For Dummies

I read this book, as well as others, because I'm taking a stab at filming a screenplay with some other people. I have enjoyed some of the other dummies books, but I thought this one was off target. It is very high level. For example, in the first or second chapter, he goes over what the job roles are for the production assistant, and ten other job titles you might see at the end of a Hollywood movie, and I'm thinking to myself, am I really going to have a full-time grip on my movie? I was hoping this book would focus on the nuts and bolts of making a small-budget / zero-budget film, but it talked about numbers that apply to people who aren't going to be reading a dummies book. On the whole, I thought it was a real surface look at independent filmmaking, and would be appropriate for someone who wanted to learn about it, but not do it. You would be better off buying IFILM Filmmakers Handbook and some individual books on lighting and sound if you really want information about how to make your own film. A lot of the information in this book can be found on the web, also.

It's too bad a book doesn't get a star for every thousand dollars the reader might save by reading it because if this were the case "Your Low-Tax Dream House" would have at least 30 or 40 stars. There are lots of books about how to save money when you are building a house, but this is the first one I've ever read that shows you how you can maximize your comfort while insuring that you don't pay an unnecessary fortune in taxes during the life of your home. Every building contractor should read this book as a strategy for basic survival, but if you are building your own home independently, then you can't afford not to read it.

Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind Review

Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having heard Dr. Miller speak about imprinting a foal, I've been a big fan of his work. He's done a lot in the field of horsemanship, helping to educate horse owners. His work is aimed at the amateur horse owner, someone who might not have a background in horses, or who only has one or two in their care. With that said, do I agree with everything he says? No, I do not. However, I did find this book to be a thought provoking collection of essays.
The "ancient secrets" to which Dr. Miller refers is simply the natural way in which a horse is hardwired. Those who work around horses know that they are prey creatures. Their instincts tell them to flee from danger, and barring that, fight to get free. Therefore, many of things that owners and trainers do to them run counter to that instinct. Dr. Miller's book helps the owner and/or trainer to understand a bit more the details in a horse's mind, and understand why a horse may be performing a certain action.
From the title of this book it sounds like it might be the "be-all-end-all" to horsemanship tomes. Certainly "Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind" sounds weighty and important. I'm not saying this book isn't important, but the book cannot, especially in such a slim volume, be the complete handbook to getting inside a horse's psyche. No, this is a title to read, to ponder, and to learn from, and then use as a way to branch out into other books on equine psychology.
With that said, however, I do feel that this book is a worthwhile addition to any horseman's library, and certainly should be on the "must read" list of any serious horse owner.

Successful horsepeople know the secrets of the horse's mind. All horses share 10 common character traits that affect every move they make. These traits are embedded deep within the horse's DNA and are shared by every horse. Dr. Miller explains how to predict what your horse will do, get the proper response and fix unwanted behavior. He shows how you can unknowingly teach your horse how to misbehave.

Scale Model Collectible Cars: with Selective Catalogue Histories for Matchbox, Corgi and Schuco
Average Reviews:

I was born in 1966 and enjoy these small die-cast cars. I liked to collect "Matchbox" cars formerly made by Lesney Toys of England and I also like the more upscale products offered by "Corgi Toys." This book by Marc Nonnenkamp has a handy detailed listing of the Matchbox product line from 1948 through 1992 inclusive. It also has examples of Matchbox from both the Tyco Toys and the current Mattel years. Personally I am much more interested in the Lesney (1948 to 1982) Matchbox International years (from 1983 to 1992). My favorites are the Matchbox "King Size" and Matchbox "Models of Yesteryear" lines, both included in this book. The illustrations in this book all come from "Corgi Toys" because the author's work is endorsed by Hornby Hobbies - the current owner of the Corgi brand name. The Amazon Kindle e-book edition features working links to and from both chapters and illustrations as well as some Internet links. Nonnenkamp has favorable recommendations for reputable toy retailers such as Asheville Diecast of Asheville, North Carolina and 3000toys of Joplin, Missouri (yes, that's the Joplin hit by the recent tornado). Asheville Diecast has endorsed this book on their site at [....] and 3000toys has endorsed this book on their Facebook page with more than 1,300 members. Barnes & Noble at [....] features an endorsement of this book by Susan Pownall, the editor of the Corgi Club magazine from England with more than 4,000 members worldwide. I strongly endorse this book and all others by the author Marc Nonnenkamp.

Movin' on: Living and Traveling Full-Time in a Recreational Vehicle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This second book by Ron and Barb Hofmeister describes everything one needs to know to make an intelligent decision about the possibility of living full-time in a recreational vehicle. Ron and Barb draw on their 9+ years of full-time RVing to share things they have learned through experience.
One of the great things about the book is that they do not try to provide in-depth information in areas that are obviously a matter of opinoin. They do not tell you what kind of vehicle you should own and how you should pack it.
They do tell you the joys and hardships of a full-time lifestyle. They share their own costs to show what one can expect to pay to enjoy this lifestyle. And they offer glimpses of what the lifestyle has to offer.
This is a "must read" for anyone considering a full-time lifestyle in a recreational vehicle.

Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal: A Swift, Effective Method for Permanently Shaping a Horse's Lifetime Behavior
Average Reviews:

I bought this book by Robert M. Miller with my very first
miniature horse foal, and it WORKS!!!!
I imprint trained him at birth and some the next day and
everything I did, helped that horse just like he said it would.
His personality is beautiful, he learned the desired responses
well and I know its because of the imprint training. It does not
take much time or effort on your part. I bought a foal that was
not imprint trained and the difference between the two horses
later on is UNBELIEVEABLE. The imprint trained horse is
friendly, obedient, and unafraid of anything ,thanks to this
book. TO me it was well worth the money I paid for it.I expect
2 more foals this year and already have my book ready to
do everything he suggests, I know it will make my life easier
when that little foal becomes a weanling thru full-grown.
For me, it was especially helpful because of my inexperience
with horses but this book would work just as well with the
experienced. It does shape the horses behaviors for LIFE.

IMPRINT TRAINING OF THE NEWBORN FOAL offers an easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach to handling and training newborn foals, as well as numerous techniques and exercises that aid the foal in halter training and later in performing riding maneuvers. Imprinting can be defined as a learning process occurring soon after birth in which a behavior pattern is established. The newborn foal is imprinted to follow and bond with whatever large object looms above it at the time of birth.Dr. Miller's methods lay the foundation for teaching a horse most of what it will need to know to serve as a useful animal for the rest of its life. Early training can, in an amazingly brief period of time, assure an ideal relationship between horse and human, with the horse bonded and submissive to the human. In addition, the horse will be desensitized to the everyday frightening stimuli that typically elicit a flight reaction in the young horse, and which account for the frequent injuries that afflict horses and the people who work with them. The book includes nineteen chapters beginning with initial imprinting training, then following with subsequent sessions, halter training, performance basics, response reinforcement, problem prevention, and sections on racehorses, mules, and brood mares.

Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction Fantasy Horror Review

Guide To Writing and Publishing Science Fiction Fantasy Horror
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now here is a different sort of writing guide! I loved it! First, it zeroes in specifically on the genres I'd like to write about, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror, rather than just being for anyone who wants to write just anything.
Secondly, it does not treat the would-be writer of such genres as a "newbie." This thoughtful and well organized guide assumes you already have a grasp of these basic things. Rather, the Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror by Rob Shelsky gave me exactly what I needed.
It dwells specifically on how to write in the above three speculative genres. As the Guide says, they all have very much in common, and so those common elements allow the writer to write any of the three (using this book as a guide, of course). It also delineates the differences in each genre, the added elements required for horror versus fantasy, versus science fiction, for instance. The book gives five easy steps to getting published and then each chapter goes into depth on how to do all these things. For example, I had no idea that the first two lines of a book were really so critical, could make or break somebody wanting to buy it! Neither did I realize what ingredient is absolutely essential to horror (read the book to find that one out). Nor did I realize the common pitfalls of writing fantasy, the mistakes many (even accomplished authors)make, if they don't do some research and watch out for certain things!
What's more, the Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror details such things as how to promote cheaply as an independent author (free, do-it-yourself book trailers, for example), how to respond to publishers, how to create settings for stories, develop characters, develop plots, etc. Just check out the table of contents of this book. It shows you just how in-depth the contents are with regard to writing in these three speculative genres.
A Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror is just chock full of great advice, straightforward information, and a cut-to-the-chase approach to not only writing in these genres, but getting published in them, as well. I give Rob Shelsky's Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror the full five stars, because it certainly has helped me to get moving in my writing. My recommendation? Buy the book! It really does help--a lot!

Matchbox Toys 1947 to 2003: Identification and Value Guide (Matchbox Toys: Identification and Value Guide)
Average Reviews:

I collect superfast Matchbox from 1969-present. This book only lists 1-75 (1/64th scale) Matchbox cars which is fine for my use. It is good becasue it lists all models in alphabetical order so you can cross-reference the number (1-75) of the model - most model numbers are not imprinted on late model cars so it is helpful in that respect. However, I found it lacking in the number of variations it listed. There is no consistent differentiation between wheel type (other than RW and SF), interior color, stickers/decals or other minor variations. This guide does not use the same numbering system as Charlie Mack's Encyclopedia (e.g. 14 A 3) making it difficult to have the references compliment each other. This guide does list more recent models where as Charlie Mack's guide is typically long overdue when a new edition comes out. But again, this one is not as complete regarding model variation so you may not know if you are collecting all the variations of a particular model you want in your collection. Another positive point of this book though is that not all pictures are of perfect cars -- the cars in the photos have a little play wear and is more reflective a practical collectors cars rather than some ideal collection most of us will never have. Lastly, in comparison to Charlie Mack's guide, I find it nice becasue most of this book does dedicate it's picture space to the 1-75 models. One of the dissappointments I have found with Mr. Mack's guide is that it lists a lot of subtle variation (i.e. light blue, mid blue and dark blue Soopa Coopa) but does not show pictures on how to tell the difference (neither does this one -- it doesn't even try to differentiate). Also, much of the picture space in Mr. Mack's guide is with models that no one I know really collects (i.e. NOT 1-75 series, super kings and models of yesteryear). I'm still not sure where 1/2 of the pics in Charlie Macks book come from (I've been collecting MB superfast for 20 years) -- perhaps thats why it is called an encyclopedia. Dana Johnson's book simplifies things but does not take it to the next level by any means.
Basically, I use Dana Johnson's book as a supplement to find model numbers so I can look up varaitions in late model cars in Charlie Mack's guide. I do think Mr. Macks guide can be too complete, in that it lists more model variations than most people can possibly collect. However, Dana Johnson's guide is too incomplete. I prefer Mr. Macks guide becasue it lists all known variations and allows me to decide which variations I think are significant to collect.

Our fourth edition promises to be the most user-friendly Matchbox collector's guide ever produced. While most publications on this subject are organized by model number or year of introduction, this book is arranged alphabetically by model name and description. Well over a thousand photographs are included in this latest edition, with multiple variations pictured of selected models, all incorporated into a cohesive guide to early Lesney models, the Matchbox basic (1 - 75) series, Two-Packs, Matchbox Collectibles, 2004 values. AUTHORBIO: Dana Johnson is an authority on collectible toy cars, including Matchbox, Hot Wheels, and many diecast models. His extensive personal collection includes mostly diecast models from all over the world. He has written several books: Matchbox Toys, 1947 to 2003, Toy Car Collector's Guide, and Collector's Guide to Diecast Toys & Scale Models. Fishing Wyoming Review

I have found this book to be a useful tool in exploring sites in Wyoming. I would suggest anyone traveling out to Wyoming read the introduction fully. You do need to prepare for the wide open spaces. The book is copyrighted in 1996 so it's 7 years old at this writing. Many things have changed in the past seven years. Roads have been closed by both BLM and the forest service. Trail signs have been changed or vandalized. If I was traveling a long distance to collect I would check with local rock shops to see if the desired sites were still open. If I could change anything it would be to include GPS coordinates in the driving directions. At least for the main turn-offs and the main site starting point.

This was an excellent beginning welding book. It covers the basics of most types of welding and does so in a reatively small number of pages. The book is clearly written and easily understanable to the novice. It was a little lacking in the following areas:1) specifics of metallurgy and nominclature of metal labling(ie what metals and alloys can be welded together and what are all of the alloy and wire/rod/ect classifications are used for/ect). I can hardly fault the author for this since he does give some information in this regard and the book is designed for the beginner and I would not expect that level of detail. 2)characteristics of good welds, there is a good explaination/diagram of penetration but they really need more photos of proper and improper welds showing some of the problems that are briefly mentioned by the author. With 2 extra chapters devoted to the subjects I mention this book would go from great to fantastic. Also, I would recommend that you buy it before you purchase any equipment since there is a good description of the pros and cons of each welding method and what features to look for when purchasing equipment for your specific application. You can then talk more intellegently to the welding supplier that you buy your equipment from and most likely end up with equipment that better suits your needs.
