Adams Trail-A-Bike Tandem, Black Review

The instructions are lacking and the seat post holes came out of the box bent a bit, but after a little fix-up work, my kids love this thing. After getting used to the new balance considerations, it's very stable and safe.

Trail Gator Review

Trail Gator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been wanting to get my family active into bike riding for some time. We live within three miles of shops, restaurants, entertainment, etc, yet we always drove. When my daughter was three, we spent a weekend at a local resort that had a lot of riding trails. I saw a gentleman hooking the trail gator up to his bike and stopped and chatted. He only had great things to say about it and I thought this was the perfect solution. When we returned home, I ordered the Trail Gator from Amazon. When it arrived and my husband installed it, it was pretty easy to attach. As other reviews state, you do need to adjust it a bit to the side, otherwise your child will lean quite a bit. We had to play with it for a while to find the perfect setting so our daughter would be sitting upright. However, now that we have had it for about 9 months, it is easy to attach and use. I ride my bike to work sometimes, and remove her bike from mine quickly. It also attaches just as fast. The biggest issue I have with the arrangement (not a problem specific to this product), is that she always seems to hit the brakes going uphill. We've decided that it is probably an adjustment issue, with her trying to scoot further up the seat as we go uphill. She is learning to pedal uphill, which helps a lot. Another problem, again, not specific to the product, is that my bike doesn't always like to shift down when I'm pulling her up the hill. I need to shift down before I get to the hill, otherwise I really struggle making it up in the higher gear. This attachment requires that you remove the training wheels, or purchase the flip-up type (due to going around corners). My daughter doesn't yet ride without training wheels, so we don't go anywhere and let her ride on her own, unattached. Overall, this product has been fantastic for my family. We ride our bikes at least once a weekend to get lunch, icecream, coffee or to the local greenway for a picnic. Sometimes we ride around the neighborhood just to ride. She loves to go on short trips on weeknights after work/daycare. This product has really enriched our lives and is hopfully setting up our daughter for a lifelong love of riding.

Burley Honey Bee Bike Trailer Review

Burley Honey Bee Bike Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research into these trailers before making my purchase. I read plenty of reviews, checked it out at a local REI, and I even watched a video right here on Amazon from someone who really hated it, before making my decision. All I can say is, for the money, there is not a better trailer out there. Sure there are better trailers, but they all cost two to three times what this trailer cost - and many of them are heavier.
I put it through it's paces on a short 8-mile ride - sans kids - and found it rolled well and was extremely stable. I then decided to tempt fate and put my 2 year old in it for a short 20-mile river bike path ride. Loaded it up with her favorite stuffed animal, a couple books, a cooler of food, and diaper bag and hit the road. The added weight was noticeable but tolerable, riding in the saddle posed no noticeable problem with maneuverability. When standing for a short climb, I did feel a bit of a tug that limited my ability to really hammer - due to the limited rotational flex of the hitch, but again, tolerable and I quickly learned how to manage the limitations. And to be quite honest, I had to remind myself that this was a ride as much for my daughter as for me, and the added weight was greatly adding to my workout and speeding up hills simply wasn't necessary.
As far as the front flap is concerned, I put it down for the first half of the ride as it had recently rained and I did have to ride through a few puddles and minor mud patches. Nearly all of the debris and water ended up on my back like it always does; nary a drop of water was on the window of the trailer or up under onto the mesh door. So for the second half of the ride, I decided to roll up the outer door and just go with the mesh door. This posed no problems at all, and in fact I could hear my daughter playing inside as I rode, which made me very happy. She absolutely loved it!
So, are there things I didn't like about it? Not really, but there are a few things I noticed that could probably be done a little better. First, the brake is very solid and effective, but in my opinion, contacts the tires at a bad angle and puts a fair amount of torque stress on the rims and axles. It is hard to say how continued prolonged use of the brake could effect the trueness of the wheels, so my recommendation would be to use the brake sparingly and absolutely do not store the trailer with the brake engaged.
Second, the product literature states that you and your passengers should all wear helmets, so I went out and bought a cute pink Bell helmet for my daughter. She got used to it well enough, but the "helmet pocket" (the loose mesh wall above the seat) is a bit too tight and does not allow her to comfortably put her head back. It will probably be less of a problem as she gets a little taller, as her head barely reaches the top of the seat. She actually preferred to ride sitting forward with her feet on the front bar, so it was no big deal.
Lastly, as the video reviewer points out, the outer window door does appear to be a half to maybe an inch too narrow, although it is fully functional and DOES cover from side-to-side, it takes only a small amount of care to align both sides so they wrap around the corners. The air gap is present, but again, I do not share the video reviewer's concern that debris or water would be thrown up into this gap in any great amount. If I were at all concerned, I would simply have a Velcro strip sewn on to the lower edge of the outer door and onto the corresponding area on the inner door to seal the bottom.
All-in-all, this really is a great trailer for the money. It's sturdy, light weight and stable, and my daughter loved it!
Edited 08/03/2010 - I changed the title to include the price I bought it for since it has gone up considerably since I wrote how great this trailer was for the price. The trailer is still great, but I would recommend searching around for the $249 price.

Burley SOLO Bicycle Trailer Review

Burley SOLO Bicycle Trailer

For one child this is an excellent trailer. The size (length/width/weight) is just about perfect and the materials are durable and simple to clean. It is extremely easy to hitch/unhitch to your bike. It's also fairly good as a stroller (although, of course you have to pay extra for the stroller "kit"). I especially like the way the side plastic is tinted to protect from the sun and the ease with which you can zip up the front to shield your child from the elements in case of sudden rain. It folds up and loads in the trunk of a car well, without needing to remove the wheels. It even has decent cargo capacity for grocery bags, toys, snacks, etc. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Weehoo iGo Bicycle Pedal Trailer Review

Weehoo iGo Bicycle Pedal Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How comfortable is this trailer? My five-year-old daughter, who isn't fully off of training wheels and never felt safe on a traditional trail-a-bike, went on a two-day 204 mile ride from Seattle to Portland on the Weehoo just weeks after we bought it. My two-year-old fits and has pedaled on it without any of the stability concerns my five-year-old had on traditional trail-a-bikes. The ride is amazingly stable, the thick mountain bike wheel and recumbent seat make bumps "fun", and the handlebar-free design leaves kids' hands free to grab drinks or to play on a mobile phone during breaks from pedaling.
There are lots of nice little features that show a lot of thought has been put into the design. There are two cupholders, and the second comes in handy for snacks or electronics. The built-in panniers are well designed and quite handy, though it takes some learning to get back there during a ride while balancing everything. Metal tubes cover the chain so that your child's legs or clothes won't get hurt or greasy from rubbing up against it. The pedals have straps to hold your kids' feet so that they can use the pull stroke in addition to the push stroke. The seatbelt is secure and easy to put on.
There are some downsides. At 35 pounds, the Weehoo is much heavier than most trail-a-bikes and even most adult bikes. Transporting it by car can be a challenge because it doesn't fit easily on many bicycle carriers, though it will fit on carriers that support bikes from the bottom (the Yakima hold-up works perfectly) and it can be crammed into most cars width-wise. It doesn't have multiple gears, though the single gear is fairly low so kids can help on the uphills when the rider in front most needs the help. The rear tires use schrader valves, whereas most road bikes use presta valves, so be sure to have a pump that supports the schrader valves (and a spare tube!). Fortunately, since it uses a thick mountain-bike tire, you're much more likely to get a flat in your road bike than your Weehoo.

Aosom Bicycle Bike Cargo Trailer-red and Black Review

Aosom Bicycle Bike Cargo Trailer-red and Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money this is a good little trailer. Just got back after loading it down pretty good at the grocery store and it did exactly what it was designed to do.

Assembly was easy and the only tool needed is supplied, but herein lie the first 2 faults i find in it. The wheels attach to the axle with spring clips, which u spread with supplied pliers to put on the axle. I have always hated these things and if you ever attempt this, be careful and gentle when spreading those clips as they are easily messed up if you over do it. Everything else goes together with simple pins, which is problem 2, security is a nightmare. There no real way you can lock this thing up and secure it without someone being able to steal all or part of it. If your in a crime area i suggest you drill a hole in it to attach a cable and lock, or fashion something up.
It almost got dark before I got home and herein lies another thing I think needs addressing. Each wheel has 2 reflectors which is great, but there is nothing on the back and since it's black, the addition of a reflector or two or a strip of reflective cloth is definitely advisable.
The way the corners are constructed, small items can and will fall out. Hopefully I'll find my padlock on the side of the road next trip.
Also, as mentioned by a reviewer of the middle sized trailer from Aosum, the sides definitely do have a minor problem if things shift up against them. It can bulge the fabric so that the wheels rub against it which causes drag or worse, will wear a hole in it fast. Some cheap plastic stiffeners would have been a good addition.
Finally, the last caveat. The tires arrived deflated, which is a minor annoyance, but printed on the sides it said max load xxx lbs at 300 psi. People DON'T BELEIVE THIS! I don't know what they are thinking but definitely do not inflate over 30 lbs. I guarantee it will blow up in your face if you try that.
After all those negatives, don't despair, it is very easy to pull, hardly noticeable when empty, tracks like a dream, and will hold more than most should ever need to haul. I don't know or intend to find out if it can haul the rated 180 lbs, I don't even weigh that and am not eager for a heart attack.
Also, I saved a little over $25 by ordering direct from Aosum as they had free shipping when I ordered it, and they did ship immediately Fed Ex ground. No problems there. If you have a need for something like this, go for it. Well worth the money. Just don't throw small items like your padlock loose in it, add a reflector or something to the back, and watch the sides or find a way to stiffen them. The lack of reflectors and stiffeners is the only reason i give it 4 stars instead of a full 5.
It's been a couple months now since I bought this thing so I thought I'd add a note. The trailer is holding up well, it's a little dirtier now, but other than that it looks and works the same. Bought one of those Super flash blinky lights and mounted it to the back of it and it was a perfect fit with no mods necessary.
6 Months now, still very happy, but, had a flat. I was appalled when I got into this thing and saw the shoddy quality of the inner tubes used in this. The rubber is thin and soft and feels like it crumbly. No wonder I had a flat. Get you some new inner tubes in advance from a cheap source. Not going to downgrade the rating or anything over such a mild issue, just a little heads up.

Avenir Cargo Bicycle Trailer Review

Avenir Cargo Bicycle Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this trailer, although not from Amazon. I have used to tow perhaps up to 40 pounds of various things including paper, cardboard, and bottles to my local recycling station, and groceries. It is light, and tows very well. Our area is fairly flat so I cannot speak to many significant hills. On the flat, however, it may make me start one gear lower when loaded than I would otherwise, but I cruise at basically my usual speed whether or not loaded. My trips are roughly 6 miles round trip. I like the fact that the hitch design is a simple clamp which means that I can use it on more than one bike without buying additional hitch hardware. The cloth sides are protected from contact and wear from the wheels by the bars around them. The top fits well. I do not use the flag, but I have attached a tailight. I should add that I ride for pleasure and errand running, but at age 68, am far from an athlete. There are two items about which one should be aware: First, if you ride a cruiser with a coaster brake on the left chain stay, the arm from the trailer may be too short. It is more likely than not, based on my two coaster brake bikes that the arm must attach in front of the brake arm. The front of the trailer may hit the back of the tire. A back fender could provide the same interference. On my mountain bike with derailers, there is no problem. Second, after riding a mile or so, check to see that the hitch is tight. Often I find that it needs some retightening.

Burley Nomad Bike Trailer Review

Burley Nomad Bike Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought a Nomad two years ago. Love it. I decided to ride my bike to destinations within a couple miles of my home that I normally drive to. Why waste gas and wear on the car when I can get off my lazy rear, ride the bike, and get some needed exercise in the process of doing errands I need to get done?
The Nomad made my bike practical. I can ride to the grocery store, wally world, pet store, etc, all of which are 1-5 miles from my house. If the weather is decent, I take the bike and Burley. I got a 25 pound bag of cat food home the other day, works perfectly. When the wife and I ride the bikes, we can throw a snack, drinks, extra sweatshirt, whatever in the Nomad just in case. Cell phone, wallet, etc can go in one of the little interior pockets. Super. The material is rugged. Of course, if you go offroad with it, over sharp rocks, etc, you can damage it I suppose. Not meant for that.
When the trailer is unloaded you barely notice it back there. It pulls super easy. With a 30-40 pound load, you have to work harder. Not rocket science. You slow down a little. No biggie. You can haul a lot of stuff in one of these guys. I leave the Nomad attached to my bike all the time now, just in case. You go for a ride, remember you need a gallon of milk, and just swing by the store. No problem.
I can't think of the last time I spent this amount of money on something I use this much, derive this much benefit from ( gets me exercising instead of being sedentary ), and enjoy as much.
I get a lot of positive feedback everywhere I go. Never fails to get a positive comment at the grocery store. One day a lady in a pickup truck drove beside me, rolled her window down, and was asking me about the trailer. Got a thumbs up from another driver one day. I think the trailer, in yellow, enhances my visibility and therefore safety on my bike. It is such an oddball thing to see on the road around here, it catches people'e eye, and that is never a bad thing on a bike.
One small flaw keeps it from 5 stars. The wheels are quick release style, and if you are not vigilant and check them for tightness a couple times a season, eventually they loosen and pop off. I rode a whole summer with no issues, then this year the first time I rode it, lost a wheel. I quickly found it, undamaged, and put it back on. The trailer frame got scratched a little. I really attribute this to my lack of attention to detail as much as design. I should have not been as complacent, and should have checked my equipment better and more often. Lesson learned. I wish the wheels were not quick release, though. Anyway, no biggie, I only mention this to alert you that if you buy one, check your wheels for tightness occasionally.
Order one today and get off your butt. You'll love it. I've since ordered my dad a Burley Flatbed. If you're within a 5 mile radius of where you do a lot of shopping, post office, et cetera, perfect. If you are like me, live in the suburbs, and are 1-3 miles from many things you need to do, this is the ultimate rig. You could tour on it longer distance, too.

Croozer 525 Double Child Bicycle Trailer (Red/Silver/Grey) Review

Croozer 525 Double Child Bicycle Trailer (Red/Silver/Grey)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After doing significant research on bike trailers for children, I opted for Croozer Designs brand because it got great reviews from a few bike enthusiasts. The 525 model has separate seats for each child, as in separate "hammocks" on each side for each seat - many other brands of double trailers have a single "hammock" with two seat harnesses, resulting in both children eventually leaning in towards the middle and each other. The 525 seats remain separate and flat and a very comfortable ride even for taller children.
Assembly of the trailer was relatively easy, although I put the front bumper on upside-down the first time - beware.
There is a lot of storage space behind the seats.
The screen and rain cover included are sturdy, fit well, and store easily.
Installation of the trailer hitch on the bicycle is very easy, although I had to insert the screw in the opposite direction (as mentioned in the instruction manual might be required) which meant a little more work.
Attaching and detaching the trailer is a piece of cake too.
The only downside is finding vendors who sell the Croozer 525, but Amazon came through and had the best price.
Overall, I have been thrilled with my purchase!

Burley Encore Bike Trailer Review

Burley Encore Bike Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this trailer after comparing it to the d'lite, chariot cabriolet and the croozer 525. The d'light was out of our price range, the chariot had plastic parts and expensive ad ons and I could not see a croozer(plus it weighed 33lbs) in person. So that left the Burley encore. I was able to compare both the d'lite and the encore in person and both had nice solid bench type padded seats and nice five point harnesses with solid buckles instead of d clips. They each had sun shades and zip up weather covers as well. The seats are almost the same size but the d'lite bows out for more elbow room. After comparing the two we decided the d'lite although nice was not worth the extra cost. The basic features we wanted were all in the Encore including a solid padded seat, padded harness, sun shade and the zip up weather cover for less money. It was easy to set up and I only had to install the wheel guards. Attaching the hitch was simple too. I have a 3.5 year old and a 10 month old and they both fit comfortably in this trailer. I did a test run with the trailer kid less and it pulled and turned well. I could not even feel it behind the bike! Then I put the kids in and could not feel them in there either! Amazing! Very light and easy to pull, tracks well. We're loving it so far and have used it on windy cold rainy days. The kids stay warm and dry. Highly recommend!
