Trail Gator Review

(More customer reviews)I have been wanting to get my family active into bike riding for some time. We live within three miles of shops, restaurants, entertainment, etc, yet we always drove. When my daughter was three, we spent a weekend at a local resort that had a lot of riding trails. I saw a gentleman hooking the trail gator up to his bike and stopped and chatted. He only had great things to say about it and I thought this was the perfect solution. When we returned home, I ordered the Trail Gator from Amazon. When it arrived and my husband installed it, it was pretty easy to attach. As other reviews state, you do need to adjust it a bit to the side, otherwise your child will lean quite a bit. We had to play with it for a while to find the perfect setting so our daughter would be sitting upright. However, now that we have had it for about 9 months, it is easy to attach and use. I ride my bike to work sometimes, and remove her bike from mine quickly. It also attaches just as fast. The biggest issue I have with the arrangement (not a problem specific to this product), is that she always seems to hit the brakes going uphill. We've decided that it is probably an adjustment issue, with her trying to scoot further up the seat as we go uphill. She is learning to pedal uphill, which helps a lot. Another problem, again, not specific to the product, is that my bike doesn't always like to shift down when I'm pulling her up the hill. I need to shift down before I get to the hill, otherwise I really struggle making it up in the higher gear. This attachment requires that you remove the training wheels, or purchase the flip-up type (due to going around corners). My daughter doesn't yet ride without training wheels, so we don't go anywhere and let her ride on her own, unattached. Overall, this product has been fantastic for my family. We ride our bikes at least once a weekend to get lunch, icecream, coffee or to the local greenway for a picnic. Sometimes we ride around the neighborhood just to ride. She loves to go on short trips on weeknights after work/daycare. This product has really enriched our lives and is hopfully setting up our daughter for a lifelong love of riding.

Weehoo iGo Bicycle Pedal Trailer Review

My five-year-old daughter, who isn't fully off of training wheels and never felt safe on a traditional trail-a-bike, went on a two-day 204 mile ride from Seattle to Portland on the Weehoo just weeks after we bought it. My two-year-old fits and has pedaled on it without any of the stability concerns my five-year-old had on traditional trail-a-bikes. The ride is amazingly stable, the thick mountain bike wheel and recumbent seat make bumps "fun", and the handlebar-free design leaves kids' hands free to grab drinks or to play on a mobile phone during breaks from pedaling.
There are lots of nice little features that show a lot of thought has been put into the design. There are two cupholders, and the second comes in handy for snacks or electronics. The built-in panniers are well designed and quite handy, though it takes some learning to get back there during a ride while balancing everything. Metal tubes cover the chain so that your child's legs or clothes won't get hurt or greasy from rubbing up against it. The pedals have straps to hold your kids' feet so that they can use the pull stroke in addition to the push stroke. The seatbelt is secure and easy to put on.
There are some downsides. At 35 pounds, the Weehoo is much heavier than most trail-a-bikes and even most adult bikes. Transporting it by car can be a challenge because it doesn't fit easily on many bicycle carriers, though it will fit on carriers that support bikes from the bottom (the Yakima hold-up works perfectly) and it can be crammed into most cars width-wise. It doesn't have multiple gears, though the single gear is fairly low so kids can help on the uphills when the rider in front most needs the help. The rear tires use schrader valves, whereas most road bikes use presta valves, so be sure to have a pump that supports the schrader valves (and a spare tube!). Fortunately, since it uses a thick mountain-bike tire, you're much more likely to get a flat in your road bike than your Weehoo.
