Dan Ellis's new book, Katrina: Survival and Revival, chronicles the near destruction of Pass Christian, MS and its miraculous recovery after Hurricane Katrina. It is a story told, not by a single narrator, but by the many voices of the survivors themselves. Mr. Ellis uses personal accounts, newspaper articles and emails submitted to his website during the aftermath to paint a compelling picture of the indomitable spirit of this peaceful coastal community. One cannot help but feel the raw emotions as they gradually unfold . . . first shock, then grief, acceptance, frustration and finally the hope and determination that would eventually ensure the city's survival.
Pass Christian was brought to the very brink of annihilation on August 29, 2005. Volunteers from across the nation poured in to offer aid and comfort to those afflicted long before the government stepped in. The book pays tribute to those young and old who left the comfort of their own homes to labor under the worst of conditions to help total strangers in their time of need. It also credits city officials and other local leaders with literally holding the city together as the wounds slowly healed.
The gradual return to normalcy is recorded in the many pictures scattered throughout this poignant composition. Images of splintered homes and businesses illustrate the extent to which Katrina demolished this once vibrant community. In contrast, current photos of new construction, new businesses and refurbished homes reveal the unmistakable signs of a city once again firmly in control of its destiny.
As a Katrina survivor myself, I can find some measure of closure in this book. The path from those first tumultuous days has been a long and sometimes difficult one, but to see this community flourish again has made the journey seem worthwhile.
