Rv Buyers Survival Guide Edition II Review

My apologies to other reviewers who had negative sentiments concerning this book but I (a 60 year old man) found this book very informative. No, there are no "tricks" and it does present "common sense" principles but it DOES explain in detail the dealer's process in establishing a price and in negotiating the lowest offer that they will probably take below the MSRP. It takes common sense and insider knowledge and organizes them so the average RV buyer can use them to their negotiating advantage. It is certainly better than walking into a dealership unarmed with any clues.
I think some of the complaints concerned the first edition. The second edition is in booklet form. It is a bit high priced for the size and quality of the book but it is NOT high priced when compared to the information the contents give to the reader.
Recently, a friend of mine bought a new Chevy pickup truck. While he was describing the negotiating process, I was thinking to myself that his actions seemed bull-headed and almost rude. But, as this book points out, you are negotiating for YOUR MONEY and not for five or ten dollars but for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
My buddy knew what a fair price was and he not only stuck to his guns but he was willing to walk out of the showroom unless they made a deal that day. Just as described in this book. If you have done your research properly and you KNOW what a fair price is then YOU MUST stick to your guns and not let sales-people talk you out of any more money with flimsy reasons.
The glossary is helpful and the author did steer me toward a fifth-wheel rather than a travel trailer by letting me know that there is more liveable space in the fifth-wheel for a given length. The trailer has a 3' hitching point in front. Also, the combined length of the truck and fifth-wheel will be shorter than with a truck and trailer because of the way the fifth-wheel hitches up in the bed of the truck rather than on the rear bumper area. That allows for easier maneuvering.
There were some very helpful guides about what to compare when shopping for a rig, too. They covered all the options such as bed size, holding tank size, hot water heater size, chassis, sidewall construction etc, etc.
But, the "meat" of the book was how to take all the information that you have gathered and figure out a "fair" price. Then, how to take that information and use it when you go to the dealer. Priceless. He explains what the MSRP is, how it is calculated and, most importantly, why it exists.
Remember, if the MSRP is a 40 % markup from the invoice price, you don't take 40 % off of the MSRP to get the invoice price. It would be a 28 % markdown from the MSRP to get the invoice price. Math is funny isn't it? Practice with your calculators.

Bob Mottram's book will stir up your wanderlust. It reminded me of "Blue Highways" by William Least Heat Moon with its glimpse of an incredibly rich, diverse, and fascinating America that exists far from the big cities and well beyond the attention of most of our media. The best compliment I can pay this book is that I didn't want it to end.

2010 Exit Now: Interstate Exit Directory Review

We are fulltime RVer's-which means we live in the RV year round. I was using an old Next Exit and had this book recommended by another fulltime rv couple. The 2 major assets of this particular Interstate book are each interstate follows through the states and are in numerical order starting with I-4 ending with the city loop road I-710 and number 2-every few pages there is a spot inserted with enough room to write your own notes. No other books that I've used have that feature. OH and I forgot it's also spiral bound, makes page flipping a breeze.
I purchase this through Amazon which was the best price!

To rephrase Ratty's famous comment to Mole in "The Wind in the Willows": There is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in an RV.
By even the most charitable of definitions, I am not what anyone would call "handy" when it comes to fixing things about our sticks-and-bricks house. I am not good at it and I hate taking the time for even the most basic of repairs.
Having said that, I also note that I love puttering around our 5th wheel and could happily spend hours at a time on RV related projects! I guess that's why I think the 10 Minute Tech books are so terrific. More than 600 practical and money-saving ideas in each of the three volumes . . . clever, practical solutions to both everyday challenges and to obscure situations the average RVer will never come across. Each idea presents a practical, real-life solution. Each has been developed by an RVer. The projects are presented in language which is brief, understandable and to the point . . . and the illustrations do a great job of clearing up any questions left unanswered by the text.
The books are conveniently divided into sections on Livability, Safety, Appliances, Maintenance, Automotive, In Camp, Systems, Storage, Towing, Accessories, Sanitation, Doors-Hatches-Handles, Cleaning-Protecting, and Tools. Only a brief perusal is needed to start the creative juices flowing - to send the reader, tool box in hand, off on another project. A fun read when you are nowhere near an RV. An indispensable reference when you are on the road.

An RV isn't a home until those changes, upgrades, and small-scale fixes have been made that put a personal stamp on it. 10-Minute Tech, Volume 2 shows that this process need not be fraught with difficulty or drama. Aimed at both the RV novice and the seasoned pro, the information here is drawn from Trailer Life and MotorHome magazines' "Quick Tips" self-help column, written by and for RVers and based on actual experience. The book contains little-known tips that RVers shouldn't live without and hundreds of illustrations and line drawings to make changes easy. Arranged in a straightforward reference format for easy access to particular problems, 10-Minute Tech provides the no-nonsense advice readers have come to expect from this series.

The Everything Family Guide To Rv Travel And Campgrounds: From Choosing The Right Vehicle To Planning Your Trip--All You Need For Your Adventure On Wheels (Everything (History & Travel)) Review

The Everything Family Guide To Rv Travel And Campgrounds: From Choosing The Right Vehicle To Planning Your Trip--All You Need For Your Adventure On Wheels (Everything (History and Travel))

I purchased this book in the hopes my wife would like it, since it did not get into the heavy depth and geek details that the RV Bible does, which my wife would not care for. Both my wife and I were instead dissappointed with the book because it did not give ENOUGH detail. It tries to cover everything but instead seems to gloss over details that I think needed more explantation. In an attempt to be an EVERYTHING family guide, it's attempt in my opinion falls somewhat flat.
The back THIRD of the book lists campgrounds I would assume the author likes, with adaquate detail given to give you an idea about them.
WHY?
Why toss away 145 pages to be a not very good imatation of what Woodalls, Fodar, Frommers, Foghorn Press, Trailer Life AAA and a host of others have ALREADY done, in far better detail?
IMHO those pages would have been better used explaining in more detail the subjects you bought the book for. It is like the author got tired of the project, the publisher wanted to increase the page count, so they threw this on the back.
OK, want an example? Lets choose trailer brakes. A very serious and important issue RV'ers should know about, the author spends a quick three paragraphs (yes they were thick paragraphs) on a subject that could have easily had more detail, and in such a safety related area I feel should have.
The little breakouts, E-Facts and E-Alert, E-Essential Etc, were nice little snippets, But many lacked any meat or purpose. For instance, to break out the fact that people have different opinions on how to tow a dinghy vehicle like it was an essential piece of info that would ruin your trip if you did not know is a bit much. You could have included something in the paragraphs stating "opinions vary widely" or some such thing but to drag it out as a break out seems a waste.
After all this, I am not saying the book does not have it's merits. It is written in a nice plain english, friendly way, with good info provided to a new or nearly new RV'er. It does attempt to touch on everything, and at least get you thinking about issues a person new to RV'ing needs to think about.
It is a family guide, one that is written well enough that even the kids might read some of, and that is a plus to this book over others I have seen including RV Bible. I like RVB because I am a Geek, I want detail and the more the better, but I am not everybody, and not everybody wants to know how to calculate Combined Gross Vehicle Weights, (though they should know how, like medicine it is good for you and keeps you safe).
For a general introduction to RV'ing this book is pretty good, but if the author & publisher read this, I would much rather loose the campground directory, and instead run a small apendix referencing the authors FAVORITE campgrounds in an established book such as Wodalls or one of the others. Use a small paragraph to tell me why you the author like that campground, ( very friendly host, wonderful scenic location, etc). The author is billed as an experienced RV'er, so if you want to talk about campgrounds, lets get some of your road experience on the actual campgrounds you have stayed at.
Overall, a 3.5 but Amazon does not give half points. I will give you the extra half point, because I think the book does fill a nich, for the new RV'er, and is not as insulting as the RV'ng for dummy or complete idiot titles are.
Marian, good luck on your second edition.

I was surprised to find how many places in Wisconsin that I've camped at are not listed in this book. It is huge but still far from exhaustive. The emphasis by far is on commercial RV parks over national, state, and regional campgrounds. My view of Woodall's is similar. Between the two of them, they cover enough RV-friendly places in Wisconsin to be useful, but even combined are woefully far from complete.

This book is written with a lot of first hand knowledge of all areas of living full time in an RV. It is also written for and by average people who do not have an unlimited income and therefore must keep an eye on the most efficient means to an end. They not only "talk the talk" but have "walked the walk" I have given away two other recent books on this subject, but I won't part with this one.
