Brigitte, Lucky's legal guardian, has created her own niche in Hard Pan with a delightful French cuisine restaurant open for lunch on the weekends. Everyone has a piece of advice for Brigitte as she continues to adapt to the American way of life while staying true to herself. Miles --- newly certifiable genius --- is excited to share his sixth birthday celebration with Lucky, and he wants the whole town invited.
Lucky has come to the conclusion, however, that only a girl best friend will truly make her 11th year unforgettable. Enter Paloma Wellborne, niece of a geologist who happens to stop at Brigitte's cafe for lunch on the way to surveying rock layers in the desert. Paloma and Lucky hit it off right away --- laughing hysterically at gifts for chickens, swimming lessons in a bucket, and other all-important girl conversations. When Paloma's parents agree to let Paloma spend the weekend, Lucky makes plans to impress her with all the wonders Hard Pan has to offer. Lucky plots to uncover the mystery surrounding the rather large box sitting in Short Sammy's yard, stay far away from Lincoln and Miles, bake over 50 cupcakes for the birthday celebration, and perhaps search for a long-lost broach hidden outside of Hard Pan.
While Lucky promised both Brigitte and Paloma's parents that she would make good decisions, Lucky also promised herself that she would be intrepid from now on. Lucky doesn't live up to her namesake, however, when things go unplanned and she puts both Paloma and herself in danger. Her fearlessness starts to break, and she is forced to make some tough decisions that impact others more than she had imagined.
Susan Patron created magic in her Newbery Award-winning THE HIGHER POWER OF LUCKY, and fans will not be disappointed with this rewarding sequel. Matt Phelan once again sprinkles elegant drawings throughout that bring an added depth to the story. I appreciate that as this series grows so do all of the characters. They have learned from their mistakes, but they still continue to make new ones. I also enjoyed the ease in reading the book. You feel as though you're tagging along with Lucky and are in the center of the action. It's a fast read, but a very rewarding one. LUCKY BREAKS is the second book in the Lucky trilogy, and readers can expect a satisfying conclusion in the future.

(More customer reviews)There is nothing Annika wouldn't do for her six-year-old brother Jeremy. She adores him to no end and she wants to give him anything he wants. More than anything, she wants to give him hope. Jeremy has cancer and he's about to have surgery. He's been very nervous about it so Annika is sure that all he needs is positive thinking to get him through it. Annika knows she has to be creative and make him believe that things will go well, so she tells him she has a magic genie that can grant wishes. What can go wrong? She knows what he wants, or at least she thinks she does. When her good intentions backfire and Jeremy wishes for Steve Raleigh, his favorite actor, to visit him, Annika decides to do whatever it takes to make his wish come true. She figures it shouldn't be too hard. She'll just show him Jeremy's picure and he will have to agree. Easy.
Not. So not easy. Stalking an actor is way harder than she thought. First of all, she has to find him, then she has to get close enough to talk to him without getting arrested or making a fool of herself. But Annika is no quitter. Even if it means wrangling snakes, becoming a nun and doing her own stunts, she will bring Steve to her brother. But once she captures him, will she be able to resist his charms? After all, he is rich, gorgeous and famous. They don't live in the same world but they may have more in common than they think.
Just One Wish is a bit of a tear-jerker, but it is also sweet, romantic and hilarious. The situatuions Annika gets herself into (and somehow manages to get out of) will make you laugh out loud and her devotion and love for her brother will melt your heart. I adore Janette Rallison's wit and humor. I love how she creates such amazing and relatable characters and truly brings them to life. This is another fantastic book she has written and I highly recommend it to anyone with a beating heart.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London Review

(More customer reviews)I just read 'Julie's Gift' written by Kevin Kirsch, a husband who is not a feelings sharer, but through this novella lets us all know (including his wife) that he does have deep feelings. It is a nice light read that may make you look at your unromantic partner a bit differently since it reminds you that just because feelings are not shared doesn't mean they're not felt. The plot is not riveting and you won't find a car chase, but that's the best part. It revolves around a couple's anniversary trip to London, England. The husband admits his idea of a trip is from the couch to the fridge, but goes out of love for his wife. It unfolds from there. The coolest thing about this book is that it was penned in secret by the husband and presented to her as a Valentine's surprise! Julie's Gift has great sample itineraries (how they actually spent their days in London) as well as the author's Top Ten London Travel Tips for the Guys (funny and useful list).
Not everyone is romantic or able to share feelings aloud, and many of those people are men. This book is a thoughtful and dare I say passionate shout to his wife to tell her that even when he doesn't say so, he is happy and lucky to be with her.

Violent Visions of Murder Review

(More customer reviews)Brianna, a beautiful young lady, has finally come to a place in life when she feels that she can devote her time to searching for her dead brother's twin. The account her mother gave her about the birth of the twins had given her clues to her brother's identity and she was determined to find him. Her "psychic" abilities, if used could drain her of energy, not to mention the possible negative emotional effects.
She meets David in a police investigation and they become involved as "just friends". Though she does wonder about the possibility of his being her brother off and on. Then she meets Preston, Robert and Donald. Could any one of these men be her brother?
The story is told masterfully, drawing one to continue reading until the mystery is solved. Great reading!

(More customer reviews)I enjoy reading a cozy mystery. A cozy mystery is just that . . . no gore, ugliness or sensuality. Just like a great cup of tea! The title of this book, "Who Wants Tyler Dead?" makes for an interesting start to the story. Marielle is hired, after her accident, to take ten-year old Tyler, his younger sister, and their grandmother to Oregon. Marielle needs the money and decides it's the best thing for her right now. A nice, big, newer pickup with a camper hatch is provided for her to drive to Oregon. She, and her charges, camp along the way. Camping brings out ALOT of the incidences that create the mystery surrounding Tyler. I enjoyed the trip from California to Oregon with Marielle and the others.
This is an interesting mystery with some humor and romance intertwined throughout the story. Why is someone targeting Tyler? And where is the children's mother? Marielle's sleuthing comes to the front and so she's on the case.
With twists and turns, I found this book immensely entertaining.

Signs of Life: A Memoir Review

(More customer reviews)Signs of Life is a rare and wonderful book that should be highlighted as an example of what a good memoir can be. There is a long list of things remarkable about this memoir, starting with the author is only in her early twenties but possesses a remarkable degree of self-awareness. As an English teacher, not only is the book well written, but also Ms. Taylor weaves in beloved bits of literature that adds even more depth to the story. Signs of Life depicts an emotionally wrenching journey of highs and lows through two life changing events without ever slipping into the self-absorption that can ruin a memoir.
Natalie Taylor and her husband Josh were an average, young, married couple, perhaps a little bit happier and luckier than most. When Josh dies in a freak accident, Natalie is twenty-four years old and pregnant with their first child. Ms. Taylor easily draws the reader into sharing her journey of grief, uneasiness, and awkwardness. The death of a young person holds a unique degree of tragedy, and the descriptions of how Josh's friends and family memorialize him are seen through the unique perspective of how Natalie both yearns and dreads to hear Josh spoken of publicly.
Enhancing Natalie's story are the friends and family that surround her. Often, they provide comfort and company, but equally, they can also irritate and annoy. Ms. Taylor writes across a wide spectrum of relationship joys and challenges with affection and a wry wit. When her son Kai is born, Natalie leans on her family for help and support while they equally struggle with joy and grief.
As time passes, Natalie comes to terms with one of the truisms of life--things change. She returns to her job teaching school, gets counseling, and finds a support group for single mothers. It is not that she loves or misses Josh any less, but that as life proceeds it becomes different, creating a new context in which we must live.
I highly recommend Signs of Life to anyone faced with a difficult personal challenge. Ms. Taylor's frank and detailed depiction of facing a stunning loss and the demands of single motherhood will affect and inspire you. Fans of memoirs will enjoy a well-written book with the exactly right degree of personal revelation, humor, and strength.

After the death of his mother, Luke's father, Frank, starts drinking again after a long period of sobriety and is quickly reduced to a soggy, hopeless wreck. Overwhelmed by the demands of caring for an active alcoholic, and coping with his own grief, 17-year-old Luke flees New York for the Moab Desert, where he and his parents once traveled. He finds a job at the Moonflower youth hostel and lives among the quirky inhabitants.
Ava, a student and sometime waitress, has recently joined Alcoholics Anonymous and although she's trying to deal with her addiction, she's having a hard time. Through AA, she meets Frank, Luke's father. She's alienated from her parents, who have themselves moved to the Moab Desert -- and that's where the miraculous connections begin to weave together.
The story is told in Luke's and Ava's alternating points of view. It's well handled. The novel will inspire any young person dealing with addiction, autonomy and self-awareness. The issues are complicated -- God, synchronicity, life and death, our responsibility to others, forgiveness...Lena Roy shies away from nothing. Her clear-eyed portrait of what AA looks like to a newcomer is refreshing, and although she illustrates, quite beautifully, why "the program" works, she never talks down to her reader, nor does she preach. The characters are well rounded, the story intriguing, the possibilities inspiring.
Highly recommended.

Show Me Good Land Review

(More customer reviews)I started this book last night and I can't put it down (with the exception of much needed sleep of course though even that was fought for want of reading more). The characters in the story are complex,very real and so endearing....ALL of them. You find your heart breaking for those you thought cold and end up wanting the best for all of them. Her eloquence draws you in and keeps you there content to watch the world unfold. A truly great book!

No character is fully good or fully bad, and the pleasure of this book's reading lies in discovering where individual moral lines are drawn.

He manages to get a job working with horses at Delta Park, that's where he meets Lean on Pete, a four year old racehorse to whom he becomes particularity attached, and who will become the cause of his sudden departure from Portland and the beginning of an unenviable mission to find a place for himself in the world, somewhere he can call home.
Lean on Pete is a touching tale of a young boy who wants nothing more than to be able to finish school, join the school football team, and have a secure family home. Charlie tells his own tale in his own no-nonsense fashion as he tries to find just that. The result is an appealing and heart warming read, filled with a cast of mist-fits, the good natured, and the not to be trusted. I thoroughly enjoyed Lean on Pete.

The Pastoral Clinic: Addiction and Dispossession along the Rio Grande Review

(More customer reviews)The author reports on, and reflects upon, the anthropological research that she conducted in the region where she herself grew up: the Española Valley in Northern New Mexico. It is a region that few outsiders have taken the trouble to understand, while insiders (who generally feel beleaguered) are usually not eager to disclose to Anglos like me what their lives are like.
Dr. Garcia displays an all-too-rare insistence on questioning nearly everything. She thinks for herself in a refreshing and provocative way. In the process, she humbly yet methodically undermines conventional wisdom about the nature of addiction and the treatment of addicts.
In the past few years, I've seen enough of northern New Mexico to realize that alongside its grandeur and hospitality is a troubled and despairing aspect. Yet until now I had little idea of the depth, pervasiveness, and complexity of its problems. This book exposes them while providing a wide-ranging context. The author's systemic perspective encompasses geography, history, government social services, and more. As such, the book is appropriately disturbing on many levels. At the same time, it also bears poignant witness to human decency and loyalty and compassion under trying circumstances.
The scholarly stuff (such as literature reviews and methodological reflections), which is important to experts, is confined largely to the first few pages of each chapter. The rest of it reads much like an article in The New Yorker: straight-talking, compelling writing that is accessible also to non-experts.
This book gave me much more of an insider's view of (one slice of) Hispano life in the Española Valley than I imagined I'd ever be privileged to know. It has opened my eyes, and for that I'm grateful.
