(More customer reviews)I really enjoyed this book! Mr. Wilson lets his reader experience what it is like to drive and/or ride in an eighteen wheeler. But this book is more than a description of life on the road. Mr. Wilson makes observations about life, his and other's. He shows kindness toward the people he meets and tries to understand why they are out there,too.
Mr. Wilson, like the authors of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and "Moby Dick" uses detailed descriptions of men performing a particular occupation to make universal observations about his beliefs and questions about life. He never gets preachy, though, and just when the writing might be getting a little bit "mystical" something happens with the "load" or the equipment and he pulls us right back into the urgency of the moment. This is a fascinating book for anyone who ever wondered what those guys inside those big trucks that whiz past us on the freeway at 3:00 am. are really like.

If you want to avoid getting screwed over when you get into driving you need to read this. There are tons of books out there on just passing your CDL test. That stuff is FREE at your motor vehicle office. You don't have to pay for it.The things in this book are what you WILL have to deal with in starting out as a driver, and even more so once you are really out there all by yourself. It is reality and some of it is pretty incredible. On top of it all, there is some really funny stuff in here. Once you have been driving awhile, it will all make perfect sense. This is real world trucking dudes, plus you learn about some different jobs that you might not ordinarily associate with trucking, and it has the coolest cover of all. If you want to go trucking, this book kills! Check it out!

(More customer reviews)I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book, and it took a few pages to capture my interest. I did enjoy reading the many vignettes from the author's experiences driving a truck. People in most jobs can relate to the frustrations with poor managers, incompetent peers, and overly-rosy job descriptions. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review. The only thing I felt was missing was a few lines about what the author did after the events of the book. The book was well-edited; I did not find grammatical or spelling errors.
Overall, I would recommend this book as a good read.

His writing style is very akin to my own stream of thought and I had very little problem getting his points. Brett lays out the 'rules of the game' very well and offers some good advice to survive and thrive. Worth every penny.

(More customer reviews)If you have never driven a tractor trailer this is a great book. It covers everything from a drivers perspective. The truck itself including: Engines, Transmissions, Parts, Driving techniques, Hazmat, Airbrakes, Life on the road etc. What it does not cover in great detail is if you want to start your own trucking company, or authority. It touches on parts and mentions the D.O.T and FMCSR but mostly from the drivers interaction with those agencies, not as a trucking company. This book is for drivers behind the wheel on a day to day basis. Non-drivers will find it useful and insightful but if you are wishing to start your own company, It does not cover in detail the authorities you will need and actual details involved in doing so. The book never claims it does cover that information... this review is to let you know what is not in there in that regard. As a future driver, or someone interested in the actual day to day operations or the skills needed to operate a tractor trailer, this book is great and worthy of 5 stars.
