This book covers the scene at Bonneville from the perspective of a driver involved with two teams. Not a whole lot of technical information for gear heads, but basically from the inside of the cockpit - oh my God! - and team dynamics. It was worth adding to my collection of moto-journalism, and made a good read for my light rail commute.

Hard Aground with Eddie Jones: Another Incomplete Idiot's Guide to Doing Stupid Stuff With Boats

Eddie Jones can laugh now, but the things that happened when he went sailing would have made me quit sailing forever. And I wonder about his wife and sons. Do they still dare go out with him? Eddie makes each disaster--mostly they happened due to a momentary lack of good judgment on his part--sound like fun. A great writer, a great book, even if you don't take to the sea.

Hard Aground with Eddie Jones is a collection of cruising and boating stories, offering a "stuck up" look at the underside of cruising and the frustrations we "land-cuffed" sailors experience when our plans for coastal exploration and tropical destinations run aground on the shoals of family, finances and failing health. These columns first appeared in Carolina Cruising and Coastal Cruising Magazine."If there is a better nautical writer when it comes to relationships and family interactions on the water than Eddie Jones, we don't know about them." -Claiborne Young, author of Cruising Guide to North Carolina"Thanks for your latest Hard Aground column, Eddie. Mel was wondering why I was laughing so early in the morning." -Tom Neale, Cruising Coast and Islands"Eddie has an excellent ear for words and is one of North Carolina's nautical treasures."-Dave Martin, Cruising World Magazine

Fergus: The Soccer Playing Colt Review

Fergus: The Soccer Playing Colt

Simpson Farms raises polo ponies. But one of the colts, named Fergus, has zero interest in polo. Fergus spent the days doing somersaults and back flips. Bobby Simpson is the boy who owns Fergus.
One day Bobby is practicing soccer moves with his friend, Ramon Aguilar, when he notices Fergus's interest. As a lark, the boys send t he soccer ball toward the colt. Sure enough, Fergus sends the ball right back to them. Turns out Fergus is a natural for the position of goalkeeper. Local residents begin coming around to watch Fergus play soccer. Word spreads and soon the media is involved.
It is not long before Ian Conner with the International Soccer Federation has the boys and the colt on a national tour. They play soccer in famous places, such as at the Chicago Diamond, Ohio Stadium, Foxboro Stadium, Tampa Stadium, and even the Giants Stadium. Fergus's name becomes known all over the globe.
In steps Rumble Smith, a rodeo stockman with a mean temper. He and Reiterate Johnson make plans to kidnap Fergus from the tour.
***** This book may target boys, but girls will enjoy this story just as much. I found myself smiling as I read of Fergus's antics. The frolicking colt is just so fun to read about. He is amazing! There are a few illustrations scattered throughout the tale to help boost the imagination. I could clearly see that the Illustrators drew in some tiny details too.
All-in-all, you will find this the perfect read for kids around the ages of 8 to 15. Well written, easy to understand and follow, and highly recommended! *****

This rollicking yet suspenseful story of an unusually talented colt and the boys who embrace his uniqueness will have readers riveted from beginning to end. When the acrobatic palomino colt, bred to play polo, shows interest and aptitude for playing soccer goalkeeper, he is launched on a nationwide tour to promote the sport. His owner, 12-year-old Bobby Simpson, and his best friend, Ramon Aguilar accompany the colt in a luxury motor home with horse-quarters–the Fergus Special. The colt enjoys immediate fame, but not without peril. Before long Rumble Smith, a rodeo stock-dealer, who doesn't mind operating on the wrong side of the law, plots to abduct the world-renowned colt. He ropes his two bumbling ranch hands, Billy Joe Culpepper and Reiterate Johnson into helping him. Suspense, adventure, and lessons in loyalty and teamwork fill the pages of this book. With a multi-cultural flavor and many interesting facts about famous U.S. ball parks and buildings, this is a book for the young and young at heart.

The Hurricanes: One High School Team's Homecoming After Katrina Review

The Hurricanes: One High School Team's Homecoming After Katrina

I'll start out by saying that this is a good story. This book focuses on football, and the story of a team and teams coming together to rebuild their lives. It's a "rags-to-riches" tale that will surely one-day make a good movie, but it ignores the real tragedy that I was thinking about the entire time. What it doesn't focus on is the real tragedy of why rural Louisiana is dirt poor and uneducated. A year after Katrina, officials are proud to announce that the new sod is on the field, yet there is no school cafeteria. The scoreboard works, but there are not enough books to go around at school. More examples abound like this abound, but it is clear to me why communities like this will continue to decline as they focus more on their fleeting football success than on graduating educated kids from their high schools. A few of these kids will end up in college, and maybe one every few years will play pro ball, but 200 others will be poorly served by their lack of a decent education.

The Complete Guide to Endurance Riding and Competition (Howell reference books) Review

The Complete Guide to Endurance Riding and Competition (Howell reference books)

Want to feel good, cover a lot of ground, and enjoy a real sense of accomplishment? And spend a lot of time with your horse? Then read this book. Endurance riding (strictly speaking, going 50-100 miles a day across the countryside for 1-5 days on or with your horse) should not be attempted unless you and your horse have some basic training, including physical conditioning, but with the right approach almost anyone can do it. Donna shows you how, from basics to true competition (not only how to reach the finish line in one piece but how to be one of the first arrivals on a horse that is ready and able to keep going). There are a number of books offering advice on endurance riding, and most provide valuable information, but I find this one the best starting point. Besides covering the fundamentals found in almost every endurance book, Donna offers exercises for you and your horse that help you both to finish without being cramped, exhausted or otherwise unfit to continue (I can testify to this!). She also injects many nuggets of wisdom from her extensive personal experience. Finally, the format includes many helpful diagrams, illustrations, photos, boxes, summaries, lists and references that get the necessary concepts across much better than plain words in a paragraph, which makes for easier reading and quicker comprehension. My only complaint is that the book is too big to fit in my saddlebag.

First Star to the Right and Straight on Till Morning.... At the 90-mile vet check she sat in the middle of the road crying, claiming extreme illness and trying to avoid her nightmarish fears her horse would die of founder or colic, or anything. The last ten miles of trail stretched forever in her mind, black like licorice taffy. After a large measure of TLC from her patient and understanding crew, she and the gelding were out of the check and on the trail again. The entire universe shrank to center on the pair in the moonlight. Time stopped and the world faded into nothingness. They were running in a small, ever-changing pocket of existence, the rhythm of his hooves, the heartbeat of that universe. Ribbons and trail appeared before them and lost substance as they moved past. For the rider, clinging to the saddle, there was no thought, no pain, no emotion, only the instinctive drive to chase past each ribbon as it appeared. Suddenly her horse jumped sideways, eyes and ears frozen forward. Awakened from her trance, she oriented herself on his suspected woods troll, a familiar embankment that meant they were a half-mile from home. Easing him past the scary object, she sent the gelding on, clinging to his neck. As his soft lope swept them across the finish line, she wanted to laugh out loud or cry, but was unable to summon the strength for either. A few small tears trickled down her cheek, the only sign of the enormous pride she felt inside. About three essays in I started laughing uncontrollably. "What?" my husband said. Gasping, tears running down my face, I attempted to say, "No, really, it's not THAT funny..." Yet somehow, no other writer makes me laugh quite so hard.

This is a great motor. The unit lift sometimes sticks, and the unit is heavy - which makes the hydrolic lift nice. Has plenty of power and is very good on battery life.
Pulls a lot of current in windy situations, so make sure your wiring is free of corrosion and the proper guage.
