(More customer reviews)After sailing for 30 years, I was looking for a book for my children to use to give them a solid foundation. I ordered another 5 star book recommended by sailing schools, but ran across this one at the library.
This book is head and shoulders above the other. It covers all the basics in an easy to read style, and the huge number of detailed drawings are both beautiful and incredibly informative.
In addition to the basic stuff you need to know to sail a small boat, it also has a wealth of deeper information, about everything from bouyancy and balance, to boat construction and history.
I'm buying a copy for each of my kids, and recommending it to my sailing friends. As for the other books, I will probably either return them, or leave them to gather dust on a shelf.

(More customer reviews)I found Day By Day to be compelling reading as I share the same love and awe of nature as Mr. Petersen and his family. We enjoyed a cruise from Vancouver to Sitka, Juneau and Glacier Bay some years ago. The observations of these areas in the book were particularly interesting to me. To experience Glacier Bay cruising alone in a small boat was truly an awesome feat. The book describes the wild life viewed in detail indicating how to keep oneself safe while viewing bears, etc.
Tips on fishing these beautiful waters also were of interest. The catching of about every game fish, crabs, and digging clams was included in the book. This book is also a guide to great places to eat along the way, on land sights not to be missed, hot springs for bathing and best places to anchor.
To anyone owning a boat, the mechanical problems described and how they were corrected would be very helpful. Also, a novice would find invaluable the detailed descriptions of tides, times to avoid certain waters and highlights of the many inlets and coves he explored and which are named in the book.
There are numerous instances of protection and guidance as the result of his leaning on the almighty and trusting in God's care.
To read this book is a must for anyone contemplating cruising these waters and it would be a valuable companion on one's trip.

It is amazing how much information is packed in this pocket sized book. When the fish aren't biting, this book is a great read for learning more about such things as knot tying, navigation, weather, etc. The book caters to all levels of boating expertise, and for the price, there is no reason not to have it onboard. The one thing wrong with this book is the blurb on the front cover. It should read "Everything You Really Need to Know..." But, the disservice is done to the author--not to readers. It is not possible to tell everything that everyone might need to know in order to do something. What this book does tell is what anyone who is even contemplating restoring a sailboat had better know. It is far more than an overview of the author's own project though, Rather than just hitting the highlites, it covers e-v-e-r-y important point to keep in mind for the project from beginning to end. I have worked with hand tools for more than forty years, and it still gave me some pointers!
There is one thing peculiar about the book. Women, can't seem to keep their hands off it. My wife and her girl friend both liked the book. As if that wasn't strange enough, I took the book with me to my doctors office, and ended up checked into the emergency ward. At one point, I woke up to find my nurse looking through the book. Well, I guess that might be helpful for a guy trying to talk his wife into such a project, but it seemed kind of odd. I asked, and apparently they simply like the way the guy thinks.

JD Cardwell considers all sailboats under 22' as "not really cruisers". There are many on the water that would disagree. While a bigger trailerable may be more comfortable, it's also harder to tow, and more expensive.
The authour needlessly runs the risk of pushing the dream beyond the scope of those with limited resources.
This book may be considered valuable by those with or considering boats between 22 to 26 feet, but probably not to others.
Lastly, the authour obviously places more importance on creature comfort than seaworthiness, O.K. for the marina crowd, but offensive to the true cruising sailor.

I also like the stories in the second half of the book. The tech parts are very enlightening and the adventures he and his family have bring back lots of memories. The breezy writing style made the tech parts easy to take, and the stories were both lessons learned and funny. The book is every bit as good as his wilderness guide, and I'll keep them both by my side.

(More customer reviews)I have been a trailor sailor for many years, and have bought most of the books of the subject over the years. This is the most comprehensive book on CRUISING trailor sailors to come out. It brings the problem of big trailor sailors that are very difficult to trailor and launch to the fore. One warning, the displacements listed at the end of the book are those provided by the manufacturers. They usually do not include the weight of trailor, sails, mast/boom, equipment,and are often still faked lower than they really are. For example, I looked at the Telstar last year which is listed in the book and by the manufacturer as 3000lbs, but owners had taken theirs to commercial scales and measured them as being close to 7000lbs. This goes for most of the boats listed.

I could not find the seperate components for less money with free shipping, well worth a benjamin. For my installation, in the skirt of my 5th wheel trailer, there is a small problem, it is not totally waterproof at the rear, but then it was not designed to be installed in a wet location. A few big globs of Goop fixed the problem and I no longer have to cram the cord into a small box compartment. The instructions were confusing and almost illegible, but if you need instructions for a job like this, get someone else to do it. I would give it 5 stars if it had been waterproof.
