I had the distinct pleasure of reading "The Long Winter," a moving memoir of an orphaned child's experience in the 1970's foster care system. I've always been shocked by the actions of others when they think no one will find out what they've done, and this memoir didn't fail to provide even more examples of the surprising acts of adults. Mr. Owen pens his most personal and painful childhood experiences in a sensitive way with which many who lived an unconventional early life will be able to easily identify. His direct writing style leaves no time for the reader to weep, as readers are pulling for the character to succeed from the opening page.
Definitely worth a read. The characters in Mr. Owen's story will sit with readers long after they've turned the last page of this unique memoir.
