(More customer reviews)Saris builds bike racks like a brick-you-know-what. The T-RAX is no exception. I regularly haul bikes all over the mountains and by-ways of the Pacific Northwest, this four-place hitch-mounted rack works with my Prius perfectly. I have had this rack for three-plus years and it is going strong. Straps that hold on both the vertical and horizontal axis to keep the bikes in place, there is no issue about rubbing - and they go on and off in seconds. With no hitch-wobble due to the screw-down pin system (seriously, the only major concern I have with my Prius is that I forget bikes are back there). I have been very happy with the Saris T-RAX, it was a bit more than several bargain racks - but has none of the issues which can make hauling bikes a pain, or even dangerous. There are more expensive rack systems available, my opinion (based on several years of use) is that Saris is all-that and more. It is so strong, I leave it on during the week to discourage those who parallel park by braille - no one messes with my back bumper anymore!

(More customer reviews)I tried a friend's very similar to this. Also bought a different type that uses the rubber straps for securing. I prefer these plates that screw down. Also, my friend's bolts are shorter, so with bikes with fat bars, you had to use an adapter. Still have to use adapter for one 24" bike, but the 26" bike has enough clearance between bars to slide the bottom plate through. Just wish it would swing down for easier access to liftgate.

You could buy extenders on another website, but they cost $25 each..... and we would need 2 for each of our bikes. Both our twin girls have Barbie 16" bikes, and they do not fit at all on the bike rack, not even w/ extenders. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

(More customer reviews)It was really easy to put together and use. It was well packed - it emerged unscathed from a very scathed box. The steel seems thin until you relaize that it is just carrying bikes, not a trailor. It is strong enough and doesn't weigh a ton.
However... It comes in three main pieces that you bolt together. The resulting rack does exactly what it is supposed to. And it is solid. That's almost enough. The problem is that a thief must remove, at most, two bolts to steal your bikes. I used some Locktite on the bolts and cured that little failing. Now the bolts can't come out and the rack is about perfect.

Swagman XP Fold Down 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

"provides the ultimate in flexibility to accommodate a variety of bike frame designs"
So I figured I'd spend a little extra $$ on the rack and avoid buying a bunch of crossbars. Unfortunately, the rotating cradles are so big that quite a few bikes (including my GT XCR) start having trouble fitting into them without quite a bit of twisting and pushing, on top of that pretty much render crossbars useless.
It is a good rack but I'd recommend getting the non-rotating cradles if you really want more flexibility in the bikes it can accommodate.

I cannot get mine to lock. This is a minor issue but none the less a issue.If you have a SUV and need to get in the back, no problem the bikes can be lowered down so you can open the hatch. You only have to be strong enough to lower the bikes.

The problem is with our Chrysler minivan my adult bile hangs within 6 or 8 inches of the pavement. If your hitch is relatively low to the ground as on a minivan I'd choose another product.
I didn't actually use this product because of the above.
However I think I would find the bike hold down method slightly cumbersome. The screw turns down a long way and you aren't fastening each bike individually. You do them all at the same time.
Also while the optional locking hitch pin looks nice and looks like it would snug up the play in the hitch, it doesn't completely secure the rack. The bolts that attach the upright to the base can be removed with an ordinary wrench. Meaning the bikes and the upright could easily be removed while leaving the locked base in the hitch.

Swagman 3 Bike Fold Down (2" Receiver) Review

(More customer reviews)I have 3 bikes in my household; mine (Oval Shaped Frame), my wife's (Oval Shaped Frame), and my daughters (Guess what Oval Shaped Frame). The other problem is none of my bikes have a bar across the middle where the tie downs can balance the bikes well.
So this is what happens, once I get it all tied down if I hit to many bumps the bikes shift their position so the majority of the weight is near the ground. This is bad because the back wheel when attached to my car is only 4 inches from the ground, which means if I hit a speed bump the bikes rear wheel is toast. The tie downs tighten so this should not happen, but even after tightening mine until the plastic clip almost broke, my daughters bike had done a 90 degree turn after a speed bump which meant I had to get out, unlock it, spin it back around and then retighten (About a 10 minute job if done right). If I had to do again I would have gotten roof racks, and stored one bike in the trunk. Oh well.
I think rope might help this but it is going to look pretty ghetto.

Thule No-Sway Cage Accessory - 2 Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I was skeptical. How effective could these actually be? But for the price I figured "why not give them a try?"
Worth the extra $20 or so. Although there was little to no sway with the Thule rack in the first place (I love my Thule rack - the 912), these keep the bikes extra firm and in their place when you're on backroads. But, I think most importantly, these cages keep the bikes from banging into each other and causing unnecessary frame dings.
Cons:
A little bit of a hassle to put on and take off - maybe 5 minutes extra to secure two bikes.
Also, you have to throw them in your car rather than leave them on the rack - too easy to steal so why risk it.
I like them - I recommend as long as they're less than $20.

The bike is super stable, never comes into contact with the car, and I can get it on and off the rack in seconds. The only thing, if I need to lock the bike onto the rack, I have to pull out a locking cable. Otherwise, I love this rack. It fits my needs perfectly.

What really impressed me was the way you can position the straps. With each bike I was able to strap one verticle tube on the bike frame and one horizontal tube providing pretty good stability. This even worked great on my daughters small girls bike that has an oddly shapped frame.

(More customer reviews)I have a PT Cruiser and own the 2-bike rack which is mounted on a trailer hitch. This rack is perfect for my car and my womens bike (no cross bar). It is the easiest bike rack I have ever used. The bikes are very sturdy in transport. While the fold down feature is very easy and convenient to use, I find that without the bikes on the car if I keep the inside knob off and stored in the car, I can still open the trunk without using the fold down feature. Great for both ladies and mens frames. Fantastic product. Highly recommend. Not too difficult to assemble either.

(More customer reviews)I bought this rack at least 10 years ago, possibly 11 or 12. It has actually lasted longer than the Explorer I bought it for. I have it on a new Silverado now and it works like a champ. The release was originally appealing because the Explorer had the hatch style door and it allowed me to get into the cargo area without taking the bikes off. Now with the truck, I can still let down the bed gate and not have to take the bikes off the rack.
I have carried everything from mountain bikes to kids bikes to my big fat beach cruiser and it has had no problems with bowing or swaying. It's made out of some type of heavy duty iron with very solid welding. It's not lightweight, but it's not a workout either.
Now the best part: I recently realized that I stripped one of the turn knobs that allows the bars to go up and down. I called customer service and they allowed me to drive over to their facility and pick up a replacement. How cool was that? A lot of these manufacturers will not sell directly to the public, and they did with no problem. What's even better is; as I was standing out front putting on the part, the owner happened to come out to see if I needed help. He even gave me my money back stating stating that since I drove all the way over there and it was a little part, he wouldn't charge. I couldn't believe it! I tried to refuse, but he kept giving me back the payment! I was shocked!

The replacement part works great and I am a loyal customer for life. That type of service is unheard of these days. I was happy enough to just be able to get the part immediately. I know this rack will last another ten years, and hopefully I will be able to get other items from this company.
