Kenworth Trucks: The First 75 Years Review

Kenworth Trucks: The First 75 Years
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a quick read, with lots of photos and large text. It's mildly enlightening for charting a history of trucking, the development of the West, and the chronology of Kenworth models. The book is seriously lacking in depth, and comes across as advertisement frequently. A perfect "driver's lounge" book for dealers, and, of course, for display in the Kenworth lobby.

Hook and Ladders Review

Hook and Ladders
Average Reviews:

Excellent background on the development of the aerial ladder truck. This book is 99% dedicated to tillered, or tractor drawn aerials, with a quick look at the new technology of "all steer" apparatus on a single chassis. The true reason to purchase this book is the fantastic photography, the forte of the author. This all color picture book makes a great addition to the other books on modern fire apparatus. Only criticism is this type of book would be much better in a larger format. Special coverage of San Francisco Fire Dept, for those by the Bay.

Mack Trucks Review

If you are looking for a book on the history of mack's this one is for you. If you like pictures of old trucks (and really old ones, 1920's-30's) you will like this. The book only covers the beginning to the 60's. Some of the pictures are really nice. If you are a semi truck fan, this book will still be likable. Of course, this book only showcases mack trucks, and sometimes, the photos become repeditive, because the author shows a lot of shots of one particular model.

Big Book of Trucks Review

Big Book of Trucks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up this book as an impulse buy "for my daughter." She seems to enjoy it a lot because of the large, colorful pictures of trucks -- including a mobile home toter, a giant dump truck, trial truck, and a concept truck.
Each picture is well captioned with interesting side notes. For example, the book points out the concrete truck's drum rotates both directions, one to mix the concrete (and prevent it from setting) and the other to pour the mixture out.
It's one of her favorites and she's memorized all of the names (listening to a 24 month old say "mobile home toter" is pretty funny). As she gets older, she'll have more appreciation for the footnotes.
I also appreciate how the book displays trucks from different locales. For example, we don't see any "Road Trains" or "Trial Trucks" in the 'States.

Gas & Oil Trucks (Crestline Series) Review

Gas and Oil Trucks (Crestline Series)

If you ever wanted to know how these trucks looked like since the beggining of the oil industry, and its evolution throughout the years, this book will give you a very clear picture. It has lots of fantastic photos, drawings and other interesting details, but in my opinion it's very short of explicative/support text. Although it's only focused on American oil companies, the book is very good, and I had some great moments with it.

Book is very informative. Has lots of great old factory photos. The book really focuses on the 50' and 60's. It really covers very little on the 70's, which is what I was looking for.

Unable to find a manufacturer to build his new design, Leland James, the founder of Consolidated Freightways, founded what would become Freightliner. Photographs handpicked from the Freightliner Corporate Archives, combined with in-depth captions, document Freightliner trucks from those first trucks up to its partnership with Daimler Chrysler. Through the years Freighliners trucks brought many innovations including the all-aluminum cab, the integrated aluminum sleeper compartment and the full 90 degree tilt cab, all documented in the book.

I recently started racing. Since I'm getting more serious about it, I decided to start looking for a really nice car hauler. I stumbled across this book and love it! "NASCAR Transporters" gives a very good look inside all those trailers you see at the races. Lots of color photos are included with descrpitive text. While no costs for these fully equiped trailers are included, the reader is given plenty of background information on the trailers, packing order, optional equipment and planning. This book is a great primer for those interested in making a large car hauler purchase.

Slightly disappointed that it was only photos. Would have preferred some written background information on the vehicle build components.

The success of International's 1950s semi-trucks continued into the 1960s. Many series were carried over from the 1950s, but International now offered more models in each series to make them more versatile. The pictures you see in this book mainly cover the bigger straight trucks and over-the-road and off-highway trucks; the popular trucks like the V series, R series, D-400, DCO-400, CO-4000, and the line of "stars," to mention a few. As you look at them, enjoy and admire them, as many are long gone.

I really liked this book, could'nt put it down. I am kind of a student of old trucks, and I like the 50's, 60's, and 70's. this was the first book I bought on trucks and I was not disappointed. Many photos, and just enough information to read, without taking too much time to get through it. It should be a good part of any truck book collection. I really got an idea of what it must have been like to be an over the road trucker in those early days, I also purchased big rigs of the 60's, and big rigs of the 70's, and altogether, they make a nice collection. It is a cool book!

After WWII Americans were anxious to re-stoke the economy after a long "make-do with what you have" dry spell. By the 1950s new highways were being built, new trucking companies were being formed and old ones revived. Americans were buying newly-styled cars and the latest technologies once again. Semi-trucks helped pave the way for this huge growth spurt in America with dependable trucks built by Mack, GMC, Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, International, White Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Diamond T, Reo, Autocar, Brockway, Sterling and others, many using the increasingly popular diesel engines made by Buda, Hercules, Waukesha, and Cummins, which helped their heavy loads haul quicker. Ron Adams portrays this booming era with over 300 superb photos of trucks hauling cement, fuel, and a variety of goods to enthusiastic Americans.

A truck driver's tractor-trailer is more than just a vehicle or a tool for making a living. It is a calling card, a personal statement, a way of life. Truckers take as much joy and pride in modifying their rigs as hot-rodders and car customizers. Bette Garber presents some two dozen of the most interesting and creative custom trucks to be seen on the roads today. Each feature tells the story of the men and women who modify and drive these trucks, including the tricks of the trade. All are featured in full-color photography that highlights the flash, incredible detail, and personal touches of custom semi trucks. The book also provides an overview of the truck-show scene and what makes for an award-winning rig.

In The Driver's Seat: Interstate Trucking -- a Journey

I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book, and it took a few pages to capture my interest. I did enjoy reading the many vignettes from the author's experiences driving a truck. People in most jobs can relate to the frustrations with poor managers, incompetent peers, and overly-rosy job descriptions. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review. The only thing I felt was missing was a few lines about what the author did after the events of the book. The book was well-edited; I did not find grammatical or spelling errors.
Overall, I would recommend this book as a good read.

People asked me, "What's interstate trucking like? What's it really like out there on the road?" My short answer was always the same. "You have to like being alone." In The Driver's Seat -- memoir, travelogue, portrait of an industry -- is the long answer. One month after his 45th birthday, Marc Mayfield became a long-haul truck driver, something he'd always wanted to do. Away from home for weeks at a time, he crisscrossed America in 18-wheelers. Drove into sunsets and, often, through the night. Learned firsthand that truckers compensated by the mile are shortchanged with each paycheck, that the federal Hours of Service of Drivers are as unrealistic as they are dangerous, that every day out there brought threats to his truck, his cargo, and his life. But he loved the solitude of a truck cab and traveled more than one million accident-free miles. Along the way, he all but destroyed his marriage. Then he met someone he didn't know he'd been looking for: Himself.
