Food Booth, The Entrepreneur's Complete Guide to the Food Concession Business Review

I recently purchased the book with intent to aid my new taco truck business, but little did i did not realize the title "food booth" would be the entire contents of the book. It had many helpful hints and structure for setting up a concession business at a carnival or fair, but that about it. if your looking for information on street vending, hot dog stands, taco trucks, catering, ice cream trucks, or setting up any business outside of a fair, you'll be limited to about a page of information. More information lies in setting up and designing locations and booths for fairs, and less of the day to day logistics, tax aid, event permitting and insurance issues which i believe to be the most difficult ones that get skimmed over rather quickly. its a great book overall, but i guess it was my fault, the "concession business" = "booth at county fair"

Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit Review

Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit

I will never look at a supermarket tomato the same way again. Never mind that I'll never eat another one -- ever -- after reading this book. Author and food writer Barry Estabrook takes us on a journey to discover why those perfect-looking tomatoes piled up on supermarket shelves are so oddly tasteless, and believe me, the answer isn't very appetizing. Flavor, though, is the least of his concerns. The big story here is the human suffering -- right under our noses -- that we unknowingly perpetuate each time we pick a tomato up and put it in our shopping cart. It took courage to sniff this story out. Estabrook is clearly a pro in his field and deserves a great deal of credit. The writing is engrossing and at times hilarious, all of which makes the heartbreak a little easier to stomach.

Supermarket produce sections bulging with a year-round supply of perfectly round, bright red-orange tomatoes have become all but a national birthright. But in Tomatoland, which is based on his James Beard Award-winning article, "The Price of Tomatoes," investigative food journalist Barry Estabrook reveals the huge human and environmental cost of the $5 billion fresh tomato industry. Fields are sprayed with more than one hundred different herbicides and pesticides. Tomatoes are picked hard and green and artificially gassed until their skins acquire a marketable hue. Modern plant breeding has tripled yields, but has also produced fruits with dramatically reduced amounts of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C, and tomatoes that have fourteen times more sodium than the tomatoes our parents enjoyed. The relentless drive for low costs has fostered a thriving modern-day slave trade in the United States. How have we come to this point?Estabrook traces the supermarket tomato from its birthplace in the deserts of Peru to the impoverished town of Immokalee, Florida, a.k.a. the tomato capital of the United States. He visits the laboratories of seedsmen trying to develop varieties that can withstand the rigors of agribusiness and still taste like a garden tomato, and then moves on to commercial growers who operate on tens of thousands of acres, and eventually to a hillside field in Pennsylvania, where he meets an obsessed farmer who produces delectable tomatoes for the nation's top restaurants.Throughout Tomatoland, Estabrook presents a who's who cast of characters in the tomato industry: the avuncular octogenarian whose conglomerate grows one out of every eight tomatoes eaten in the United States; the ex-Marine who heads the group that dictates the size, color, and shape of every tomato shipped out of Florida; the U.S. attorney who has doggedly prosecuted human traffickers for the past decade; and the Guatemalan peasant who came north to earn money for his parents' medical bills and found himself enslaved for two years.Tomatoland reads like a suspenseful whodunit as well as an expose of today's agribusiness systems and the price we pay as a society when we take taste and thought out of our food purchases.

The BBQ Concession Trailer As a Home Based Business Opportunity (How To Make Serious Money With Your Own Mobile Food Business) Review

The book probably saved me hours and hours of trying to find information on my own and did it all in an easy to read format. I would highly recommend it for anyone even thinking of possibly starting their own food business. It deals with many interesting aspects of the mobile food business even though mostly it is about concession trailer sales. It covers all the basics of putting together your own business and even deals with ways how you can build your own trailer from scratch!
We have used some of the recipes in the book and have been serving them to over 5000 people since last summer and had very good feedback the whole time. Everybody asks us how we make our special Barbecue sauce and they have no idea how it's made! We won't tell them either as it is better to keep it a business secret... The recipe comes straight from this book!

This was by far the best purchase I made on amazon this year. I enjoyed watching the DVD's that covered far more than I expected.
I have always wanted to have my own restaurant, but never have been able to get it together. The trailer food business is more my thing, as I can leave it parked in my backyard when I don't want to sell. I had trouble finding information on the subject of mobile food vending and I wish I would have seen this course earlier. It has taught me a lot about this business. The film showed interesting background info and a lot of food being prepared for resale. The ribs looked delicious and I now always cook my ribs this way. Watching the procedure is like being there and much better than just reading about it...
The book is easy to follow and covers pretty much everything I needed to know. I am not much of a chef, but people were all impressed by the food I prepared the way it is described in the book. I fed over 300 people in one day by myself at our block party and made good money doing it. This guide was very helpful to me in my rural area. It also made me feel like I can actually put a business like this together in my spare time.
