I found this an amusing, endearing story. When I started it and read, "Terry Trackhoe takes a wild ride..." this immediately put me on notice that what you had in store for the little ones (and big ones who read with their children) would be full of action and energy to keep them entertained. The plot is good - that something/someone is lost theme and we must find it/him/her, and especially where he is the smallest machine of the lot, and therefore vulnerable - but even more so, because it's a dark night with a dark forest surrounding him. The personification of machines like diggers and trucks have always been a hit with children and here where you include the underlying element of values to help youngsters appreciate some of the issues which can affect them - including the ones which are taken for granted because of their simplicity - makes this story even more worthwhile. The family context of the story also gives the book a nice, warm feel to it. I think small children will be fascinated with this book.
