4-Wheel Freedom: The Art Of Off-Road Driving Review

4-Wheel Freedom: The Art Of Off-Road Driving
Average Reviews:

This book is a basic introduction to driving off-road. If you don't know what a locker is, how it works or why you might want one for off-road use, you'll find the answers in this book. On the other hand, if you've decided to save money on a locker by welding the spider gears together in your garage, this is not the book for you.
Having said that, I think it's a very good introduction and I knocked off one star for its only fault -- I found the organization a bit strange. If you read through the book cover-to-cover though, you'll know where to find what you need in the book. I'd give it four and a half stars if I could.
On Amazon's recommendation, I bought this book with The Off-Road 4-Wheel Drive Book by Jack Jackson, which is a very different animal. Jackson's book is for hard-core expeditions more than recreational off-roading. Many paragraphs start with sentences like, "As I forded a raging river during the rainy season in Pakistan, the engine suddenly stalled." If you're planning on crossing the Sahara, I'd recommend Jackson's book for you. Even if you're not, he does give good ideas for tough situations and you know you're getting advice that's been tested off-road in some of the worst conditions imaginable.
The bottom line: if you're just starting out, buy DeLong's book alone. If you find yourself venturing off-road more and more and you'd like to be more independent, buy Jackson's book as a follow-up.

I bought this for my 2009 Jeep Wrangler and with the standard size spare tire on the trunk can only be opened about 6 inches because the thing doesn't drop low enough, but aside from that the thing's great, very sturdy and seems like it will hold up all right.

Specifically designed for vehicles with externally mounted spare tires, the Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack allows you to carry your bicycles securely and avoid the hassles of piled bikes or high threshold rooftop mounts. Fitting vehicles with an external spare tire and a 2-inch trailer hitch, the Allen Deluxe Hitch Mount Rack is both easy to operate and super secure for your bikes. Constructed out of steel with a durable black powder finish, the rack is built to last and is backed up by a lifetime warranty by Allen.
The Allen rack boasts a patented tie-down system and individually cradles up to four bikes in the 22-inch carry arms. A separate tie down strap is included with the rack and eliminates lower bike movement completely. As easy to install as it is to use, the rack sets up in less than 5 minutes with a no-wobble bolt that holds it still within the hitch. When the rack is not in use, the carry arms quickly drop out of the way and fold down flat with a patented single pin mechanism and the rack tilts up to allow easy access to the lift gate.

About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three-dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Curt 18115 Roof Mounted Cargo Rack Review

Curt 18115 Roof Mounted Cargo Rack

I received the rack recently and ound it to be good quality and good looking for what it is. I don't really understand the previous reviewer's complaint. The rack is black and looks like a black rack. I'm not sure what else is expected. As far as quality, I would not say it is upper end, but I would reserve that designation for a heavy duty rack designed to hold a lot of weight. This is a light duty rack that will hold suitcases camping equipment etc. just fine. A nice aspect of this is that it is light enough that it is easy to put on and take off if you do not want it on your vehicle all of the time. Plus, for the price, I think it is an exceptional buy so long as you buy it within its use constraints.Follow-up: I have had the rack for a few months now and am very happy with it. I have found that there is a little added wind noice when driving, but it is only noticable if there is no other sound in the car (which is very seldom). I like it enough that I recently purchased the rack extender. I have an Acadia and just the basic rack fits fine, but looks a little funny to me because it is fairly short compared to the length of the roof. Getting the extension makes it look better fitted and provides more room for carrying items.
