Great book for a peek into how Florida used to be. Brought back memories in each chapter and highly recommend this book to nostalgia buffs.

With the arrival of the twentieth century, Americans continued in the pioneering spirit of their forebears and looked upon the automobile as a new way to explore the unknown. Thousands of Americans packed their tents in the backs of their cars and set out to enjoy the back roads of the United States. Carrying extra gasoline in five-gallon cans, plenty of canned food, and extra tires strapped to the fenders, these intrepid souls began an exploration of the North American continent with a thoroughness that put Lewis and Clark to shame. These tourists became the symbol of another "NewGeneration" of Americans, restless, adventuresome, and filled with boundless curiosity. These were the "Tin Can" tourists. In 1919, the official organization of Tin Can Tourists of the World was formed in Tampa, and the group held two meetingsannually until disbanding in 1977. Early on, residents of Florida recognized the potential economic impact of the Tin Canners on the state, and the movement to improve roads and provide accommodations and amusements to these seasonal travelers flourished. By 1930, Florida had built more than 3,000 miles of paved roads, and campsites, roadside motels, and exotic animal parks could be found along most major thoroughfares.

Everyone wants to leave the rat race and try their own dreams and Carve Your Own Road, was written to help us do just that. It is based on the theory, Mindset on Clarity, which states picturing yourself doing successful things build the same neural pathways as doing them.
Jennifer and Joe Remling practice what they preach and the first part of the book is how they took the leap and realized their dreams using the Mindset of Clarity theory. A interesting and inspiring story, it sets the right tone to lead into the practical instructions of the theory.
Mindset of Clarity is in itself simple and Jennifer and Joe do a great job breaking down each step so anyone can understand. The instructions are enriched by real life stories of people who accomplished their dreams, which are weaved seamlessly into the text.
The only confusing part is the fact that some real life stories were stuck in-between the first part, which was Jennifer and Joe's story, and the instructions on the Mindset of Clarity. Since real life stories are so expertly meshed in the first and second part, the adding of a bulk of extra stories breaks up the otherwise great flow.

You won't be disappointed! I have been a huge fan of Bruce Littlefield's witty & insightful writing for a long time and couldn't believe my luck when I saw he was the author of this beautiful book. The photographs are accompanied by really interesting stories about what people have done with these cool traveling objects of art. It features trailers from all over the world and gave me great decorating ideas for my own house. This would make a wonderful Christmas gift.

David Winick is an amazing craftsman! Yes, I'm biased as I am a proud owner of a Winick Bambi, but I highly recommend this book be added to your collection. Similar to his outstanding work on Airstreams, those sleek, iconic American gems rolling down the road, this book is beautifully presented and is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in Airstreams, and especially for anyone contemplating their own renovation. David provides terrific before & after photos and shares his knowledge of taking trailers through the resto process. I especially love his brutal honesty when he says something is, "butt ugly", and therefore should be crafted into something more palpable (dinette & refrigerator). You will not be disappointed in this book!

Few shapes rolling down the highway are as instantly recognizable as silver Airstream trailer homes. With over 200 sparkling color images and engaging text, this book presents David Winick's adventure re-creating custom-built Airstream home trailers that date from1948 to 2007, including his 75th Anniversary Bambi trailer. The challenge of making functional and beautiful small living spaces helped drive the restoration work. Learn the process, beginning with empty shells and ending with rolling Airstream art. This book will enlighten the growing legion of Airstream aficionados, architects and designers with a passion for small space living, and all who have ever camped or admired an Airstream.

Trailer Trash: The World of Trailers & Mobile Homes in the Southwest Review

Trailer Trash: The World of Trailers and Mobile Homes in the Southwest
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Remember all those mobile home monstrosities that used to roam the highways in the 50's and 60's? The ones with all the fancy "space-age" angles and windows? Well, not all of them ended up being recycled as Toyotas and Bob Moore has done a yeoman's job of finding examples of them (or their remains) all over the place in the Southwest.
Bob photographed each one and then researched what they looked like when they were new, using original materials from (many long-defunct) manufacturers. As you go through the book, the left-facing page shows an advertisement for a new copy of the trailer and on the right-facing page is Bob's photo of the derelict. It makes you laugh, shake your head, and generally ponder the mortality of all things on this good earth.
The last part of the book contains trailer advertisements of many kinds including split-level designs and other innovations. Accessories are also featured in this section.
Bob's text - like all of his writing - is humorous as well as insightful, and is scattered throughout the book. You will not be disappointed.

This book is essential for any fan of vintage campers. It has so much more than the story of Airstreams with coverage of many varities, both unique and common. Great photos on every page, with enough text to describe without a lot of needless details. Keister is on target with the vintage trailer hobby. If you are not a trailer collector, you might be after this book.

Vintage and modern-day photographs and advertisements add depth to Silver Palaces: America's Streamlined Trailers, a must-have book for this fall. It is historically significant for those who suffer from wanderlust, some fulfilled by owning and traveling with a "silver palace," or perhaps owning an older model that's been rebuilt and refurbished. With a simple, historical beginning, the streamlined trailer got its start. There were challenges in making mobile spaces for living-could anyone make a self-contained streamlined trailer complete with full hookups? After World War II, housecars and motorhomes were seen everywhere-a result of aluminum becoming available for trailers. Once these silver palaces were on the road, RVs and travel associations became popular . . . and well, the end of the highway was never in sight. Doug Keister has photographed fourteen award-winning, critically acclaimed books. His credits with Gibbs Smith, Publisher, include Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography and Classic Cottages: Simple, Romantic Homes as well as Fernando's Gift (El Regalo de Fernando), a Sierra Club Book for Children. Doug lives in Chico, California.

This coffee table book is a great gift - striking images, an original topic, really interesting text, and it's reasonably priced. The book follows the inventor of the Airstream, an eccentric wanderer named Wally Byam, as he spreads his gospel ("Adventure is where you find it, any place, every place, except at home in the rocking chair.") and organizes Airstream caravans around America and around the planet. We see these Zelig-like aluminum torpedoes with every famous backdrop: the Egyptian pyramids, rice fields in Thailand, the leaning tower of Pisa, and Red Square in communist USSR. The photos are at once kitschy and nostalgic and hokey and beautiful, and the layout of the book allows each image to really resonate before leading you to another page or chapter in the life of Wally Byam's "land yacht." A terrific piece of Americana, and a great, reasonable find...

Sleek and shiny, Airstream trailers have been turning heads on the highways since they first started caravanning across America in the 1930s. These "aluminum skinned, gleaming silver bullets" are currently enjoying a revival in popularity. Praised for their clean lines and timeless aesthetic, movie stars and design buffs are snapping up these vintage beauties. Airstreamequal parts travelogue, cultural history, and biography of Wally Byam, Airstream's charismatic inventorcelebrates the trailer's enduring appeal as an icon of simple, aerodynamic living. A dazzling array of images tell the story of how Byam, the father of modern trailer travel, created less a product than an entire culture. From the Eiffel Tower to the pyramids of Giza, from the Acropolis to the Golden Gate Bridge, Airstream caravans continue to travel to the far reaches of the earth. Amazing photographs from the Airstream archives document this metallic nomad's significant place in the history of design, from its streamlined origins to its current vogue. Airstream has always been synonymous with the freedom of the open road. Today the dream lives on.

Lewis, Haddon, and Walker's book was purchased largely on impulse based on the cover, since there weren't any posted reviews. I'm extremely pleased to say that the book has exceeded my expectations. Often trailer books neglect to pay proper attention to interiors. I'm happy to say that that is not the case with this book. Each trailer has at least one exterior photograph, and multiple interior shots, each showcasing the owner's aesthetic. The title promises "an inspirational guide to retro-style caravans," and that is certainly what it delivers. Those who own travel trailers will feel inspired to renovate them, and those who don't will feel compelled to find one.

The Sporting Road: Travels Across America in an Airstream Trailer--with Fly Rod, Shotgun, and a Yellow Lab Named Sweetzer Review

The Sporting Road: Travels Across America in an Airstream Trailer--with Fly Rod, Shotgun, and a Yellow Lab Named Sweetzer
Average Reviews:

If you've ever thought about a fisherman's life on the banks of a trout stream or knee-deep in the Bahamian surf, or just contemplated why the seasons change colors, you might want to hitch a ride with Jim Fergus.
The self-described "hook-and-bullet hack" -- in fact, one of the most thoughtful hunting and fishing writers in America, a field editor for Sports Afield magazine -- travels "The Sporting Road" like Kerouac with a fly rod and a 12-gauge, where every stream is a stream of consciousness. As you cruise the blue highways from Washington to Florida, Fergus muses about hunters' patient wives, sharptail grouse, bamboo fly-rods, the coming of snow, bonefishing, Native American culture, lives worth living, the perils facing small towns, good dogs and good friends. There's a certain poetry that emanates from somewhere deep down, an echo of a primitive time, brought up-to-date by Airstream trailers, Coleman grills and, for better or worse, Eddie Bauer.
This is a good book for non-hunters and non-anglers, the most militant of whom assume avid sportsmen have little conscience or intellect. Fergus proves otherwise. He is an eloquent spokesman for the sporting life, not defensive and clearly thoughtful. If you've ever wanted to understand the allure of frigid mornings in high-plains cornfields, or soggy nights on the banks of an unknown river, or why a hunter would drive for two days for a fleeting glimpse of a bird too small for dinner on its own, read "The Sporting Road."

Trailer Travel: A Visual History of Mobile America Review

Trailer Travel: A Visual History of Mobile America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book brings together a wonderful collection of visual images of travel trailers from the late 1920s through the 1950s. The images come from vintage photographs, publicity brochures, and other publications. A majority of the materials come from the collections of the University of Southern California, the Auto Club of Southern California, and Vintage Vacations (a California travel trailer restoration company). The quality of the image reproduction is excellent making this book a genuine feast for the eyes.
Although subtitled "A Visual History Of Mobile America," the majority of pictures are from California with the rest of the country only sketchily represented if at all. Florida is the only other state to have more than one or two pictures included.
The book has eight chapters. Each begins with one page of text consisting of three paragraphs. The rest of the chapters are illustrations with captions and quotes. The first chapter "Motor Camping" has some of the earliest photos and portrays the beginnings of the travel trailer craze. The second chapter "Selling The dream" contains a collection of illustrations from brochures and advertisements. "Wish You Were Here," the third chapter, is a collection of postcards both humorous and illustrative. The fourth chapter "Trailer Shows" contains pictures from various California trailer shows. Pictures of the latest trailer designs are often enhanced by including attractive female models. "Take A Look Inside" is the next chapter which portrays the interior furnishings of travel trailers. Again attractive female models often enhance the photos. "I've Got This Idea" is a chapter that captures some of the more inventive and original travel trailer designs. A whole chapter is devoted to "Trailer Logos." It was in this chapter that I found the only reference to my 1948 trailer made in Alma, Michigan.
The book ends with a chapter on "Teardrops," compact trailers with outdoor kitchens built into a back hatch. A one page bibliography provides both current and historic books and articles for further reading. A joyful coffee table book, light on text, but very rich on illustrations, that is eye candy for the trailer park crowd.

Ready to Roll: A Celebration of the Classic American Travel Trailer Review

Ready to Roll: A Celebration of the Classic American Travel Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An architect and a photographer co-authored this classic mix of pix and text that rolls us down the American back roads in high style. From the early almost-train cars manufactured for the wealthy, to the poor man's alternative --- "Sleep in Your Car," one ad suggests --- we are drawn along by the fantasy of life fully lived away from home, a fantasy that could only have taken root in America, where roads and cars grew up together in serendipitous symbiosis.
Before the metal bodies and custom interiors, there had been the Conestoga wagons and, before that, the wooden gypsy vardos of old Europe. Sheepherders had "arks" made for crawling across the lonesome prairie, precursors to "tin can tourism" that attracted freedom-loving Americans almost as soon as they discovered the practicality of the auto itself.
From the 1930s onward, the question was not if they would buy it but what shape they would purchase, as independent companies vied for a market share, assembling campers shaped like teardrops, bread loaves and fantastical avian forms lifted from the burgeoning airplane industry.
Today's RVers owe much to Wally Byam, a true fanatic whose conception of a trailer accessible to the average middle-class family resulted in the Airstream, arguably the finest development of the pull-along format. With wood paneled mod cons within and an aerodynamic metal bullet exterior, the Airstream divorced trailering from the Oakie image and spawned many imitators. While confections like the Curtiss Aerocar and Pierce Arrow's faux railcar sought the aristocratic end of the market, and utilitarian itsy-bitsy tent-trailer combos attracted the low budget traveler, Airstream sat doggedly in the middle, offering class, ease of hauling and fine workmanship at an affordable price. "Today, more than four decades after his death in 1962, Byam's basic Airstream design continues to roll off the Jackson Center production lines, still widely regarded as the Rolls-Royce of trailers, and still inspiring imitations."
For nearly fifty years in the heyday of over-the-road vacationing, there was a Very Large Array of metal boxes on wheels, with names like Comet, Gypsy Wagon, Spartanette and Airfloat, and some more durable brands like Shasta. Because these ephemeral blips on the trailering screen were often handcrafted and built, remarkably, to last, many are still rolling or at least set up on blocks in mint condition, alluringly photogenic.
Gellner and Keister sought them out and tastefully snapped their innards and their outer skins, along with the cars that pull them. Where the snowbirds flock, these metal bubbles proliferate, often hauled by cars of equal interest to collectors. Now there's a new craze, and why are we not surprised --- that of building "vintage" campers, look-alikes to the old timey road runners of the early 20th century. Is this true "camp" or what?
Peering inside these metal marvels, via the camera's eye, we get a feeling for what was considered essential to the traveler in times past: parquet flooring, lounge chairs, recessed doors and plastic laminate kitchen counters, the latest thing. Beginning as a simple imitation of home interior design, trailer construction soon became a playground for experimentation in the technology of the tiny, the art of making things work smoothly in cramped quarters without skinning knuckles or having to sleep in a ball.
Like millions of Americans, I've followed the camper craze, the boondoggling and midnight interstate rest area getaways. I've moved with the carnival where homes on wheels have to be durable for the weekly hops. Maybe when I retire I'll look for a campsite at Slab City in California or Quartzite, Arizona.
If you love this book, then you're the guy for me. You and I could hit the high spots --- starting at Braden's Castle in Reno (that's where we'll get married), then on to Shady Dell in Bisbee, Arizona, where overnight guests can stay in vintage trailers. We'll honeymoon there in the Spartan Royal Mansion.
--- Reviewed by Barbara Bamberger Scott

Americans in search of family oriented domestic travel, safe and inexpensive, are buying trailers and RVs in record numbers. At the same time-with fantasies of Lauren Bacall sipping an extra-dry Gibson against a gleaming metal doorway in Palm Springs and Lucy and Desi's madcap Long, Long Trailer trip-they crave the vanished luxury and quirkiness of antique auto trailers. Those simpler, slower days of freedom and security are being recaptured in trailers from all eras, rescued and restored as living, road-ready Americana. Ready to Roll, with more than 300 color photographs, taps into this trend in gloriously illustrated and insightfully chronicled retro style. Here is the complete evolution of the trailer, from the utilitarian Covered Wagon to the aristocratic Airstream and Aerocar Land Yacht to the homemade Hammer Blows of the Depression. Here too are the people who drove these cherished chariots and increasingly lived in them in trailer parks, from the stereotypically seedy to the likes of Bing Crosby's exclusive Blue Skies Trailer Village. The amazing camaraderie of groups like the Tin Can Tourists marks the trailer phenomenon as a major segment of American consciousness and history.

Another Douglas Keister book full of high quality photography and great reading. For the teardrop purists there may be some trailers covered that you don't like but for everyone else, you'll appreciate the coverage of the smaller canned-ham trailers.

Buckle up as Douglas Keister takes you for a decidedly retro ride in the world of diminutive travel trailers in Teardrops and Tiny Trailers. The demand for vintage trailers-the smaller the better-has risen dramatically in recent years, with the most in-demand trailers being "teardrops," first manufactured in the 1930s and containing just indoor sleeping space and an outdoor exterior kitchen. Also profiled in the book are "canned ham" trailers, whose shape resembles the profile of a can of ham; small-size examples of America's most beloved vintage trailer, the Airstream; miniscule gypsy caravans in Europe; and fiberglass trailers made in Canada. Two hundred color photographs showcase these trailers' sleek exteriors, retro-styled interiors, and, in many cases, the restored classic cars that tow them. Teardrops and Tiny Trailers includes a resource section chock-full of places to locate vintage trailers, clubs to join, and rallies to attend. (20080807)
