He is convinced that his golden retriever Maggie is possessed by the spirit of his ex-wife Mary. He lives in a run down trailer park, yet he convinced that he is incredibly wealthy. Well, the dog needs help, so Allie takes on the case. While working with the dog at Rudy's trailer, she gets away and comes back with a human arm bone. Rudy is brought in for questioning, and Allie takes care of Maggie while he is at the police station. He is released in the early hours of the next morning and wants his dog back. Allie promises to return him early in the morning and goes back to sleep. She arrives at the trailer park to find him murdered and herself a suspect. It turns out that Rudy was rich, his ex isn't dead, and he left all his money to the dog with the condition that Allie find a suitable home for her.
I have been looking forward to the next book in this series and I was not disappointed. Although Allie's romance with the dog phobic Russell detracted from the story somewhat, it was an excellent addition to the series.

Old World Murder (A Chloe Ellefson Mystery) Review

(More customer reviews)Kathleen Ernst's first adult novel is a great read. Chloe Ellefson is a newly hired curator at Old World Wisconsin, an actual pioneer living history museum in the Kettle Moraine area of Wisconsin. She starts off not only with the challenge of putting to order the museum's artifact collections, but also putting her personal life to order after the break-up of a difficult romance. Add to that some difficult staff supervisors, missing artifacts, and even possible murders to deal with. You can easily picture the museum settings of lanes leading to pioneer homes and log cabins, and settlers in period clothing working in the homes and fields. The settings and characters are beautifully developed. The plot has many interesting twists and turns. Throw in some humor and lots of mystery, adventure, and personal challenges, and you have a great read. Towards the end, I had to stay up way past my bedtime to find out "who done it." I hope another Chloe Ellefson book is in the making. I can't wait to find out what happens next. Charlotte Shirven

September Fair (The Murder-By-Month Mysteries) Review

(More customer reviews)A beauty contestant, competing in the "Milkfed Mary" pageant, is murdered while having her likeness sculpted in butter. Who can resist a premise like that? I don't often laugh out loud when reading mysteries, but I did during this one. Lourey's humor is dry and irreverent, just the way I like it, and her writing is crisp and engaging. The mystery kept me guessing until the end.

Undercover in High Heels Review

(More customer reviews)Undercover in High Heels is a very fun and humorous mystery. The plot is simple enough and the mystery was very obvious, but what really makes this book is the great characters.
Maddie is spunky, tenacious, and great fun. She certainly isn't qualified for the roll she assumes, which causes her to stumble through the mysteries and mostly solves them by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, this adds to the overall humor of the book. All the secondary characters are also great. Jack Ramirez is a sexy and realistic character who cares about Maddie, even if he isn't sure how to deal with her antics. Dana, Maddie's best friend, is a sex addict trying to get help for her addiction which adds for some funny situations and moments. We also get to see more into the Tabloid reporter, Felix. He is the mysterious character who Maddie isn't quite sure how to react to. Maddie thinks she dislikes Felix, but it seems more like she doesn't wish to accept that she does actually like him. I am waiting to see what happens between Felix and Maddie, as there is some tension between the two that hopefully will be explored in later novels.
Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I am really liking this series. Granted, there are some incidents within this book that seems too convenient and sometimes not realistic, but the lightheartedness this book is going for seems to make it work. So if you are looking for a simple romantic-mystery with a delicious guy, then I highly recommend Undercover in High Heels for a nice lazy weekend.

Mourning Gloria (China Bayles Mystery) Review

I'm a fan of the China Bayles mysteries and always enjoy visiting China's herb shop, Thyme & Seasons, in the fictional town of Pecan Springs with its cast of eclectic residents. In this book, I like how Albert develops China as a parent as her stepson Brian gets older and she adjusts to the new challenges of raising her 11-year-old niece, Caitlin, as well as the development of other characters such as that of China's friend Donna as she deals with the return of her irresponsible sister who causes trouble when she returns to the family farm. Another story line introduced is that of the engagement of police chief Sheila Dawson to Sheriff Blackie Blackwell, and their realization that one of them will need to step down from his or her position in order for a marriage to work which will make for an interesting topic in future books.
Overall I did like this book and appreciated that it did hold my interest from beginning to end and left me anticipating the next one in the series.
