(More customer reviews)I am an O-Scale model railroader and was quite excited that this book on the subject of Intermodal Railroading was coming out! I just received it today and was not disappointed!
Let me tell you it is an excellent resource with loads of photos and historical information with some never been published before. The ideas generated from this book would keep any model railroader whose interests on this subject intrigued for a long time! This book would be an excellent companion to Jeff Wilson's book "Modeling Intermodal Railroads" published by Kalambach Books. Good job by Brian Solomon.

This richly illustrated history chronicles one of the most revolutionary developments in freight railroading during the twentieth century: intermodal shipping, or the use of containers to move cargo between trains, trucks, and oceangoing vessels. It was a development that transformed the movement of freight around the world, with an almost incalculable impact on American industry.

Intermodal railroading in North America begins tentatively, with attempts at piggybacking in the 1930s, before moving on to more serious developments in the period from World War II through the 1960s, notably by Canadian Pacific and the New Haven and Southern Pacific railroads. After looking at early intermodal technology and traffic, particularly the formation of pioneering equipment manufacturer and provider TTX, author Brian Solomon turns to the contemporary period. His account of mighty changes in North American shipping ranges from the implications of deregulation and various railroad mergers, to the emergence of partnerships between railroads and trucking and shipping firms. In addition to railroads like Conrail, BNSF, and CSX, this comprehensive history features trucking, freight delivery, and forwarding firms such as J. B. Hunt,Sea-Land, Maersk, and K-Line. It also considers the importance of specialized modern rolling stock, motive power, loading equipment, and intermodal hubs including South Kearney, Seattle, Long Beach, Oakland, and Houston.

(More customer reviews)Nancy Drew was asked to be in a movie about a crime she had solved in the past. During the making of the movie a series of unfortunate events occurred. So this book explains how Nancy Drew put all the clues together to explain the events that happend.
Personally, I liked the fact that the book kept you thinking on who the criminal(s) might be. What I did not particularly like was the irritating way that the problems kept happening one after the other.
Nancy Drew is my favorite character in the book. She is very intelligent and uses her brains to figure out all the problems.
What made me like her was that in one part of the book it says, "At first everyone thought it was part of the movie,but I recognized Chief McGinnis's voice." I think it takes a good detective to recognize those kind of things.
If you like mystery and a constantly changing story, then this book is a good choice for you.
After reading the book, I would wonder why some people commit silly crimes.
This is a great book. It is one of those books that has all of the elements of a good mystery book. It is easy to read, keeps you guessing and can be enjoyed by all ages of people that like a good mystery.

I'm a detective,not an actor, so who would think I'd be involved in a crime both offscreen and on? A producer has come to River Heights to film a reenactment of the heist that gave our town it's name, and he thinks I'm perfect for the part of Esther, the sister of the thieving Rackham boys. So I figure, why not give it a try? But once the cameras start rolling, the trouble begins. Food poisoning. Broken generators. And worse! If I don't sniff out some suspects soon, this might be my final act.

(More customer reviews)It's fair to say that I inhaled Lynn's book in just a few hours. I adopted my horse, Taj Mahal (nee Famous General) from Lynn almost two years ago. While impressed with her and her organization from the beginning, my admiration has only grown. For anyone thinking about buying a horse, spend a few bucks (some of the proceeds go towards LOPE) and read this book, and then consider adopting a retired racehorse. As Lynn points out, once the steroids and excitement of the track are out of their systems, Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses that have lived that life seem to easily (and, I believe for many of them, greatfully) give up that life and are happy to go on doing pretty much whatever riding discipline their new owners may choose. They are smart, they've got great characters, and I have found them (three of my own, plus many others) to be ready, willing, able, and, most important, happy to do whatever job you may have for them.
What I found particularly special about this book was Lynn's willingness to share her own fears, worries, and self-doubts as she started down the road of rescuing these horses. In my experience, many horsepeople, men and women alike, seem to have a need to "know it all" and show others how well they can ride. What many of them seem to ignore is the importance of horsemanship -- the ability to really understand their horses and their needs, and be willing to be humble and kind to these animals who are so willing to give us whatever they can. When I began riding as an adult, I often felt alone, distanced, and ashamed as the often snooty and arrogant teens and adults paraded past me and my TB and QH with their warmbloods and their gorgeous tack, perfect riding gear, and riding skills. Over time, though, I learned that it wasn't the riding itself that I so enjoyed, it was the sense of oneness I felt with my horse when we did a really good leg yield, or got to the jump perfectly -- or when he came up to me in the stall and nuzzled me, glowing from his good grooming and good care, and obviously seemed happy and relaxed. When I read of Lynn's experiences, I remembered those times all over again, and realized how far I've come and how greatful I am for having gone through all that and come out the other side with happy, healthy horses and a respect and delight for them that far transcends any "perfect" ride I ever had.
Thank you Lynn, so much, for highlighting the horses and yourself. Yours is a horse book unlike any I've read before, and I will make sure all my horse friends enjoy it as much as I.

RV Rentals: A Vacationer's Guide Review

(More customer reviews)OK - I didn't read this entire book from cover to cover. It has, after all, some chapters which are pretty specific to narrowly defined groups of RV vacationers. I have read probably 90% of the book and have closely studied the first 100 pages or so (that is the portion dealing with preplanning and is the part of the planning process we are now dealing with). I haven't even glanced at the chapter about what to do at the end of the vacation (that is too far away to think about now) or the one on fly/drive vacations (because that isn't what we plan to do) or "RVing With Pets".
Whether you plan to rent an RV for a 2 month trip to Alaska or for a day at the football game, this is clearly THE BOOK to have. I started out knowing nothing about vacationing in an RV rental. This book has been our constant companion and handbook as we selected the RV to rent, the dealer to rent from and have worked on checklists of things to bring with us. Without a doubt "RV Rentals" has paid for itself at least 20 or 30 times over.
The book is divided into sections which roughly parallel the order of the planning process: basic decisions, preplanning details, living and traveling in an RV, and a section on "Special Considerations". In the appendixes there are tons of forms and worksheets and checklists and even a glossary of RVing terms.
I give the book 5 Stars because it is so thorough I can't imagine that anything of significance has been left out. At first it all seemed a little intimidating, but once you get into it the process is really clear and follows a simple, logical order. I can't think of any way this book could be improved!

Sniper Review

(More customer reviews)Ben is left in charge of a big cat refuge/preserve in California while his parents are off on safari in Africa. Ben is a teen with usual teen anxieties and now he has to run a preserve that the neighbors resent, supervise a crew of illegal aliens, and handle a few dozen big cats; full grown lions, tigers, panthers and a house cheetah. Since that's not enough stress for a teenager the author throws in a sniper, an unknown killer who is picking off the animals at night.
I read this book to be able to quiz my eleven year old as he read it and to be honest the book is pretty good. The characters are likeable and not saccharine, the boy...Ben...has realistic conflicts, and the animals seem to be realistically depicted. My eleven year old enjoyed the book, my thirteen year old read a few chapters and said he liked it.
My only critism is that the resolution comes out of the blue. The development of the identity of the culprit seems to happen abruptly in the last few chapters. There are no clues early on that foreshadow the ending. Real life may be that way but it does not make for a satisfactory ending in a novel.
That aside I would recommend it for young readers, challenging for an eleven year old, easy for a thirteen year old.
