Rookie Reiner: How to Survive and Thrive in the Show Pen Review

Rookie Reiner: How to Survive and Thrive in the Show Pen

There are tons of great books and DVDs about how to teach your horse reining maneuvers but I was really looking for a book about how to get into reining. This book gives great practical tips about how to get started, where to compete, pro vs non pro status, how to protect your non pro status, what to look for in a horse, signs of a show smart horse, when to upgrade your horse, common mistakes that beginners make in and out of the show ring, practical goal setting, etc. I now feel that I have a basic idea of where to start. I would love to find another book like this that goes even more in depth.

Building Your Dream Horse: Charles Wilhelm's Ultimate Foundation Training (Howell Equestrian Library) Review

Building Your Dream Horse: Charles Wilhelm's Ultimate Foundation Training (Howell Equestrian Library)

I was really looking forward to reading this book. I love Charles Wilhelm, I love his shows and he has taught me a lot just by watching him. I love his manner, his way of putting things across... and the fact that his step-by-step exercises work.
However, as he would admit, he is not a writer. This book is written by the co-author, and it shows. There's nothing in the book that's 'wrong', it's just that it lacks passion - it's kind of uninspired. I get the feeling that they set out to write 'yet another horse training book' and included all the necessary sections, and all in all it reads like that.
It's also fairly thin on content. For example, if you watch CW ride, his horses have really good flexibility and shoulder control. This is what I'm working towards with my 3 yr old. I find the section in the book .... and there's at most a paragraph ... ! Just not enough to really work from. Not enough specific exercises to even get you started.
I'm not really sure who the book is aimed at. Not for a beginning trainer like me. For starting to train your horse, you're much better off with Clinton Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship. The training methods are pretty much the same, but CA's gives you a whole lot more value for money - much clearer instruction, much more specific exercises, far better illustrated (you can really see what you're trying to achieve and how from the CA photo's).
I'm sorry I didn't like the book more. I'm still a big fan of the man and the method.

Human to Horseman: A Journey of Discovery, Growth, and Celebration Review

Human to Horseman: A Journey of Discovery, Growth, and Celebration

This book while documenting Rick's quest for knowledge really reflects the journey we must all take to become partners with the equines in our lives. It is not an easy path because we must not only be physically aware but psychologically in tune with our bodies as well as our horse's. In gaining the trust of these creatures we must also give trust so we can travel together and enjoy exploring the world together. I see more when riding my horse than when walking alone because I am viewing through his eyes and ears and am made aware of flora and fauna that would be invisible otherwise.I really enjoyed this book and having been a rider for over fifty years on hundreds of horses,I recommend it.

Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship (A Western Horseman Book) Review

Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship (A Western Horseman Book)

Pat Parelli's work is an excellent reference guide for equine enthusiasts at any stage of riding. While his writing style bears the signs of a real show-man, beyond the self-hype lie important ideas and techniques which have, repeatedly, proven exceedingly beneficial for all types of horse-people. He carefully (albeit often somewhat pompously) describes his programme, which consists first of ground-work and then of exercises to be performed in saddle. His very noble goal is to help humans to develop a subtle, understanding relationship with their equine partners.
Having read (and re-read) Parelli's work countless times in the past few months and having consistently applied his programme when "playing" (Parelli believes that humans should never "work" a horse) with my young Quarter Horse, I have witnessed enormous improvements in my horse's demeanour and, crucially, in the trust he has for me. By establishing dominance over my horse using the sensible, humane tactics Parelli recommends, I have made major progress en route to transforming this horse from a fearful, unridden colt into a willing, dependable, "true blue" mount.
I highly endorse Parelli's work; if his programme is applied with persistence, patience, and an open mind, the possibilities in the horse-human relationship are limitless.
