Complete Horse Care Manual Review

I was surprised to see some negative reviews about this book. I have to disagree with the people that thought it was "too basic". From all the complete horse care books and manuals I've read this one seemed to be the most comprehensive. It seems to me that most of the complete horse care books are aimed at readers fairly new to the subject. After all, if you had already had a horse for 5 years, it would be kind of late to check out how to take care of it... I found the easy-to-understand text very accommodating and not at all annoying. The pictures were excellent (especially the angles on the "fitting tack" section) and 18 pages of "symptoms, cause, treatment, and prevention" charts on common horse illnesses and injuries were very comprehensive. I originally got this book from the library and decided to purchase a copy to keep since I found it so much better than most of the other "complete" care books. BTW my other two favorites are "Riding for the Rest of us" by Jessica Jahiel, and "From the Ground up" by Brenda Imus.

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management Review

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management

This book helped immensely when I went from never having owned to owning 3 horses in western Washington State. On our 4 acres, we managed, with the help of this book, to not only find ways to work with space conflicts, but with a small budget. She offers many good suggestions to use everyday things, or common things in place of over-priced "horse" items, buckets, feed tubs, fencing, etc. Someone else commented on the "vagueness" of the book, but I never found that to be true, except that it didn't have phone numbers for your solutions. The point of the book in my opinion, is to show that with a little creativity, one can find perfectly good ways to do things in a small space and with a small budget. The book's suggestions also have held good through my moving horses down to CA and dealing with climate and weather changes. Very useful for the small budget/space horse person.

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities Review

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities

This book is a great resource for those wishing to build an equine facility - on any scale. However, this is not a guide book for horse ownership. If you board your horse somewhere, you do not need this book. If you are shopping for land and want to build your own horse place, then this book is perfect. If you are trying to figure out if your set up is safe and good for your horses, then get this book. If you are dedicated to making the best out of your land and your horse, then this book is the perfect resource, and it will help you decide if your land is right for horses or if horses are right for your land. Appropriate land use is important, and Cherry Hill shows how to incorporate horses into your land management practices - or is it incorporating good land management practices into your horsey haven? Her ideas and standards for barn design are also good industry standards. I highly recomend this book for architects and land planners who design equestrian homes/communities/barns.

Effective management requires knowledge, dedication, and a sincere interest in the well-being of horses. In this thoroughly updated second edition of her best-selling classic, Cherry Hill explains how to be a responsible steward of the land while providing horses with the best care possible. Drawing on decades of personal experience and recommendations from hands-on Extension agents throughout North America, Hill provides detailed, practical information designed to help readers develop and refine their "horsekeeping consciousness." She then explains how to maximize efficiency through careful planning of facilities and implementation of diligent management routines that keep horses happy, healthy, and safe. Well organized and generously illustrated with color photographs and instructive plan drawings, Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage is packed with information that horse owners need. Trailering Your Horse: A Visual Guide to Safe Training and Traveling Review

Trailering Your Horse: A Visual Guide to Safe Training and Traveling

I found this book extremely helpful. Even though I don't trailer my horse but a couple times a year, I thought that the information provided, was layed out well and the pictures were great. Besides learning how to safely trailer my horse, this book also taught me how to control my horse from the ground using voice commands, which I found handy whether I was putting her on a trailer or not. I have all of Cherry Hill's books and the pictures always make things quick and easy to follow. What horseperson has time to read wordy, time-consuming volumes on horsecare? Pictures tell a thousand words!

Cherry Hill, the best-selling author of Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage, the classic book that has guided thousands of horse owners in establishing farms, now shares her expertise in an important, related topic: equipping the horse farm. Hill provides in-depth information on every aspect of selecting, maintaining, and using the two most essential pieces of equipment — tractors and horse trailers. Accompanied by photographs and illustrations, she guides the reader through an evaluation of the options available in tractors, from horsepower and transmission options to tires and appearance. A checklist is included detailing what to look for if considering a used tractor. On trailers, readers will find the answers to all their questions, beginning with the kind of trucks and hookup required for towing various capacity trailers to selecting the appropriate truck hitch. The thorough discussion of trailers details options in floor plans, loading entry, suspension, and accomodations for both horses and owners: tack room, living quarters, windows and vents, lights, feeders, and more. Hill also discusses the smaller farm implements found on many horse farms, including loaders, discs, harrows, manure spreaders, mowers, post-hole diggers, hay balers, and wagons. Equipping Your Horse Farm is an authoritative, comprehensive handbook that every horse farmer will want to consult before investing in these critical items of farm equipment.
