Slow Dollar (Deborah Knott Mysteries) Review

Slow Dollar (Deborah Knott Mysteries)

I thought the last several books in the Deborah Knott series were pretty poor. Mechanical plots, dull characters, uninteresting and implausible mystery solutions. In one of them, I intuited the murdered from the beginning because s/he was given too much "air time" when s/he was introduced - a common giveaway for untalented mystery writers. I feared that Maron had run out of ideas and was just churning out books for the money.
Happily, "Slow Dollar" more than restores my faith. As is typical with Maron, the point is less the mystery than the characters. As others have indicated, the new characters in "Slow Dollar" are delightfully drawn and wonderfully real. They add more depth to the incredibly complex relationships within Deborah's family.
And I absolutely, positively LOVED the new relationship with Dwight. Yes, I consider myself to be on a first-name basis with these people; they are that real to me.
Thank you, Margaret Maron, from this grateful reader. You're back on track.

As The Table Turns Review

Cynn Chadwick has a knack for writing about family issues, emotions and fascinating characters. Her writing is sharp, humorous and emotional. Her gift for words is amazing and I get lost in the sometimes quirky and always interesting tales she weaves. Bravo! Another terrific book from Cynn Chadwick. And I'm not even the publisher!
Napping Porch Press has a winner here.

Dixie Stuart, Queen of the Southern Romance novel is forty-two, divorced, living in Manhattan, overweight, and custodial parent to an increasingly rebellious teenaged daughter. Against Dixie's will, her muse, Mary Nell Dupree, and heroine of each of Dixie's many books, has risen to knock out Dixie's seeming writer's block. When Dixie's sister calls from Virginia to beg Dixie to help with their aging father who is experiencing the onset of dementia, Dixie decides to pack up her daughter and return home. She arrives to find the once majestic farm of her childhood in as rapid decline as her dear daddy's mind. Dixie is determined to save both her father and his estate. As the Table Turns is a rollicky roll through the Shenandoah Valley which introduces us to a bevy of quirky Southern characters from Dixie's bosom-heaving bodice-ripping protagonist, her angst-ridden daughter, pesky ex-husband, dramatic sister, flamboyant brother, and demented daddy, but it is the reconnection with her once secret beau that has Dixie's own bosom heaving instead of her character's.

Numb: A Novel Review

Numb: A Novel
Average Reviews:

Sean Ferrell grabs you by the collar and forces you to feel the physical, psychological, and emotional pain that Numb is unable or unwilling to feel. He jars you with the bizarre, distracts you with pretty women, and while you're looking the other way, pounds nails into your heart. Unlike Numb, you feel each swing of the hammer. It's like Palahniuk meets Steinbeck in a lion cage. They sit, have coffee, and play chicken with a pairing knife. You are wondering who is going to lose a finger and if the other will sew it back on. The read is refreshing and real, and I can honestly say I can't wait for his next book.

Mama's Boy, Preacher's Son: A Memoir of Growing Up, Coming Out, and Changing America's Schools Review

Mama's Boy, Preacher's Son: A Memoir of Growing Up, Coming Out, and Changing America's Schools
Average Reviews:

Very few books I've read have touched me as deeply as Kevin Jenning's book "Mama's Boy, Preacher's Son." The author does an excellent job hooking the reader in with descriptions of life growing up in the South, with feelings of not being "normal."
From the depths of despair in a childhood gone wrong, Kevin managed to form an idea of how to change the climate in schools, and make them a better place for kids to learn. The things he went through as a student trying to get an education and putting up with bullying and harassment are amazing, and incredibly sad. This book should be required reading for teachers entering the field, so they understand why bullying and harassment isn't just "kids being kids" and can cause significant and lasting damage to the victims.

Nightland Review

Nightland
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Billy Keene and Will Striker, the main characters of Louis Owens' novel Nightland, are half-breed Cherokees living on failing ranches in New Mexico that their grandparents bought from the Mexican-Americans whose family had a grant from Spain [who took the land from Native Americans in the first place]. They're out hunting deer when a man [who we find out is of Pueblo Indian blood] falls from the sky and ends up skewered on a juniper tree. A suitcase full of money falls with him. Despite misgivings, Billy and Will keep the money. Then all hell breaks loose. Nightland is at heart a thriller, but as with Owens' other novels, it is also a musing on identity. Native American spirituality and the supernatural play a key role in the novel, so if suspension of disbelief is a problem for the potential reader, don't start this book. This is a much faster read than Bone Game and The Sharpest Sight. I found Nightland to be one of the highlights of my summer reading. Oh, and as if my opinion actually counted, I think Richard Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino should buy the rights to Nightland and make a movie. One of the pieces of sad news from this summer was that Louis Owens had taken his own life. He left us five great novels, including Nightland.

The terminology in this industry seems endless. So it's great to have something for reference when unfamiliar terms or phrases are brought into conversation. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to gain familiarity with the buzzwords of the industry. It seems like a perfect tool for college graduates who don't want to be caught off guard in a job interview. And it also is great for someone like me, who's been in the business for a while. Easy read.
Sincerely,
