Black Market Princess Review

I've read two books by this author. The first was a 1940's flick featuring a black sheep of a wealthy family who transforms herself into a female Philip Marlowe. This book features a wild woman who rises to the top of the Black Market. The hero, Denise, is funny and knows how to catch her audience off guard with her unpredictable outbursts and mania-inspired revelations. Some of the information seems almost too authentic...it makes you wonder if the author has a rap sheet. If you like books by Janet Evanovich, Carl Hiaissan or Elmore Leonard, you'll really enjoy Black Market Princess.

Meet Denise Rutledge. Uneducated. Unstable. A member of America's new upper class...Denise Rutledge can't have a normal life. Uneducated and severely bipolar, her only hope of escaping a minimum wage existence is to become a key player in a multi-billion dollar industry where mobsters, ministers, nonprofit organizations, and Fortune 1000 executives strike secret deals that often prove deadly. As she navigates the dark and perilous distribution channels, Denise must outwit a host of enemies, including a spiteful actress turned serial killer and a Miami liquidator who thinks he's Scarface. Her objective...to establish her own charity and rescue astrophysicist Avery Johnson, the love of her life whom she shot prior to entering a psychiatric ward, from a bad marriage.Based on actual events associated with the real Black Market, Denise's adventures explain how a select group of misfits is rising up to become America's new ruling class.

Sugar Daddy Review

Sugar Daddy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When awkward teenager Liberty Jones meets self-assured, loner Hardy Cates her life is changed forever. Liberty and her mother have just moved to a trailer home in Welcome, Texas. Hardy lives in the same trailer park with his mother and three siblings. Both the Cates the Jones families don't have much in the way of money, but their ties to their family make their lives complete. Liberty's mother works hard to support her daughter on her own, and when she becomes pregnant, Liberty steps in to help shoulder the extra burden. Likewise, Hardy also comes from a single parent home (his father is in prison) and he works hard outside the home to provide extra income for his family.
Liberty is going through puberty when she first meets Hardy and she falls for him hard. He is her constant advocate, helping her with tests, teaching her to play basketball, helping her see her own inner and outer beauty. But Hardy wants nothing more than to one day leave the sheltered trailer park life behind him and make something of his life. He is determined to not wind up like his father and he knows that falling in love with Liberty will only make it harder for him to go. To both of their dismay, he refuses to get involved with her and he walks away from Welcome and Liberty without turning back. Shortly after, Liberty loses her mother in an accident and is left to raise her two-year-old sister alone.
Forced to act as a single mother to her sister Carrington, Liberty makes sacrifice after sacrifice to ensure they are both fed, healthy, and happy. She sets out on a career path as a hair stylist and moves with Carrington to Houston to work at a prestigious salon. Once there, she meets Churchill Travis, a successful businessman who the other stylists tell her would make a perfect "sugar daddy." Liberty has never considered such an arrangement, but when Churchill takes a personal interest in her and offers her a live-in position as his assistant, she lets herself be swayed for the sake of her sister. Living with Churchill will give Carrington opportunities Liberty could never afford on her own. Soon Liberty has found love, happiness, and contentment in the Travis home and things are going well. But when Hardy steps back into her life after nearly 10 years, she has to decide if she's willing to sacrifice the happiness she's found for the future she'd always dreamed of.
I was skeptical when I found out Lisa Kleypas, one of the leading authors of historical romances, was going to be writing a contemporary novel. I mean, her historicals are so good--why ruin a good thing? Well, I'm here to admit that I was wrong. I forgive her for going the route of contemporary, and if they're all going to be this good, I say keep at it. Sugar Daddy was "unputdownable." I read it in six hours and stayed up until 3 in the morning to do so (and I have to go to work in the morning). But there was simply no other choice. I became absorbed in the characters, in the story, in the outcome and I just had to know how things were going to work out. Liberty Jones is a well-drawn character who develops from a shy, awkward teenager into a self-assured, confident guardian to her sister. She puts herself second to ensure that Carrington is well cared for and even sacrifices her own love life for the good of her family. When she finally finds someone to love, I was so happy for her, but then Hardy stepped back into her life and I had to wonder if she'd made the right choice. Hardy Cates was the stereotypical first love, but more than that he helped Liberty find her own womanhood. When she felt awkward and uncomfortable he put her at ease, and when she went through hard times, he picked her up. I wanted things to work for them, but at the same time it took Liberty so long to move on that I almost resented the easy way in which he walked back into her life. I've read enough romances that I can usually guess how they'll end (happily, of course), but Sugar Daddy's ending was a pleasant surprise for me. This story ranged from laugh out loud funny (the emu story) to heartwrenchingly romantic, and every emotion in between. Pick up Sugar Baby when you're in the mood for a stellar contemporary romance that will keep you on your toes, but make sure you have a few hours to spare because you won't want to put it down.

Hard Aground with Eddie Jones: Another Incomplete Idiot's Guide to Doing Stupid Stuff With Boats

Eddie Jones can laugh now, but the things that happened when he went sailing would have made me quit sailing forever. And I wonder about his wife and sons. Do they still dare go out with him? Eddie makes each disaster--mostly they happened due to a momentary lack of good judgment on his part--sound like fun. A great writer, a great book, even if you don't take to the sea.

Hard Aground with Eddie Jones is a collection of cruising and boating stories, offering a "stuck up" look at the underside of cruising and the frustrations we "land-cuffed" sailors experience when our plans for coastal exploration and tropical destinations run aground on the shoals of family, finances and failing health. These columns first appeared in Carolina Cruising and Coastal Cruising Magazine."If there is a better nautical writer when it comes to relationships and family interactions on the water than Eddie Jones, we don't know about them." -Claiborne Young, author of Cruising Guide to North Carolina"Thanks for your latest Hard Aground column, Eddie. Mel was wondering why I was laughing so early in the morning." -Tom Neale, Cruising Coast and Islands"Eddie has an excellent ear for words and is one of North Carolina's nautical treasures."-Dave Martin, Cruising World Magazine

Saylor's Triangle Review

Saylor's Triangle

I just moments ago completed reading Craig Bieber's fast-moving thriller, "Saylor's Triangle." And, I am still out of breath. The book is well-written, difficult to put down once you get started, and filled with non-stop, no-holds-barred action. However, be prepared to be tantalized and surprised by the unexpected. Bieber is a great story teller. For anyone who enjoys a good, exciting mystery, this book is a must read.

The Winds of Sonoma Review

The Winds of Sonoma
Average Reviews:

I'll be honest; I've never read a romance novel in my entire life. But I heard some good things about a new novel,The Winds of Sonoma, by author Nikki Arana, and thought I'd check it out. And I have to say, I wasn't disappointed in the least. The detailed characterizations and the smooth writing style were quite impressive for a first novel. Angelica Amante, a privileged young lawyer on the rise, finds her match in Antonio Perez, a dirt-poor Mexican immigrant working at her parent's ranch. It's a class-act story about class differences, and how true love can overcome any barrier - even prejudice. A spark of romance runs through a satisfying and very substantial story. Nikki Arana makes the unconventional possible, and the impossible, attainable. I truly look forward to reading the next novel by this talented new author.

This book will help all count their blessings and remember that family is most important, especially during the holidays. The author does a masterful job of helping the reader understand what it would be like for a child to go from unfortunate circumstances to a loving home. I recommend this book. I have enjoyed it, and my wife has enjoyed it every Christmas for the last six years.

The Higher Power of Lucky Review

The Higher Power of Lucky
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book for my 8 and 11 year old boys. And then I bought more for presents for my friends' kids.
The idea that some librarians are choosing to keep this book off the shelves due to the use of the word "scrotum" right at the beginning of the book is more offensive than the word. Reality check: my boys have lots of words for that part of the anatomy, it's about time they read the proper word used in context of another boy saying it.
Surprisingly, if it is the "word" that stuns people, then they haven't read the book and thought about how stunning it is to consider a child (Lucky) listening in on a variety of 12-step groups. But those two aspects, and all the rest of the "shocking" things that happen in this book, are all absolutely appropriate, and beautifully written, to make this book something special.
I highly recommend "Lucky", and I fully agree with the age suggestion assigned it (9-12). My 8yo thought it was awesome, but then, he is in the 4th grade. My 11yo loved it.
The reality is kids in this age range have all kinds of scary ideas and powerful curiosities. Being able to read about Lucky going through such things gave my kids the opportunity to think about and talk about all kinds of things. As a family, we thought this was an excellent book.
As for the librarians and teachers who think they don't want to have to give a vocabulary lesson on the word scrotum, ask them how many times they have heard boys in the 9-12 age range yell a variety of less savory words for that part of their anatomy. The scientifically correct word is always worth teaching.
Read it for yourself, and see.

Amphetamine King Review

Amphetamine King
Average Reviews:

I'm a big fan of true crime and of biographes/autobiographies. In Ampetamine king we get the life's story of a man who made his living as a meth cook. He shares a slice of life most of us will never know and likely wouldn't want to. I wouldn't want to walk in his shoes and I thank him for showing me a glimpse of what that would have been.
He could have used a ghost writer. It seemed like some of the impact of his story was dulled by the awkwardness of a 'first attempt' at writing a book. If you can get past that you may enjoy it. I did.

In his book, Gonzales provides snapshots of true-life accounts to eloquently describe the world in which he lived - from the humble beginnings of his childhood, to his life as a Drug Kingpin, to his transformation in State Prison. He goes into detail of how he perfected the manufacturing and distribution of amphetamines during the mid to late 1980's. His escapades include run-ins with infamous drug lords and mad men of various underground organizations. And of course, he discusses the key people involved in helping him rise from a Latino Texan minion to a convicted Drug Kingpin.

Velvet Sky Review

Velvet Sky

"Velvet Sky" by Rusty Van Reeves is a powerful and complex book that leads from one emotional crisis to another. I found the characters intriguing and really rounded but, I had a little trouble with the plot lines. It seems to be a bit confused at time, but all in all.... a very nice read.
Reeves' use of language is exceptional and his imagery is very well done. Lots of talent in this new writer - perhaps more editorial help could have woven the plot a little more clearly.
I would be interested in more from this author in the future - especially as he continues to work on his craft. A powerful debut!

After becoming a registered nurse and leaving my home in Iowa, I venture to Rock Springs, Wyoming living with several other single nurses in a former student nurse housing facility. The Five G's Plus Two is a moving story of the events that surrounded the creation of the Heagney Family. Emery, Audrey and the five children, Glen, Gregg, Gaynell, Guy and Greer. A cord of love intertwines throughout as everyone experiences joy, accomplishments, tears, disappointments and loss as death touches our lives. We find the evidence of strength is provided by the presence of the Holy Spirit in each of us. The story starts when Emery and I first meet - forty-eight years ago in Rock Springs, Wyoming. There are flash backs of our lives portraying the family life we grew up with. The importance of family life is disclosed with the birth of our first born, three years after we marry. This culminates our experiences of traveling from coast to coast following pipeline construction. The chronological events conclude summing up the present day activities of the family. The Five G's Plus Two should offer laughter, hope and help to an active family, recognizing they are not alone in their quest to be all they can be on this earth. I am the mother of the Five G's and the grandmother of eight lovely children as well. (Not a throw-a-way in the bunch!) My reason for writing this is simply responding to their request. I also have a 'burn' to relay the importance and responsibility of a family and the complexity required of a parent. As time continues and retirement becomes a part of our lives, we tell the children, "Lock your doors, you never know when we are coming!" Retirement lends opportunity to Em and I to volunteer our services in Drug Rehabilitations, Church building and Family Camps. This has been a life filled with tears, laughter and joy, concerns and rejoicing with the children reaching goals successfully. Although life deals it's own philosophy individually, our greatest t

Riding for the Blue: A Celebration of Horse Shows Review

Riding for the Blue: A Celebration of Horse Shows
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a beautiful book, with gorgeous photos and a funny and perceptive text showing why people love horses and why they take their sometimes magnificent, and sometimes not-so-magnificent but loved-just-the-same, beasts out in public to compete against others similarly afflicted with horse show fever.
Cindy Hale's text shows a mastery of words and imagery. More than that, though, her writing shows a true love and understanding of horses, of horse shows, and of why people and horses compete. She examines several disciplines, including hunters, western, dressage, and jumpers. She covers the arc of a horse show career, for both horses and riders, and gives justly due attention to the judges, trainers, grooms, braiders, night watchmen, and horse show moms who all contribute to making showing the unique and addictive experience it is. And, of course, she gives tribute to the horses without whose generosity and cooperation none of it would be possible.
The photographs that accompany the text are sharp, feeling, and insightful. Sharon Fibelkorn not only captures the beauty, spirit, and athleticism of the horses in each discipline, but also the emotions of the people riding and surrounding them.
This is a perfect book for anyone who loves horses and showing, and anyone who loves someone who loves horses and showing and wants to understand the answer to the question, "why on Earth do you put yourself through all that just for a little ribbon?"

I was anxious to read this book, not only because my cousin Judy is the

It is amazing to me that after all this time Judy was able to tell her

Turk through Prince William Sound as they managed to catch and research
these otters, while undergoing a multitude of problems along the way.
Judy and Turk are an exceptional couple who were only married a short time
