Writing a screenplay appeals to me as a writer of novels and short stories. Anyone who has read the more technical books on how to write screenplays -- and glazed over -- will appreciate the clarity and simplicity with which George Perez has presented his concept. He will teach you to turn a short story into a screenplay in easy steps. And why not? Look what Spielberg did with a Richard Matheson short story -- it became the movie "Duel" with Dennis Weaver. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get off to a good start writing screenplays.

Grow A Screenplay The Natural Way describes a method of writing a motion picture screenplay directly from a short story. The book is divided into three sections, which are: The Introduction; Part I, the story--contains the short story on which the screenplay is based; Part II, the screenplay--shows how a movie is written directly from the short story. In effect, the screenplay grows right out of the story! The market for this book is anyone and everyone who ever dreamed of writing a screenplay. Grow A Screenplay The Natural Way does something other script writing books do not. Other books tell the reader where to put a character's name and where to set the tab stops on the typewriter or computer. They talk about heroes and heroines, plot and structure, positive and negative space. However, those books do not model a method that the majority of inexperienced writers, attempting to write their first screenplay, can successfully follow. Grow A Screenplay The Natural Way will show you, step by step, how easy and fun it can be, with a little bit of work, to complete a motion picture screenplay-- without all the hassle and in less than half the time. With a copy of this book you will be able to stop dreaming and start writing, today!

Earth-Sheltered Houses: How to Build an Affordable... (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I went to some trouble to survey books centered on both underground or into rock dwellings, and also earth sheltered homes, and this book is the best I could find. It has proven to be everything I had hoped for.
This book deals with earth-sheltered homes, which are homes generally built on the ground, and then covered with natural dirt and growth on the roof only, or on the roof and the berms of earth piled against at least two of the sides after the fact of building.
This is a really excellent offering. 12 chapters, 4 appendices, and an annotated bibliography. A number of really nice color photographs on eight pages in the middle of the book, many black and white photos as well as really excellent understandable diagrams.
Take-aways include the need for extremely careful but not over the top load planning, radon as a factor to take seriously, and ANYONE CAN DO THIS.
The book covers waterproofing, insulation, and drainage, to include waste drainage where gravity rather than pumping is strongly recommended. It does not cover electrical and plumbing installation. It covers energy in relation to sunlight and windows and heat retention curtains, but does not include coverage of skylights (except as an energy loss factor), interior lights and other "plumbing.
The bottom line in the book is that a solid earth-sheltered house can be built for $10K to $20K inclusive of appliances, plumbing and so on, which makes it a lot cheaper and greatly more sustainable than a double-wide trailer home, and better in most respects than your average rambler.
With Peak Oil now upon on, the energy saving features of the earth-sheltered home are not to be taken lightly. The author document going without a need for heat from wood burning for almost an entire winter, and documents getting through any winter with 2-3 cords of wood. The home is cool in the summer without airconditioning, in part because of the natural respiration and evaporation of the earth roof with grass, moss, and wildflowers.
I want to end with praise for the publisher. Five or six times now I have bought boooks based on my interest in their content, only to find that New Society Publishers is the provider. They now rank with Wharton Publishing as one of my favored publishers, and I will be keeping an eye out for anything bearing their imprint.

An earth-sheltered, earth-roofed home has the least impact upon the land of all housing styles, leaving almost zero footprint on the planet.

Earth-Sheltered Houses is a practical guide for those who want to build their own underground home at moderate cost. It describes the benefits of sheltering a home with earth, including the added comfort and energy efficiency from the moderating influence of the earth on the home's temperature (keeping it warm in the winter and cool in the summer), along with the benefits of low maintenance and the protection against fire, sound, earthquake, and storm afforded by the earth. Extra benefits from adding an earth or other living roof option include greater longevity of the roof substrate, fine aesthetics, and environmental harmony.

The book covers all of the various construction techniques involved, including details on planning, excavation, footings, floor, walls, framing, roofing, waterproofing, insulation, and drainage. Specific methods appropriate for the inexperienced owner/builder are a particular focus and include:

Pouring one's own footings and/or floor
The use of dry-stacked (surface-bonded) concrete block walls
Post-and-beam framing
Plank-and-beam roofing
Drainage methods and self-adhesive waterproofing membranes

The time-tested, easy-to-learn construction techniques described in Earth-Sheltered Houses will enable readers to embark upon their own building projects with confidence, backed up by a comprehensive resources section that lists all the latest products such as waterproofing membranes, types of rigid insulation, and drainage products that will protect the building against water damage and heat loss.

Rob Roy is a former contractor with 27 years of experience and 12 previous books to his credit, including Cordwood Building and Timber Framing for the Rest of Us. An expert on underground building, he founded the Earthwood Building School in 1981 with his wife, Jaki, and is frequently a speaker at events throughout North America.

Richmond Noir (Akashic Noir) Review

Richmond Noir (Akashic Noir)

When my step-son Cody gave me this book in way of apologizing for what he did to my lawn (don't get me started), i was hesitant to believe that I would enjoy it. As a life-long Richmonder, I didnt believe that this town had anything in it worth writing about. I WAS WRONG. The stories contained within this volume are great, grimy gems that illuminate the under-side of this town with what my Uncle Otis used to call 'real panache.'
Actually, Uncle Otis would have loved some of the stories in this collection. He was a big reader. Used to scream about religion a lot, but mostly he liked reading.
Back to the book--what really makes the stories shine is that they're more than just blood and guts like your Jodi Picoults and Andre Dubus'. There's a depth to the material here. Not that they're not fun, too. Many of the stories contain both sexuality and violence.
It's a great collection put together by people as passionate about literature as they are about noir. I assume. These stories pack a lunch, and in that lunch they pack punches instead of chips.
As for Cody, if you see him, please tell him its safe to come on home. I liked the book enough that I've decided to let the lawn thing go.

The River City emerges as a hot spot for unseemly noir.

Brand-new stories by: Dean King, Laura Browder, Howard Owen, Yazmina Beverly, Tom De Haven, X.C. Atkins, Meagan J. Saunders, Anne Thomas Soffee, Clint McCown, Conrad Ashley Persons, Clay McLeod Chapman, Pir Rothenberg, David L. Robbins, Hermine Pinson, and Dennis Danvers.

FROM THE INTRODUCTION TO RICHMOND NOIR:

"In The Air-Conditioned Nightmare, Henry Miller tosses off a hard-bitten assessment of the City on the James: 'I would rather die in Richmond somehow,' he writes, 'though God knows Richmond has little enough to offer.' As editors, we like the dying part, and might point out that in its long history, Richmond, Virginia has offered up many of the disparate elements crucial to meaty noir. The city was born amid deception, conspiracy, and violence . . .

"These days, Richmond is a city of winter balls and garden parties on soft summer evenings, a city of private clubs where white-haired old gentlemen, with their martinis or mint juleps in hand, still genuflect in front of portraits of Robert E. Lee. It's also a city of brutal crime scenes and drug corners and okay-everybody-go-on-home-there's-nothing-more-to-see. It's a city of world-class ad agencies and law firms, a city of the FFV (First Families of Virginia) and a city of immigrants--from India, Vietnam, and Africa to Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. It's a city of finicky manners (you mustn't ever sneeze publicly in Richmond) and old-time neighborliness, and it's a city where you think twice about giving somebody the finger if they cut you off on the Powhite Parkway (that's pronounced Pow-hite, not Po-white, thank you very much) because you might get your head blown off by the shotgun on the rack . . ."

I love the fact that this novel about a serial killer blends suspense with fantasy, rare in a book of this type. The female characters are interesting, and the prose style is great. Maddox has a keen eye for details and an ear for effective, fast-moving dialogue.

Overall, an interesting story, but the main character is not as well-developed as I would like to see. There are many typos in the book I read, a library edition published by Thorndike Chives. The typos detract from the enjoyment of reading.

God in Concord (A Homer Kelly Mystery) Review

God in Concord (A Homer Kelly Mystery)
Average Reviews:

Jane Langton's Homer Kelly is one part absent-minded professor, one part Doctor Who (sans time travel) and one part...well, Homer Kelly. Suffering from JFS (Jessica Fletcher Syndrome), mystery and death seem to "sniff out" Homer, rather than the other way around.
The story is not just merely about scenic suburban life and the petty trifles of its inhabitants. That provides the narrative façade for an astute commentary regarding the politics of development/city planning, environmentalism and the dangers/benefits of nostalgia.
Langton's characters are vividly multi-dimensional, torn in their allegiances by both heart and mind. The author asks the reader not to pass immediate judgment, suggesting that the potential for villainy resides within us as well, under the right set of circumstances.
I think this is one of Langton's better books in the series. Highly recommended for Thoreau buffs and those readers familiar with Boston/Concord, Massachusetts.

Give Me Mountains For My Horses Review

Give Me Mountains For My Horses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tom Reed writes with lyrical passion about a subject he knows intimately -- horses and mountains. Specifically, horses and mountains in the great state of Wyoming. You don't have to be a horseman or an outdoorsman to enjoy this book. You just need to enjoy a good story written well. It's a highly personal story at times, but Tom never allows his raw emotions to get the bit in their teeth. All the same, he makes the reader feel what he feels vividly. This man is a lover and what he loves most is a good horse between his legs and a big mountain before his eyes. Throw in a starry night beside a campfire, a few beers and a griz or two for good measure, and it doesn't get any better. My only gripe about this book is it's too damned short. But then, isn't that the ultimate compliment?

DRAG STRIP Review

DRAG STRIP

In Panama City, Florida, Vincent Gambuzzo owns the exotic dance club Tiffany. To attain a little PR for the club and as a favor, Vincent sends his top attraction Sierra Lavotini to look very pretty and be pinched at the Dead Lakes Motor Speedway. Upcoming star Ruby Lee Diamond accompanies Sierra. However, the night turns rotten when a dirt track driver crashes into Sierra's car. The evening turns ugly when someone murders Ruby Lee.
Even more shocking, Sierra observed her "beau" Homicide Detective John Nailor fleeing from the scene of the corpse. Already blaming herself for the death of one of her "family", the betrayal by John shocks Sierra, who finds herself attracted to the cop. Not waiting around for the police to find the killer, Sierra begins her own brand of inquiries that place her in danger with only John to protect his woman.
DRAG STRIP, the second Lavotini mystery (see THE MIRACLE STRIP) is an entertaining blending of a police procedural with a Florida amateur sleuth tale. The story line is interesting, but the fun in this novel rests with the main character. Sierra is a zany amalgam of Catholic school guilt and exotic dancer zest that makes her a unique but cherished individual. Her relationship with John who loves her is beginning to simmer. The secondary cast adds that Florida frenzy frequently found in who-done-its set in the Sunshine State. Readers will look forward to the next Nancy Bartholomew book that hopefully will push forward the John-Sierra relationship to new heights.

Raising Mama: A Memoir Review

This is the story of the music, politics and culture during a seminal period of the ''baby boom'', 1958-1962. It's an often hilarious story told from a most unlikely point of view; a precocious child born to a dirt-poor Southern woman. RAISING MAMA is a memoir. The voice is from the point of view of a child who became virtually an adult at age ten. RAISING MAMA is a road trip. Larry Sullivan, the voice and lead character, attends eight schools in five states in five years, 1958-1962. His mother's favorite husband is a career criminal and, for Larry, reality is one surreal situation after another. RAISING MAMA is an American saga. It's a love story rivaling ROMEO & JULIET. It's TOM SAWYER in Jack Kerouac's world.

His mother's favorite husband is a career criminal and, for Larry, reality is one surreal situation after another. RAISING MAMA is an American saga. It's a love story rivaling ROMEO & JULIET. It's TOM SAWYER in Jack Kerouac's world. The stream of consciousness narration is a literate voice from the underclass. Larry and his mother, Dot, are Cherokee descendants and their life is a matriarchy in constant conflict with the dominant culture. Larry is from Memphis, Tennessee and watches Rock 'n Roll being born in his hometown. All women who have committed to a relationship, had a child or participated in the workforce will understand Dot's plight. Few will understand Dot's reaction to her circumstances; sometimes hilarious, but frequently tragic. The family is irrevocably affected by the Cold War as Larry's step-dad tries to go straight for once. There is even a brush with infamy as MAMA works for one night for one of Jack Ruby's businesses. The narration describes the late 1950's as they were; with their racial tensions, anti-Communism and the beginnings of Rock 'n Roll and the counter-culture.

John Vornholt really impressed me with this first rate teen thriller based on the tv show. This book didn't take me that long to read - thats only because I couldn't put it down. I strongly reccommend this to teens and Buffy fans.
It is about Buffy, Willow and Xander eager to take a break from slaying vampires and what-not so they take a trip to the carnival that's come to Sunnydale, only to find out the two sexiest carnies are actually werecoyotes!
Awesome book - don't let this fly by!

...In the year 2025,Net Force Explorer Andy Moore is asked to help the Cservanka Brothers Circus to program virtual animals and a few other things. As he gets closer to Papa Cservanka's granddaughter, Syeira, a vivacious and strong willed teenager, Andy finds strange things happening under the big top. As he begins exploring the strange events, he finds that the cyber-circus could be under the threat of a black market ring. Can Andy figure everything out before someone gets hurt... including him?
For a Young Adult book, "High Wire" is great for all teenagers. With a well-thought out plot, this story will please those looking for a good read. Mel Odom, the author, gives plenty of twists and turns, having the whole plot well balanced with mystery, excitement, love, and adventure. As for myself, since I love using the internet, find this Net Force story intriguing as the Net has no boundaries.
The character of Andy Moore is a fun main character. For a teenager, he's very smart and it's interesting how he figures out problems and comes up with remarkable plans. I also would love to read more about all of his Net Force Explorer friends, especially Matt Hunter and Mark Grideley, called the Squirt. And though she is only mentioned and she doesn't come out in the story, I would love to read a story about Megan O'Malley who's supposed to be a martial artist.

This book offers a veritable wealth of information for hunters, campers, fishermen and others who spend recreation time in the outdoors. I've used it to identify types of fish, to know how to build a fire in the rain, and to prepare food for overnight hikes. I'd give it 5 stars if it hadn't suggested one thing I consider very poor judgement--using prairie dogs as targets for practice. As a hunter and fisherman, I NEVER would take even a prairie dog's life needlessly... try a few clay pigeons instead.

What This River Keeps Review

WHAT THIS RIVER KEEPS, by Greg Schwipps is as fine a novel I
have read in years. Whether you are interested in nature,
fishing, family struggles, love of the land, this story will
not only hold your attention but speak to the very core of
your being. All of Schwipps' characters are believable, un-
forgettable and enduring. The main character, Ollie, is one
of the most genuine and universal characters in modern fiction.
His struggles as a son, friend and lover kept me turning
pages like no other book I know of. The writing throughtout
the novel never loses its edge and compells the reader's
attention on every page. For me, Schwipps ranks now among my
favorite writers such as Wallace Stegner, Annie Proux, Louise
Erdrich, and Ann Patchett among others. If you liked Ann
Patchett's PATRON SAINT OF LIARS or THE MAGICIAN'sASSISTANT,
you will LOVE WHAT THIS RIVER KEEPS. Schwipps is a gifted
writer who deserves to be read.
