I got this book in hopes that it would explain how to "read" a horse and what certain reactions or movements by horses meant, but it really doesn't at all. It really is just a very general book about the nature of horses based on what they would naturally do in the wild. If you're looking for specific information about training or riding or bonding with your horse, or reading him, this book will not help. If you want to learn more about what is more natural for a horse, such as how it is fed, how much foraging it is allowed to do, then there is some info. here.

Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus Review

Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for a book that preaches a comfortable, easy, complacent version of Christianity, then this isn't the book for you. This book will hit you between the eyes. Kyle Idleman pulls no punches. If you are open to it, this book is like a giant mirror. It will help you take an honest look at yourself and realize what is truly in your heart. Jesus was never interested in drawing a crowd. He was interesting in gaining followers. Not of religion or legalism, but followers of Him. Idleman goes to great lengths to help the reader understand what it means to truly follow Christ. We live in an age where the Gospel and cost of following Christ are often softened and watered down. I think there are many people in American churches who have chosen to "follow Christ" with little or no consideration of the cost. Following Christ is about much more than just a "Get Out of Hell Free" card. It involves sacrifice, dying to self, and surrendering everything to Him. He may not ask us to give up everything, but a true follower is willing to do so if He does ask.
I think we all know someone who is obsessed with a particular celebrity. For example, say someone is obsessed with Britney Spears. A true fan probably is a fan on Facebook, has every CD she has ever made, and possibly even a scrape book of every magazine article ever written about her. If something new comes out, they will go to great lengths to attain it. But Jesus has never been interesting in having a fan club. He wants all of us. If you read this book with an open heart and mind, and are willing to be honest with yourself, this book will help you know if you are really a follower of Christ or if you are merely a fan of His. It is one thing to CLAIM to be a follower, it is an altogether different thing to actually LIVE like a follower of Christ. Jesus is not interested in mere lip service.
I have to ademit, that I spent a lot of years as a fan of Jesus. I knew all the right lingo, all the rules (don't drink, don't swear, don't have sex before marriage) and I knew a lot of knowledge about Jesus and the Bible. But what I didn't realize is that Jesus is interested in the heart. It is entirely possible to look great on the outside and be rotten on the inside. After awhile, I started going through the motions of prayer, worshiping God, and reading in the Word, but my heart wasn't really in it. I cared more about looking good on the outside than the state of my heart. I claimed to love Jesus, but in reality, it was all about me. I realized I wasn't following the Jesus of Scripture, I was following a false version of my own creation. A version that didn't demand too much, expect too much out of me, or expect total, unconditional surrender. I honestly believed that I could have Christ and my own way. Looking back, I can see now how completely self-centered I was. Even when a close friend cared enough to point this out to me, I didn't listen. Instead, I got angry and defensive. I claimed that Jesus was Lord of my life, but when it came right down to it, I was Lord of my life. But no more. Now, I can honestly say "I am not a fan of Jesus."

Are you a follower of Jesus?Don't answer too quickly. In fact, you may want to read this book before you answer at all. Consider it a 'Define the Relationship' conversation to determine exactly where you stand. You may indeed be a passionate, fully devoted follower of Jesus. Or, you may be just a fan who admires Jesus but isn't ready to let him cramp your style. Then again, maybe you're not into Jesus, period. In any case, don't take the question---Are you a follower of Jesus?---lightly. Some people don't know what they've said yes to and other people don't realize what they've said no to, says Pastor Kyle Idleman. But Jesus is ready to clearly define the relationship he wants with his followers. Not a Fan calls you to consider the demands and rewards of being a true disciple. With frankness sprinkled with humor, Idleman invites you to live the way Jesus lived, love the way he loved, pray the way he prayed, and never give up living for the One who gave his all for you.

Getting Your First Horse (Horse-Wise Guides Series) Review

Getting Your First Horse (Horse-Wise Guides Series)

I am a horse owner and I found this book to be not only informative but enjoyable to read. With so many other books on the subject of owning horses they are so dry that they do not hold your interest long enough to impart their information. Ms Dutson not only informs you but makes reading about things you think you know fun. Sometimes along the way you realize you learned something new.
I think everyone who is thinking of buying a horse needs to read this book before they jump into the horse ownership boat. We all have known people that think that buying the horse is the most expensive part of owning a horse, whereas we know that it is not even close to the most expensive part of being a horse owner.
I applaud Ms Dutson for her thorough inspection of all aspects of buying your first horse. For someone who has already purchased my first horse I wish that someone had given me this book before hand so that I could have made a more informed choice. Thank you, Miss Dutson

Shut Out Review

Shut Out
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kody Keplinger blew me away with her debut novel The DUFF, so I went into Shut Out with the hopes that she could pull out something even half as good. Shut Out was definitely that, I would say that I loved it almost as much, and that is saying something. I was hooked from page one of Shut Out, and devoured it in one sitting.
Shut Out is a battle of the sexes, a love story, a tale of friendship, and more. I'm not sure how Kody Keplinger managed to put so much into one fun-filled story, but I'm so glad that she did. I can't count the number of times I found my self laughing out loud. I experienced the characters emotions (and trust me they were many, and wide ranging) but that is what made this story so enjoyable.
Each character was so relatable, whether you loved them or hated them. From Lissa, the well meaning, and slightly neurotic main character, to the sexy guys that she is battling, to the best friend who is who always seems to be right (even when Lissa doesn't want her to be), to the bitchy other friend that never has anything nice to say. They are all well written and so easy connect with.
I would recommend Shut Out to anyone who loves a good battle of the sexes, loves a good laugh, or just loves a good read, I don't think you will be disappointed. Shut Out brings all of that and so much more.

Most high school sports teams have rivalries with other schools. At Hamilton High, it's a civil war: the football team versus the soccer team. And for her part,Lissa is sick of it. Her quarterback boyfriend, Randy, is always ditching her to go pick a fight with the soccer team or to prank their locker room. And on three separate occasions Randy's car has been egged while he and Lissa were inside, making out. She is done competing with a bunch of sweaty boys for her own boyfriend's attention. Lissa decides to end the rivalry once and for all: She and the other players' girlfriends go on a hookup strike. The boys won't get any action from them until the football and soccer teams make peace. What they don't count on is a new sort of rivalry: an impossible girls-against-boys showdown that hinges on who will cave to their libidos first. And Lissa never sees her own sexual tension with the leader of the boys, Cash Sterling, coming.

Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry Novels) Review

Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry Novels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the record, I fully blame Simone Elkeles for my obsession with the young adult genre. Before I got my hands on a copy of Perfect Chemistry, I thought YA novels were strictly PG rated and the most passionate displays of affection was a line saying, "We made out last night." Nothing was ever discussed in detail, let alone the smoldering way Elkeles writes a love scene. As if that wasn't enough, she doesn't flinch when tackling tough subjects like gang violence and teen sexuality.
I fell in love with this series three years ago, and this final installment was just as hot and sultry as the previous two books. Luis, being the youngest, was so much fun. He didn't have the jaded cynicism his older brothers had going into this book. He was a reckless, fun guy who liked to make people laugh. This is what made the revelation about his past all the more saddening (sorry, that's all I'll say - read the book to find out what happens).
I wasn't all that crazy about Nikki. I understood she got hurt in a major way by a major creep, but I felt some times she took her mistrust in Luis too far. Towards the end I warmed up to her, but for a little while I thought she needed a good slap. I did, however, adore her friends Derek and Kendall. For some reason I looked forward to any scene they were in.
I felt parts of this book, especially the end, moved too fast. I would have liked a little more filling in the Latino Blood storyline and Luis's reactions to what he discovered. I felt that came and went too fast. Then again, it might just be me with a serious case of the Oliver Twists, making grabby hands and begging for some more because I knew this series was coming to a close.
It could be argued that Elkeles's books in this series are formulaic. After reading the first, the other two play out the same way, but I went in expecting that. There are no real surprised, but I recently saw on the news that people are almost 40% happier when they read a book or see a movie already knowing how it will end. This book is a classic example of that: I love knowing that in the Simone Elkeles's world love truly can conquer all.

Basic Training for Horses (Doubleday Equestrian Library) Review

Basic Training for Horses (Doubleday Equestrian Library)

I originally bought the companion book Basic Riding by these two knowledgeable horsewomen. Then someone recommended this book to me when I had to teach my horse how to work on a lunge-line. It is incredible how the authors are able to present their information to accommodate many levels of horsepeople - from beginner through advanced - for western/stock, dressage/hunter/jumper, driving, etc.
I recommend these books every opportunity I have for the teenage through adult horse person who wants to have a strong background in overall horse training and riding. During the last 3 years, since I have owned these books, I have gone back to them repeatedly. I only wish I had them 6 years ago when I returned to riding.

Building Your Dream Horse: Charles Wilhelm's Ultimate Foundation Training (Howell Equestrian Library)
Average Reviews:

I was really looking forward to reading this book. I love Charles Wilhelm, I love his shows and he has taught me a lot just by watching him. I love his manner, his way of putting things across... and the fact that his step-by-step exercises work.
However, as he would admit, he is not a writer. This book is written by the co-author, and it shows. There's nothing in the book that's 'wrong', it's just that it lacks passion - it's kind of uninspired. I get the feeling that they set out to write 'yet another horse training book' and included all the necessary sections, and all in all it reads like that.
It's also fairly thin on content. For example, if you watch CW ride, his horses have really good flexibility and shoulder control. This is what I'm working towards with my 3 yr old. I find the section in the book .... and there's at most a paragraph ... ! Just not enough to really work from. Not enough specific exercises to even get you started.
I'm not really sure who the book is aimed at. Not for a beginning trainer like me. For starting to train your horse, you're much better off with Clinton Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship. The training methods are pretty much the same, but CA's gives you a whole lot more value for money - much clearer instruction, much more specific exercises, far better illustrated (you can really see what you're trying to achieve and how from the CA photo's).
I'm sorry I didn't like the book more. I'm still a big fan of the man and the method.

Throughout my captivity, I was never told what was going to happen next or why. This lack of knowledge was used by Master to maintain a continuous element of fear and control over me. Anytime I was taken out of the box, I never knew what to expect. Fear of the unknown was always with me as I was kept in the dark both physically and mentally. This lack of knowledge may have been a good thing in one sense. If I had known the length of my entombment after returning from Riverside, I'm not sure I would have survived. Of course, I'm not sure even Master knew how long he was going to keep me in the box.A few days passed then a few more. Then weeks passed followed by months. Months slowly turned into years. I would spend the next three years of my life (1981-1984) in the box sleeping, dreaming, and praying.I have to assume my lengthy confinement in the box came about because Master was concerned he had given me too much freedom. Maybe he felt he was losing control of his slave. Too many neighbors had seen me, and questions about my status in the Hooker household were surely to arise. A fast thinking family member in Riverside may have copied down his vehicle tag number. What if the police knocked on his door on day looking for Colleen Stan? What if they searched the mobile home? Would anyone think to look under a waterbed for the girl in the box? Master wanted to keep me out of sight until the heat had passed. The other reason for putting me into storage was Ma'am. I'm sure she wanted me out of her life, out of her children's lives, and out of her husband's life. Master was not ready to let his slave go. Cloistering was the only answer. My daily routine soon became predictive as I was allowed out late in the evening after the girls had gone to bed. I emptied my bedpan, drank a large glass of water, and ate cold leftovers in the front bathroom. Sometimes the leftovers were true leftovers that had been out all day and the family didn't want.

Deadly Vision Review

Deadly Vision
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hot on the heels of his enjoyable gay serial killer novel - last year's "IM" - Rick Reed returns with another gripping thriller, "Deadly Vision." Reed is quickly developing his own unique formula that blends suspense, fast-moving narratives, fully-realized gay characters, and a touch of the occult. His seeming bid to become a gay hybrid of James Patterson and Dean Koontz will not be lost on readers with this latest offering.
Cass D'Angelo, single mother to seven-year-old Max, is toiling away as a waitress in a small, depressed river town in Ohio. When Cass goes off after Max when he wanders off one afternoon during a thunderstorm, she runs afoul of a lightning strike and a falling tree limb. She awakens days later in the hospital - relieved to find Max safe - and discovers that the resulting concussion has left her with a newfound psychic ability. Before you can say Psychic Friends Network, Cass receives disturbing images of several local girls gone missing - their grisly fates playing out behind her mind's eye. Fearing more deaths, the reluctant psychic reaches out to the police and to one of the missing girl's parents - all of whom are skeptical. But when the father of a second missing girl begs Cass' help in finding his daughter and her decomposing body is found along the Ohio River banks, Cass finds herself the center of unwanted attention from a pair of devil-worshipping killers desperate to find out how she found their carefully hidden grave. It's here that the story kicks into even higher gear with a kidnapping, a manhunt, and - to a lesser extent - hints of a budding romance with a sympathetic female journalist.
As in "IM," Reed again opts to tell his story through multiple points of view. And, again, it works surprisingly well even when minor characters like Cass' mother get their chance at the storytelling bat. Laying out the actions and motives of your villains for readers is a tricky proposition - give too much and risk predictability at the expense of the suspense. But Reed expertly walks the tightrope between disclosure and omission, crafting passages told from the killers' perspective that are appropriately chilling and give just enough away to readers so that their acquired insight translates into dread when the action switches back to Cass and company. It's foreboding at it s finest with readers left muttering, "If you only knew what I know" at the book itself.
Reed also imbues "Deadly Vision" with a strong sense of setting, creating in Summitville a bleak tableau of working class hardship. One gets a strong sense of inevitability for the fictional denizens of the town, like they surrendered master status of their own destinies somewhere between unplanned pregnancies and factory closings. He nails the idea of familiarity and disconnection as analogous functions of small-town life:
"When Sheryl McKenna's mother opened the door, Cass felt as though she had already seen her. And maybe she had. Summitville was, after all, a small town. She could have passed the tired-looking woman on the street downtown, or served her in the diner. The woman stared at her with bright gray eyes, looking her over as if Cass were something she had discarded in the yard that had managed to make its way back to the porch. Mrs. McKenna was small, with no fat on her bones; she looked almost skeletal. Her skin was weathered, the result of too much sun, too much smoke. Her skin, combined with straw-like bleached blonde hair and hard eyes made her, Cass was sure, look older than her years. She held a cigarette in her hand, and the smell of tobacco smoke came out of the house in a wave when she opened the door."
Unlike "IM," the lesbian romance is relegated to the background here, never even a glimmer of possibility until the third act - and even then it's only alluded to in a near future. This is the novel's only misstep - and a slight one at that - and an area where Reed missed an opportunity for deeper emotional investment in the reporter character of Dani Westwood. The lack of romantic connection to Cass keeps her at arm's length for much of the action, consigning her to stock character status.
The novel's supernatural elements are handled quite well, with Cass' understanding of her precognitive abilities evolving gradually over the course of the book and never coming off as forced or over-the-top. Only toward the end when Cass encounters the spectral vision of one of the victims does one get the sense that they're smack dab in the middle of an episode of "Cold Case" or "The Ghost Whisperer" - and that's either criticism or commendation depending upon your level of tolerance for either of those shows.
The literary equivalent of a hybrid vehicle, "Deadly Vision" powers forward on a combustion of supernatural suspense, murder mystery, and breakneck thriller. With psychics and serial killers rendered with the same deft hand in a propulsive narrative likely to increase respirations, it takes no psychic ability to see that Rick Reed is headed for the top of the suspense class.

D.B.: A Novel Review

D.B.: A Novel
Average Reviews:

What a great idea! A novel that takes on the legend of D.B. Cooper. What if he did survive? Where did he go and what did he do? That's half of this interesting book by Elwood Reid and by far the best half of the book. He has created a great historical fiction character that was worth the price of this book.
Unfortunately, the story of D.B. in this book gets intertwined with the life of a newly retired FBI officer who was actually on the Cooper case when it happened. Years later, immediately after retiring he is pulled back into the case by another FBI officer who harbors a long-held interest in the case. I won't reveal how D.B. and the FBI come together in this book, but I'm afraid it detracts from the story.
Every once in awhile you come across a book that is written exceptionally well but has plot problems. This is one of those books where the main character comes alive, the descriptions and flow of the account is great but in the end, it just comes off as too improbable. Moreover, the other characters in the book just aren't as interesting as D.B. himself.
Still, I liked the book enough to recommend it and will give the author another try in the future.
