It's to be a weeklong celebration of Alison Hart, Esteemed Reader. Today we're celebrating the release of her newest book, Whirlwind, available for the first time to non ninjas this week (we ninjas are able to get our books early). I've already read and loved it and I think you will also. It's worth noting that Whirlwind is actually the sequel to Shadow Horse. You don't need to have read that book to enjoy Whirlwind, but reading Whirlwind first will spoil Shadow Horse for you. My advice? Read both and buy copies as Christmas gifts this year (as I know Alison Hart reads this blog, I'm sure she'll appreciate it).Later this week, we'll cap our celebration by having none other than Alison Hart here at this very blog to answer the same 7 Questions asked of every writer kind enough to join us. And check back next week when we'll be celebrating Dr. Melissa Walker and her brand new book, A Place For Delta. And the very next week we'll have Kathleen Van Cleve and her book Drizzle, and after that, Bonnie Doerr and her book Island Sting. Oh what a glorious time it is to be a ninja! I hope you're as excited as I am, Esteemed Reader.
And now let's talk Whirlwind. To be fair, Whirlwind is actually a book for teens, or a young adult novel, or possibly even a tween novel. Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago we discussed Emma's River, a middle grade novel by Alison Hart. If you don't remember that, here's the link.I'm trying to leave YA books to the Young Adult Ninjas out there, but I thought reading both types of books by the same author might provide a nice discussion for the differences between the two genres (as though I needed an excuse to read a new Alison Hart book).
Unfortunately, trying to pin down exact definitions of middle grade or young adult books is like trying to pin down the exact definition of a literary novel. Everybody knows what you mean, but no one has a definition that is exactly like anyone else's. I've read varying estimates, but generally a MG novel is 25-60,000 words and a YA novel is 50-90,000 words, and a J.K. Rowling novel is as long as she says it is. MG novels star characters that are 10-14 years old and YA novels star characters that are 13 to 19 years old. MG novels typically watch their language, have no sexual content, and usually steer clear of drugs and alcohol. YA novels can follow similar guidelines, or they can throw them out and write as filthy a book as they like (lucky!). For such a book, check out Courtney Summer's brilliant Cracked Up To Be.
Now then, even as I write these very loose definitions, I am sure someone will be planning to correct me in the comments section (please do). Better book fans than I have tried to set definitions and failed, so let's just talk about the books at hand.
The protagonist of the 263 page Whirlwind is thirteen year-old Jas Shuler (which makes this an early YA, perhaps even tween). The protagonist of the 142 page Emma's River was ten year-old Emma Wright. Both girls love animals, horses in particular. Emma was outraged that her horse, Twist, was being mistreated by deck hands on the steam boat. Cruel social circumstance separated Emma from Twist and she spent the novel fighting to reunite with her horse. Jas is outraged that her horse, Whirlwind, is being mistreated by cruel race horse insurance scammers. Jas spends the novel fighting to reunite with her horse. I don't mean to suggest that the books are the same, only that there are clear similarities.
And why wouldn't there be? The same fantastic writer is responsible for both.
The thing to notice is the difference in details. For example, both books feature romantic subplots, but Emma and the handsome boy who challenges her as he helps her with her horse are really nothing more than friends. Jas and the handsome boy who challenges her as he helps her with her horse is always looking deep into her eyes and puckering up his lips. Do they kiss? I would never spoil that for you, Esteemed Reader. You'll have to read the book to find out.
But still, it's worth noting that ten is too young for snogging in books and thirteen is perhaps acceptable for snogging. Not that Alison Hart has much interest in devoting much of the book to romance, as evident in this editorial aside from Whirlwind: "Jas flipped the page in her novel. It was about a girl's infatuation with a vampire, only the girl acted so stupid and in luv, Jas couldn't concentrate on the story." Hmmm, I wonder what book Jas was reading.
A more subtle difference between the books is in the type and severity of danger the two protagonists get in while on a mission to save their horses. Emma is chased around by deck hands and rude adults who do not understand how important her horse is. Cruel adults threaten to murder Jas's horse. Emma has to contend with a steam boat disaster and is nearly run through by a railroad spike. Jas is stalked and threatened by an adult male who might just murder her. Middle Grade readers would not tolerate this beast terrorizing a ten year old. They would turn on the writer. However, make that girl thirteen or older, and it's perhaps a fairer fight that will excite readers and keep them turning pages.
Another thing to notice is that the greater length of Whirlwind allows for expanded secondary characters. There are plenty of secondary characters in Emma's River, but they are kept brief and the main focus is their interactions with Emma. In Whirlwind, there are more secondary characters and they are able to have their own more developed subplots that are related to Jas's situation, but are not strictly about Jas. They have romances and work problems and things they're working through. They don't get their own separate chapters, but they are allowed to take some of the spotlight from Jas.
There are other differences, but I don't want to finish this review without saying that Whirlwind is a great book and worth your $7.99. Alison Hart wrote a few Nancy Drew novels and it shows. The mystery at the center of Whirlwind is a corker and it will keep you guessing until the very end. More, you'll care about Jas and Whirlwind and before you notice it, you'll have read the last page. You'll be sorry it's over, but relieved that Hart has left things open enough for a third go-round.
The last thing I want to say is to again express my admiration for Hart's keen ability to weave factual information into her fictional narrative, thereby establish authorial authority. The worlds Hart creates are authentic and suspension of disbelief is made possible by her complete knowledge of those worlds. Here are two perfectly written details slipped seamlessly in the text to achieve that effect:
"The hay supplier just called. He's out of Hay. I've been calling around, but because of the drought, hay's in demand. Everyone wants too much money. And folks keep calling about horses they want us to take, because they have no grass and can't afford to feed them."
"Scam artists like Hugh Robicheaux are careful and clever. We just recently shut down a scheme where racehorses were being sold for inflated prices. An agent and appraiser would place a high value on a horse, even though the actual money changing hands between the previous owner and the new owner was way lower. Based on the appraiser's value, the new owner could insure the horse for the inflated price. If the horse injured itself on the track or proved not to be a winner, it was killed."

Here is the much-begged-for sequel to Shadow Horse. With a feisty female protagonist, a little romance, a lot of mystery, and a barnful of animals just waiting to be loved, this young adult horse mystery novel will have young girls galloping to the bookstore to grab their copy. When thirteen-year-old Jas Schuler found her beloved mare Whirlwind dead in her padlock, she thought her heart would break. But now Jas knows the truth: Whirlwind is alive! Wealthy horse breeder Hugh Robicheaux faked the mare's death, collected insurance money, then sold her to an unsuspecting buyer. And he's going to get away with his crime, too—unless someone can find Whirlwind. And that's exactly what Jas plans to do.But hunting for Whirlwind is dangerous. Hugh has threatened to destroy everything Jas holds dear unless she stops her search. As she struggles with her desire to find Whirlwind without endangering the people she loves, Jas must ask herself: Should she risk so much for a horse she may never find? This heartfelt YA novel by a highly regarded equestrian author will have young readers chomping at the bit for more.

Maddie Inherits a Cowboy (Harlequin Super Romance) Review

Maddie Inherits a Cowboy (Harlequin Super Romance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If Nevada rancher Ty Hopewell and New York anthropology professor Madeline Blaine were Facebook Friends, their relationship would undoubtedly be characterized as "It's Complicated."
Ty blames himself for the accidental death of his ranching partner Skip Blaine who is also Madeline's brother. Madeline believes Ty is either bleeding her inherited share of the ranch's profits or he is incompetent. To learn the truth, she travels to the isolated Nevada ranch where she encounters more than she bargained for. Even the near-arctic cold and the blizzards of Nevada's Cowboy Country in the winter can't tamp down the burgeoning flame between them.

Complicating it all, Madeline is embroiled in an investigation into the falsification of academic test data. How will she handle the investigation while attempting to determine how the ranch began to lose money shortly after her brother's death? We know the pieces of the puzzle will eventually fall into place. The question is: How?
Jeannie Watt's touching story of accidental death, guilt, suspicion, conspiracy at the highest levels of academia, and romance, mixed with ample portions of everyday ranch life off the grid (electricity by intermittent and unreliable generators) is a compelling story you wont want to miss.
Check out how Jeannie converts a relationship from "It's complicated" to a deep and abiding love story between two wounded individuals.

No heat. No bed. And a cow…hanging from the rafters? What kind of ranch is this? No wonder Madeline's brother only sent pictures of the stunning Nevada landscape. He couldn't very well have convinced his family he was happy in this godforsaken place. But the cold outside is more bearable than the frosty partner she's inherited along with half of the ranch. Ty Hopewell. Not exactly Mr. Social.Never mind. She has every right to be here. She may be a city girl, but Madeline Blaine has a PhD and she's not afraid to use it. Something about this place-and this cowboy-just doesn't feel right. And she's going to figure out what it is. And fix it. Fix him, too…if she can.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Hounded to Death: A Novel Review

Hounded to Death: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rita Mae Brown delivers a winner in this installment of her Sister Jane "Outfoxed Series". Where her last title seemed rushed to production and the plotline was not well-developed, "Hounded to Death" is a welcome return to a great read for Rita Mae fans.
The story begins in late Spring in Kentucky at the Mid-America Hound Show where evil quickly raises its ugly head and starts the novel on its "whodunit" path while simultaneously explaining hound shows and searching for a stolen hound. Then, a suicide of a friend occurs, but Sister is not willing to believe that it was a suicide. Hmmm. Intermingled are interesting discussions of Kentucky bourbon, human nature, descriptions of opening new hunt territory, carrion eating habits, graduation from Custis Hall by "the girls", moonshining, and animal cruelty allegations.
As usual with this series, Rita Mae gives great accounts that educate us on foxhunting and animals without the feeling that we are being educated. And yes, the animals have some great conversations--a Rita Mae device to give us more clues and education.
While the book moves through the summer, there are no accounts of actual hunts so the reader must wait until hunting season just as foxhunters must wait. As with real foxhunting, the wait is worthwhile, as several wonderful accounts finally take place. As often happens in this series, a body is discovered during a hunt, and similarly, the unmasking of the killer is discovered, and he is accounted for at the end of a hunt.
Several old friends from previous books play important parts, including Tootie, Shaker and Gray. New characters include the despicable Mo Schneider; a horse vet--Hope Rogers; retired Judge Barry Baker; pet food maker, Grant Fuller; and new landowners, Dr. and Mrs. Mitch Fisher.
The writing is entertaining and sometimes thought provoking. It is also quite poetic and descriptive as evidenced by the following passage:
"Red!" Dreamboat called out.
As this hound was only in his second year, Cora checked it.
Asa came over, put his nose down, then lifted his head along with Cora and the curtain was raised.
This is a fun read, and we are there with them. I'll recommend this one to all my friends.

For anyone that works with or has horses, I highly reccomend this Book!!

Mrs. Pollifax Pursued (Mrs. Pollifax Mysteries) Review

Mrs. Pollifax Pursued (Mrs. Pollifax Mysteries)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had read a Mrs. Pollifax novel before and not enjoyed it at all. This is the first time i've tried one after reading two other Gilman novels, and i expected to like it. I do. It is a funny thing, however, that i do not enjoy it as much as her other, non-series novels. Somehow it is a little forced, a bit as thought she feels she really needs to write this to satisfy the readers who love Mrs. Pollifax. It is far less believable a story than "Thale's Folly" was, for instance, though the characters are, perhaps, less exotic than "Thale's". There is something about the set-up, some fashion in which Gilman is saying, "I know none of this is at all true to life, but here you are ~ you wanted it ~ hope you like it." Several of the characters ~ Kadi, Willie, Boozy Tim, Mrs. Pollifax herself ~ are nice, believable, real even; it must be the situation they find themselves in which displeases me. The plot relies on coincidence too much for its resolution, and does not carry the ring of truth a perect novel makes echo in my mind. Looking back onto it, i feel that all it is is some real charactes interacting on a cardboard plot; i was never drawnn in the way i want to be by any book i read. Nevertheless, a fun read; i will try another Mrs. Pollifax, to be sure ~ along with any non-Pollifax Gilmans i can find.

Working in the Shadows: A Year of Doing the Jobs (Most) Americans Won't Do

First off full disclosure: I am a Mexican born 1986 Amnesty U.S. citizen.
Growing up in Los Angeles and the interest that was put on our education I could have easily fallen into one of these jobs. From the time I was 15 (I lied about my age) and went to work for a temp agency along side other Mexicans that were here illegal or legal and uneducated. They would send us to the worst jobs, for instance a dog food company that had all the same characteristics of the chicken plant the author described. The one difference was I threw up after each shift because the smell was so nauseating. It was actually this job that made me choose education over sweat.
Happy Chicken (this made me laugh) I applaud you for putting your money where your mouth is. Instead of just saying "Illegals" like the majority of America, you brought light that it is not just illegals that are being taken advantage of. It's every person citizen or non citizen that walks through the doors of these companies that care only about their shareholders. Please don't assume that I am anti Capitalism because I love profit as much as the next guy but not at the expense of workers, especially docking them for having to take their kids to the doctor or no sick days.
Read the book get a first hand insight to what really happens at these kinds of jobs.

She Walks These Hills Review

She Walks These Hills
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
She Walks These Hills is another excellent book in the Appalachian series by Sharyn McCrumb. She again combines two stories - one in the present and one in the past along with a pinch of a ghost story, culminating in an overall satisfying novel.
This installment tells of the stories of Harm Sorley, an escaped murderer in the Appalachian area, a college professor following the trail of Katie Wyler, a pioneer woman trying to get to her home in 1799, and Hank the Yank, a bodacious radio personality who tries to get into both these stories. I will not give the ending away as some reviewers did, but you need to read this book to get the full flavor of the area and the era.
How do these three characters intertwine with each other - both from the past and present? It is up the reader to find out in this thrilling novel.

I have known Gincy Bucklin via cyberspace for quite a few years. We were fellow subscribers to the Horseman list until it fell into disuse, and when Gincy started her own list (Riding With Confidence) I subscribed immediately.
Gincy is one of the best and most knowledgeable teachers of riding that I know, and she not only has years of experience behind her, but also specializes in helping timid, fearful and/or aging riders who have for some reason lost their confidence. She is uncanny at figuring out physical, mental and emotional problems and resolving rider error and is highly sympathetic to those who are having problems with riding or their horses, so it really came as no surprise that she would write a book to bridge the gap between horse and rider.
This teacher turned writer has greater works yet to come, and this book is the first of such. It is in encyclopedic form, and easy to read and comprehend.
Bravo, Gincy.

Comeback: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels) Review

Comeback: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels)

Professional thief Parker returns in this suspenseful tale of a caper gone wrong. Parker, with fellow thieves Liss and Mackey, conspires to rob the coffers of the Christian Crusade, part of the ministry of the Reverend William Archibald. Despite some last minute nerves on the part of their inside man, the robbery proceeds smoothly, and the trio makes off with nearly half a million dollars in cash.
After the crooks go to ground, one of their number tries to rob the rest. An ever wary Parker foils this attempt but fails to subdue his former ally. Parker and the remaining gang member must evade the traitor, the police, and Reverend Archibald's minions to escape with their lives and the money.
Comeback, Richard Stark's (aka Donald E. Westlake's) first Parker novel after an almost unendurable twenty three year hiatus, is a hard boiled novel of suspense comparable to the other highly entertaining entries in this series. Told using Stark's trademark framework--three quarters of the novel is from Parker's point of view, one quarter from the individual points of view of all the other principal characters--the novel delivers all the action, violence and surprises fans of this series have come to expect. Stark and Parker--perfect together!

I really enjoyed reading Frater's trilogy, and when the "Untold" came out I grabbed it up right away. Frater is a great story teller and I could have given the "Untold" 5 Stars, but her new book seems to have fallen into some of the same problems that other Zombie novels have; typos that distract from the story and make you focus on the writing rather than the characters or story.
Examples include:
"he rushed down the stars as she dragged her suitcase down the stairs."
"He could spell the sharp tang of blood,"
"In the review mirror,"
I don't know how this happens, whether Frater is too rushed to get the book done or if it is bad editing and proofing by another individual, but the integrity of the writing is harmed by these types of problems and I know some people will just stop reading when they come across not one, but multiple typos in a book.
I'll buy Frater's next books, but if I start coming into contact with too many typos, I'll be just as irritated as I was toward the end of "Untold" and may have to rethink buying in the future.

CRUDDY: An Illustrated Novel Review

CRUDDY: An Illustrated Novel
Average Reviews:

I had never heard of Lynda Barry before getting a tip about this book from another Amazon reader. For some reason I was expecting something along the lines of Phoebe Gloeckner's "Diary of a Teenage Girl"...graphic novel about girl coming of age in the 70's, etc.
But this is no memoir--at least, I hope not! It isn't really even a graphic novel in the traditional sense; Barry's crude paintings (done with charcoal? paint? hard to tell) interspersed throughout the narrative evoke the dark and ugly mood of the book perfectly, but they're miles away from comic-book realism.
This is a wildly-imaginative, horrifying book about Roberta Rohbeson, the story itself made even more surreal by the copious amounts of drugs and alcohol she as the narrator consumes, both as an 11 and 16 year old.
Roberta is tormented and abused at the hands of her nomadic father, who takes her on a roadtrip littered with corpses and who calls her Clyde and introduces her as a mute mongoloid. This is a girl who considers herself so ugly as a result of his violence, she becomes uncomfortable when people even glance her way. She's pitiable in the most obvious sense, but she's also smart and tough--and carries a knife named "Little Debbie" to protect her from the evil she (rightly) expects to encounter at every turn.
There's shenanigans and drug-and-alcohol induced exploits, of course, which drew comparisons to "Fear and Loathing" on the jacket cover, if I remember correctly. But it's not a one-trick pony, as Barry's character development skills are stunning. There's Roberta herself, her dim-witted and hysterical sidekick Vicky Talluso, the Father (referred to only as such), an erstwhile druggie hookup named Turtle, the flabby abusive hillbilly bartender Pammy, and many more. I can't make this stuff up, but Lynda Barry can.
Read it!!! Read it in the dark before you fall asleep. Read it when you're feeling sad. Read it in the most incongruous of settings--in the park, at the beach, on a sunny day. Despite its ugliness, it will make you smile.

May God Have Mercy: A True Story of Crime and Punishment Review

May God Have Mercy: A True Story of Crime and Punishment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yes, this book is excellent journalism, well written, and a haunting look at life on Death Row and the "death industry" of lawyers, appeals, prisons, and so on. However, I do have one serious problem with Tucker's narrative: Why, at no point, was he even willing to consider the possibility that Coleman might have been guilty? While the evidence didn't damn Coleman, it certainly didn't exclude him either. By Tucker's own account, Coleman refused to take a blood test that could have exonerated him for quite awhile (he apparently feared that authorities would "frame" him); once performed, the test could not rule Coleman out; and he did not take a lie-detector test until the day of his execution, which he failed. Tucker also shrugs off Coleman's earlier conviction on a sex crime as a case of mistaken identity. but offers no real proof.
In his attempt to portray Coleman innocent, Tucker missed the opportunity to create a truly balanced portrait of crime and punishment in America. Much better is "Dead Run," the story of Dennis Stockton and the mass Death Row escape.

O'Brien's quest for meaning in life, as defined by his relationship with the land and the animals that call it home, continues here. In his previous novel, Equinox, he explored the dichotomy in his life between the pull of the wild, and the demands of a stable relationship that required more than he was able to give. In Buffalo for the Broken Heart, we find him feeling lost and ruddlerless, both in his personal and financial life, as he struggles to get past a failed marriage and looming financial disaster.
As O'Brien gradually comes to the conclusion that buffalo are the logical answer to his dilemma, it becomes clear that they are stand for a balance and wholeness he has been trying to restore to his land and his inner landscape as well. The story, as it unfolds, is full of the personal details of Great Plains life, and the honest self-exploration that make O'Brien's books a pleasure to read. As so often happens, his inner doubts and fears are reflected in the events and lives around him. The weather is unpredictable, farm costs rise, friends go bankrupt, he is beset by worries over the buffalos he has purchased, the list goes on and on until by the end of the novel, O'Brien comes to tenuous terms with his land and his new means of making a living. The buffalo are not the final answer, but it is clear that they have helped him find another piece of the puzzle he is working so hard to solve.
